Speaking from Among the Bones
Speaking from Among the Bones | Alan Bradley
An ancient tomb, a pool of fresh blood - a baffling case for young detective Flavia de Luce. The first thing I saw was a hand, and then the face, a ghastly inhuman mask...'I do believe we've found Mr Collicutt,' I said. When the tomb of St Tancred is opened, no one expects to find the body of the organist, lying in a pool of blood, his handsome features covered by a gas mask. Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce is intrigued. Why would anyone want to kill the much-admired organist in such a brutal and bizarre fashion? Why place his body in the tomb? And what happened to the remains of the previous occupant? The mystery leads Flavia deep into the past, to a strange story of lost manuscripts and ancient relics...

Fifth book in the series and Flavia never disappoints! She still makes me laugh. (She could so easily veer into being a twee or annoying character but is not!) As usual, Bishop's Lacey offers up a solid mystery to solve involving an entertaining cast of eccentrics. Could feel pieces of future storylines being put in place, which was supported by the final surprise at the end. 🤨 My #cloakanddaggerchristmas pick for child detective. @Ruthiella

Ruthiella I definitely enjoyed all the Flavia books because I liked her as a character. 11mo

The 5th Flavia de Luce crime book and I‘m so glad I‘ve started reading this series again.

This time Flavia is present when a body is found in a crypt in the church. And of course Flavia needs to investigate.

I love Flavia as a character, but I‘m not sure I would love having her as little sister.

Ruthiella I agree! I love fictional Flavia, but wouldn‘t want to encounter her in real life. 😂 2y

I stayed up late finishing this one, only to find the last line is a cliffhanger. So, that's the story of how I ordered book #6 at 1am. This continues to be a fun series and this one felt a little different. The police presence was missing for most of Flavia's investigation, so she had different obstacles. Made it feel fresh, rather than having her fight the same fights in every book.

I‘m back! Work finally slowed down a bit. I needed a comforting book and so I turned to this series again. Just something fun and interesting and not too sad even with all the murder. I like the new characters that were introduced. And overall it was a fun mystery.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Flavia de Luce never fails to entertain. The “big twist” in this one was something I‘ve predicted from the very first book, but I still enjoyed it. The characters are fun, the plot was engaging, and I learned a few more fun facts (as one always does with Flavia, chemist extraordinaire), including how to make the perfect hard-boiled egg. Overall, this was an enjoyable, quick read that I‘d recommend, especially for the tween/YA crowds.

Bradley really shines in the fifth instalment of the Flavia de Luce series. With a unique way of resolving the central mystery and introducing a new personal challenge in Flavia‘s life on the last page, this moves Flavia‘s story forward but we still have our dear, precocious child detective.

Question 4!

#flaviabuddyread

BridgetteM Talk about a major cliffhanger! I have no idea how this is going to play out. I cannot wait to read the next book and find out! 4y
Smarkies I hope that this gives the deLuce family something happy to look forward to. But if it doesn't pan out I will be sorely disappointed for them. 😞 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies @BridgetteM I forgot this was the book that Harriet was found... I love how this moves Flavia‘s personal story forward and the growth we‘ll get to see Flavia experience as she deals with this significant revelation. So looking forward to your reactions of how this develops in Book 6. 4y

Smarkies I thought miss tanty was being a bit of a weirdo and perhaps wanting to emulate Flavia and be a little more popular in the village. 4y

Question 2!

#flaviabuddyread

BridgetteM Even though I just finished the book yesterday, I forgot what the solution to this was... 4y
Smarkies @BridgetteM I think it was bat's urine or some chemical compound that Flavia analysed. 4y
Smarkies I had no clue what to make of this. There have been stories about religious paintings bleeding before. But this seemed like too big a thing to happen in that sleepy village. 4y
See All 7 Comments
BridgetteM @Smarkies Thanks! That jogged my memory. It didn‘t make much of an impression on me because I had it tagged as a red herring from the first. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies @BridgetteM I still have no idea what this whole thing was. I went back and looked again, I tried googling to see if it was explained somewhere... I haven‘t figured out what the point of it was yet, either. 4y
Smarkies @janeycanuck I think it was just something the author threw in as a distraction - To perhaps make it seem a bit supernatural 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies Probably. I expected another body to be found so it certainly worked if that was the goal! 4y

BridgetteM It made me feel a little sympathy for the vicar‘s wife. I still don‘t like her, though. I love the vicar, however! 4y
Smarkies I felt some sympathy for the vicar's wife. Maybe this is what made her who she is and why the vicar still really loves her. 4y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM @Smarkies I can remember not liking Cynthia the first time I read the books but by the end, I liked her. I can‘t remember if this was the turning point or not but it definitely is a shift in what we know about her. I felt so sad for them both when this unfolded. 4y

An appropriate book to finish on Halloween. I love the Flavia de Luce mysteries, as this one has some interesting twists and turns. Plus, it ends with a tremendous cliffhanger. I'm a Flavia fan, woefully behind in the series (this is the 5th of 10 books published so far). I had non-spoiler advance warning from a Goodreads reviewer that there was quite the cliffhanger. Was there ever! I might have to read the next installment sooner than I would normally!

As always, Alan Bradley comes through with this Flavia de Luce novel. Flavia, whose precocious, hyper-intelligent voice is the shining star of the novel, becomes involved in a mystery that places her chemistry knowledge at its center. I listened to this one on @scribd, and the reader is *excellent*. And what a cliffhanger!!!

Another delightful installment in the adventures of Flavia de Luce 💜💜💜 This one is my fave so far; I think the mystery is very well done & love how the individual mystery was solved but we were given a series cliffhanger! Flavia is at it again in this installment of her mystery series. This time, a suspicious, contemporary body is found in the tomb of Saint Tancred, and Flavia has to figure out why. Another fun adventure, with a twist at the end. Janet Entwistle once again does a marvelous job with the narration.

I know it‘s only Thursday but this is what I‘d like my weekend to be like: surrounded by books and looking foxy 🦊.

Instead, there will be 2 children‘s birthday parties, a “Messy Easter” children‘s event at our church, and 11 people coming over for lunch on Sunday. 😵

Maybe I should just aim for that “looking foxy surrounded by books” thing today.

Kaye That‘s pretty much my everyday look. FOXY. 👄 💄 👁. JOKING 😁. When I say I‘m looking foxy, I probably look more like the animal than a beauty queen. I can still sit in a pile of books though. (edited) 7y
Libby1 Awesome, @Kaye 🧡. 7y
Kaye Can I ask what a messy easter party is ? Color the eggs before they boil them, then go out and egg the side of a building ? 7y
See All 14 Comments
Libby1 @Kaye - Messy Easter is a whole afternoon of crafts, singing, playing, and eating (loads) while learning about the Easter story. Last year we had a talk, music, loads of stations to do creative stuff, and even a safe (animal friendly!) petting zoo with farm animals. My favourites were the little lambs, but we could see bunnies, chicks, and goats as well. It‘s a great way of having fun with the family and thinking about the hope of Easter. ❤️ 7y
Libby1 @Kaye - and foxy is a severe stretch for me these days! I have Bookworm‘s Physique! 🤣 But I think foxy is more about ATTITUDE, so I‘m going to embrace that. 🦊 7y
