Ithaca
Ithaca: The exquisite, gripping tale that breathes life into ancient myth | Claire North
21 posts | 16 read | 27 to read
'Claire North brings a powerful, fresh and unflinching voice to ancient myth - darkly fascinating, raw and breathtaking' Jennifer Saint, author of Sunday Times bestseller Ariadne This is the story of Penelope of Ithaca, famed wife of Odysseus, as it has never been told before. Beyond Ithaca's shores, the whims of gods dictate the wars of men. But on the isle, it is the choices of the abandoned women - and their goddesses - that will change the course of the world. 'The greatest power we women can own is that which we take in secret.' Seventeen years ago, King Odysseus sailed to war with Troy, taking with him every man of fighting age from the isle of Ithaca. None of them has returned, and the women of Ithaca have been left behind to run the kingdom. Penelope was barely into womanhood when she wed Odysseus. While he lived, her position was secure. But now, years on, speculation is mounting that her husband is dead, and suitors are beginning to knock at her door. No one man is strong enough to claim Odysseus's empty throne - not yet. But as everyone waits for the balance of power to tip, Penelope knows that any choice she makes could plunge Ithaca into bloody civil war . . . From the multi award-winning Claire North comes a daring, exquisite and moving tale that breathes life into ancient myth, and tells of the women who stand defiant in a world ruled by ruthless men. It's time for the women of Ithaca to tell their tale . . . 'Everything I've wanted in a retelling: a vibrant cast, full of suspense, told with a phenomenal narrative voice - this is an absolute masterpiece' Sarah Bonner, author of Her Perfect Twin 'Told in the arresting voice of the goddess Hera . . . Ithaca conjures up a world in which women, abandoned by their men, must weave their own destinies' The Times 'Richly poetic . . . This is an impassioned plea for the lost, disenfranchised queens of ancient Greece, a love letter to the silenced women of history' Booklist 'Claire North has set a new standard for Ancient Greek retellings. Absolutely sublime' Hannah Lynn, author of Athena's Child The Songs of Penelope novels: Ithaca House of Odysseus

Loved this version about Queen Penelope of Ithaca, wife of Odysseus, where the island is really run by women.

I have an interest in mythology and own the 4 books here, someday I‘ll read all of those.

I enjoyed this Greek mythology story, this time about Penelope and the island of Ithaca. She is still waiting and hoping Odyssesus is alive and will come back. It started off slow and was even contemplating to DNF it. But decided to stick at it.

dabbe How did I miss this one? #stacked

My 2nd favorite poem of all time (Wordsworth's Daffodils is 1st):

PENELOPE
In the pathway of the sun,
In the footsteps of the breeze,
Where the world and sky are one,
He shall ride the silver seas,
He shall cut the glittering wave.
I shall sit at home, and rock;
Rise, to heed a neighbor's knock;
Brew my tea, and snip my thread;
Bleach the linen for my bed.
They will call him brave.

Another myth retelling that made me a little sad; it talks about a woman‘s place in the ancient world as Penelope deals with her suitors. I was just disappointed because the most interesting part - Penelope creating a female army - wasn‘t mentioned as much as I‘d like. We also don‘t see the “end” - when Odysseus comes home, and we don‘t know what happens to the one kind and helpful suitor (created just for this book).

I don't usually read mythology retellings, and it didn't become my favorite genre either, but it wasn't bad. It's about badass women. 💪🏻

I‘ll call this a Pick because I liked it well enough, but it felt a bit long and it didn‘t contain author‘s notes about why this particular myth was being retold and what sources, if any, were drawn upon. (Natalie Haynes writes good author‘s notes in this regard.) Content warning for rape / sexual assault.

I loved this imagining of the period just before the beginning of the “Odyssey”. Claire North tells the story of Penelope protecting her kingdom from the suitors and myriad other calamities. Honestly, in North‘s telling, Penelope is the more wily and clever one of the couple. This is my favorite Clair North book since “The First 15 Lives of Harry August” :)

This was my first #Aardvark selection and it was excellent. This is about Penelope and how she deals with those pesky suitors while Odysseus was MIA. And my favorite part is that Hera is the narrator. It's funny and clever. I love Greek stories. There is a lot to work with there. The author did an excellent job with it.

