This Bird Has Flown | Susanna Hoffs

A delightfully funny and romantic debut novel from Susanna Hoffs, celebrated performer and co-founder of The Bangles, that is "part British romcom, part Jane Eyre, and one hundred percent enjoyable" (Tom Perrotta). Music. Fate. Redemption. Love. Jane Start is thirty-three, broke, and recently single. Ten years prior, she had a hit song--written by world-famous superstar Jonesy--but Jane hasn't had a breakout since. Now she's living out of four garbage bags at her parents' house, reduced to performing to Karaoke tracks in Las Vegas. Rock bottom. But when her longtime manager Pippa sends Jane to London to regroup, she's seated next to an intriguing stranger on the flight--the other Tom Hardy, an elegantly handsome Oxford professor of literature. Jane is instantly smitten by Tom, and soon, truly inspired. But it's not Jane's past alone that haunts her second chance at stardom, and at love. Is Tom all that he seems? And can Jane emerge from the shadow of Jonesy's earlier hit, and into the light of her own? In turns deeply sexy, riotously funny, and utterly joyful, This Bird Has Flown explores love, passion, and the ghosts of our past, and offers a glimpse inside the music business that could only come from beloved songwriter Susanna Hoffs. "In this sexy, page-turning treat, Susanna Hoffs writes as engagingly as she sings." --Helen Fielding, author of the bestselling sensation Bridget Jones's Diary "An addictive medley of music, romance, secrets, and sex." --Tom Perrotta, New York Times bestselling author of The Leftovers

If this was a standard romance I would have been annoyed by the lack of communication being the sticking point between the lovers, but I‘m prepared to let that go here because I enjoyed all the musical references, the insiders knowledge of the music industry and the fun of guessing who inspired the characters. I‘m also wondering how many incidents were inspired by Susanna‘s real life experiences.

Prairiegirl_reading I didn‘t know she had written a book! Is this a debut? 1mo

I stumbled upon this in my Libby app and decided to give it a go. The author read the main character and the ridiculously talented and entertaining Juliet Stevenson performed the other characters. This was a fun little bubblegum listen with flawed, neurotic characters. Not bad to pass the time in the garden!

CarolynM Great review. I need to get to this soon. 5mo

I enjoyed all the music industry insiderness and refs in this squeaky-clean romance from one of the creators of The Bangles. Lots of great lyrics and etc. as Easter eggs (even the title refs a fav Beatles song).
The romance part was fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

LeeRHarry I just opened up Litsy whilst listening to Manic Monday - freaky! Great song 😊 11mo

Another formulaic romance in which the female protagonist suffers from crippling self-doubt, feeling personally and professionally stuck; she meets a wonderful man, they fall instantly in love and have copious amounts of tremendously satisfying sex without ever really getting to know each other. The past comes back to bite them in the ass; there‘s a contrived breakup, a professional breakthrough, and the inevitable reconciliation. Cute but weak.

CSeydel Things I liked: the characters were all fun and likable; the music-industry setting was interesting; lots of literary references. 1y
CSeydel But the minor characters seemed inconsistent and vaguely unnecessary. (Cynically: felt like a cheap way to diversify the cast.)

This may be me being dense, but the Big Problem from Jane‘s past never quite made sense to me, and her reaction to the Big Problem from Tom‘s past felt excessive and unnatural.

TheSpineView Good job for pushing to finish this book. 1y
CSeydel @TheSpineView I shouldn‘t be so harsh; it was entertaining. It started out really promising but flagged a bit as the plot waded into the inevitable conflict and resolution. 1y

I cannot get into this and the only character I even remotely care about is Pippa, who isn't in it enough to help me. I think I'm going to release this back to the library and move on.

Tiffiney I couldn't finish it either... 1y

Such a fun book. This author was one of the Bangles. Clearly quite a talented individual. So glad I picked this from #aardvark. I also quite love this cover.

“That‘s my not my kinda book,” I told myself, so I skipped buying it and checked it out at the library. Should have trusted my initial reaction. I won‘t pan it - there‘s an entire audience who will love it. I‘m just not it, despite my decades-long crush on Susanna Hoffs. I hoped for a little more rock n‘ roll on stage and a little less rock n‘ roll in bedrooms. A little more Almost Famous and a little less Music & Lyrics would have been nice.

This was okay. There is a blurb on the cover from Tom Perrotta saying this book is part British rom com ( yes -ish) and part Jane Eyre ( that is a stretch - at one point I really thought it was setting up for that and I was like Holy Crap, and then it was just meh) what it really is is YA with a lot of over thinking angst but with a 33 yr old

My oldest left on Sunday ( he spent the last school year back at home since he only had one uni credit left to do) to work at a new to him summer camp. My youngest went back to Toronto today b/c he‘s taking a course during intercession. Despite having practice with them both out of the house ( and often wanting a moments peace) I am floundering about the house in tears and trying to knock the easier things off my To Do list #readingspotisago

Tamra 😢 Oh, that is bittersweet. On the upside, new beginnings for each of you! 2y

Aardvark pick. This looks cute! Didn‘t choose Christina Lauren‘s newest on BOTM as my add on since I have that one on preorder from LitLove. So, my Aardvark pick fills my romance quota. lol This one shipped right before my BOTM box did. 😃

Jane Start is funny and quirky, and this makes her the perfect contrast in her relationship with Tom. I loved all Hoffs built this relationship from a meet cute on a plane, to the struggles that we all have dealing with new love, past relationships and those dreaded exes, as well as moving forward together. I also liked how Hoffs chronicled the anxieties Jane had about herself and her own talent, taking us on that journey to finding confidence.
