At their milestone high school reunion, a group of friends make a pact to finally achieve their high school superlatives one way or another, in the lively new novel from the acclaimed author of Last Summer at the Golden Hotel. In 1997, grunge is king, Titanic is a blockbuster (and Blockbuster still exists), and Thursday nights are for Friends. In Bellport, Connecticut, four best friends and high school seniors are ready to light the world on fire. Melissa Levin, Priya Chowdhury, Tara Taylor, and Suki Hammer are going places. Their yearbook superlatives confirm it: Most Likely to Win the White House, Cure Cancer, Open a Michelin-Starred Restaurant, and Join the Forbes 400. Fast forward twenty-five years and nothing has gone according to plan as the women regroup at their dreaded high school reunion. When a forgotten classmate emerges at the reunion with a surprising announcement, the friends dig out the yearbook and rethink their younger selves. Is it too late to make their dreams come true? Fueled by nostalgia and one too many drinks, they form a pact to push through their middle-aged angst to bring their teenage aspirations to fruition, dubbing themselves the "Most Likely Girls." Through the ensuing highs and lows, they are reminded of the enduring bonds of friendship, the ways our childhood dreams both sustain and surprise us -- and why it's deeply uncool to peak in high school.

This was a bit of a disappointment especially considering how enjoyable The Last Summer at the Golden Hotel was. The concept was interesting and should have definitely appealed to me given all the 90s references. But none of our main characters were likeable, and nothing really seemed to happen and what little did wrapped up in a nice neat impractical bow. Some details weren‘t accurate and perspective changes were off putting. #sundaybuddyread

Sargar114 The most disappointing was not being able to participate in the discussions for #sundaybuddyread. I bet they were great for this one! 1y
BennettBookworm Agreed 100%! Unlikeable characters, off-putting perspective shifts, and super unrealistic plot. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo

In the spirit of the September #sundaybuddyread , I thought I'd share a few pics from my high school years. My good pictures must be in a different box with my yearbooks, so, for now, you'll have to take my word for it when I tell you I was the CHS 1997 Class Actress. We didn't have a full list of Most Likelys, but we had Best Eyes, Best Smile, Class Clown, etc.

My outfits brought to you by Contempo Casuals & Pacific Sunwear.

#SummerEndReadathon #Rushathon

After placing the author‘s previous book Last Summer at the Golden Hotel on my 2022 favorite reads, I was excited for this book & used a #BOTM credit to get a copy for #SundayBuddyRead. Such a disappointment! Mostly unlikable characters, every cliche, plot line, & topic she could imagine thrown in there. Generally, it‘s just a hot mess of a book. Thankfully the weekly group discussions make a bad book entertaining!

TheSpineView What a disappointment! At least you can go on to something better. 1y

So disappointing! This felt more like a draft of a book than a finished book. The characters were not relatable, and the plot made little sense. Friedland‘s book Last Summer at the Golden Hotel was much more enjoyable. I only stuck with it for the beloved #SundayBuddyRead 😅

Prairiegirl_reading Good on you for finishing. I couldn‘t. 1y
Karisa @Prairiegirl_reading There was some skimming involved to make it to the end. 😂 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @Karisa you still did much better than I did! After week one I tried to stick with it but I think I read three pages and I couldn‘t force myself to do it! It was just so bad!!! 1y

Ok...I really tried to like this one. I thought I was enjoying it at first but then I quickly started disliking the characters. Melissa and Tara were annoying, Priya was somewhat likeable, and Suki...I simply didn't care for. However, it was an easy read.

mcctrish Melissa grew on me and I need more time with Priya having some backbone to change my opinion of her 🤷🏻‍♀️ Tara never redeemed herself and Suki was awol for too much of the story to care about 1y

#sundaybuddyread @TheBookHippie

I'm perpetually behind this year, but I'm hopeful that my 2024 schedule will be a little more accommodating to reading.

vlwelser How did you wait long enough to take a picture? I think mine was open before I even got back it the house. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @vlwelser ? I wanted to tear it open in the lobby of my building, but managed to restrain myself long enough to photograph it, crop the "I'm so excited" sticker, make the graphic, and get puppy love from being out for a couple hours. Sometimes, I amaze myself. 1y

Pass on this one. I just didn‘t get it. I understand what the author was trying to do, but it just wasn‘t for me. I didn‘t like the characters, the story, really just didn‘t care for this one.

I almost never pan a book so I feel bad, but I feel like there wasn‘t much I enjoyed about this. The characters were all kinda the worst without any real redeeming qualities/moments. And any issues they had felt completely glossed over by the end with no real depth. I liked the premise but this wasn‘t what I thought it was gonna be. Looking forward to finishing up discussion on it though Sunday

Definitely not as enjoyable as Last Summer at the Golden Hotel! While I appreciated the references to ‘90s pop culture (this is my era, though the characters are a tad older than me), I was not fully enamored with any of the MCs. As the book progressed, I found I was more frustrated than anything with their stories. Spoiler comment below that had me rolling my eyes. At least I finished this with #Zeke resting on me. #CatsOfLitsy #SundayBuddyRead

Librarybelle The fight between the 4 of them near the end of the book was ridiculous to me. Were they just getting out their frustrations on each other? It became a bit too personal. It was almost like the author felt the need for them to clear the air amongst themselves for some reason. It was a pretty weak part, in my mind. 1y

Still trying to play catch up for #sundaybuddyread but had to look this up cause it didn‘t seem accurate for a supposed time capsule of 1997. Enough to make me stop reading…sigh. 😕

AmyG I‘m not surprised. Just….lazy. 1y

I won‘t say much as we have our last discussion next Sunday but I felt each of these main characters were stereotypical tropes of middle aged women: the working mom with the oblivious selfish spouse, the clueless divorcee, the ball busting CEO, and I‘m not even sure about the 40+ woman whose parents are still paving her way. Not a fan.

TheSpineView Bummer! Hopefully the next book will be better! 1y

Teaching full time has me so overstimulated by the time I get home I‘m struggling to stay on top of all my reads 😢 this week I plan to finish Murder, Most likely and Song of the Cell and then maybe begin something just for fun before October spooky read season starts and all my new buddy reads begin again. Or pace myself better

AnnR @Kspenmoll, I am so sorry about your shoulder injury and wish you a full recovery.
For the series, there is a new one out called The Old Rogue of Limehouse (book #9). I haven't read it yet, as I'm hoping the price will come down or my library will purchase it. Ann Granger has another mystery series too but I haven't read any of those yet.