It can be super challenging to keep track of the characters in Greek Mythology Retellings 🤯 Thankfully Claire North has included a list of all characters (mortal and immortal) at the very beginning. If ever there was a page to dogear 😉

Aims42 I agree! I love when there‘s a list of characters or a family tree, it‘s so helpful!! 👍 2y

I went into this wanting to love it. Sadly, I can‘t stand Hera as a narrator—she comes across as vindictive and petty—and the writing just seemed… juvenile. Not for me, sadly.

Thanks to Terra dog for holding up the book for me!

Well, this is delightful. This is the third novel I‘ve read by this author. I love a retelling of mythology. This is about Penelope when Odysseus has failed to return to Ithaca, told through the eyes of the Goddess Hera.

I am really happy with the company's transparency about first month hiccups and shipping delays. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email apologizing for a late shipment and the offer of a free additional book of my choice to say sorry!
I can't wait to see November picks!

Ithaca is a retelling of Penelope's story, which I loved in theory. To be fair, there is so much in this book that I loved, but the shifts in tone due to Hera being the narrator of the tale felt out of place and became annoying.

I'm still glad that I read it, but it's not a Greek retelling I'll revisit.

Karisa Reminds me of one of my favorite poems: 2y
Karisa Penelope
by Dorothy Parker

In the pathway of the sun,
In the footsteps of the breeze,
Where the world and sky are one,
He shall ride the silver seas,
He shall cut the glittering wave.
I shall sit at home, and rock;
Rise, to heed a neighbor's knock;
Brew my tea, and snip my thread;
Bleach the linen for my bed.
They will call him brave.

Karisa (I love the rhyme schemes with his like waves and her part like a heartbeat. And that last line… Penelope is awesome. Too bad the book doesn‘t quite live up to her.) 2y

Another #Aardvark hint - feels like this one is possibly Ithaca!

While this book (if it is indeed the book this hint refers to) is not my personal cup of tea, is anybody else low-key stoked for Aardvark to launch??

LMJenkins I just heard about this for the first time yesterday and yes I am very intrigued. 2y
DisneyFan Isn‘t it just a copy of BOTM? I feel like it‘s not offering anything different but let‘s see I guess. I‘d love to see more non-fiction, ebook options, and a bookmark with each book, lol. 2y
swishandflick @DisneyFan it's definitely a similar model as BOTM, but in my opinion BOTM has started to fall into the trap of "subpar thrillers" being their schtick. So if Aardvark is offering books I'm more drawn to, that's the bonus for me! Also they immediately offered access for Canada customers (something that BOTM has been asked for for a long time, and as soon as Aardvark ce on the scene they suddenly changed their tune). (edited) 2y
DisneyFan @swishandflick omg thank you for saying this! Im a BFF and I also felt their selection has been lacking lately. But I was afraid of saying something because everyone seems to love it and I didn‘t want to sound judgmental about other peoples reading choices. I‘m glad I‘m not only one feeling this way. When pirates come to Ithaca‘s shores, Penelope, Queen of Ithaca & wife of Odysseus, must use the cunning & power she has to protect her people.

This was at times lovely & mythical. But with the goddess Hera as narrator, we get a lot of tone shifts that pulled me out of the story. & Hera‘s presence is overwhelming sometimes, like she‘s the main character, not Penelope. The best scenes are when Penelope and her attendants work together. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BookmarkTavern Release date: September 9th, 2022 #ARC #NetGalley 2y
KathyWheeler Can you tell if there‘s a reason why the author chose Hera as a narrator? If it‘s Penelope‘s story, Hera seems a weird choice. 2y
BookmarkTavern @KathyWheeler I can see the thought process. Hera is the goddess of childbirth, the sanctity of marriage, and women‘s place in society. But, my biggest issue was tone. There would be gorgeous prose scenes, and then Hera would have a line like “Hey, prince, get a load of this!” which was very jarring. (edited) 2y
KathyWheeler @ozma.of.oz That does sound jarring. 2y
