Blackwater Falls | Ausma Zehanat Khan
15 posts | 11 read | 13 to read
From critically acclaimed author Ausma Zehanat Khan, Blackwater Falls is the first in a timely and powerful crime series, introducing Detective Inaya Rahman. Girls from immigrant communities have been disappearing for months in the Colorado town of Blackwater Falls, but the local sheriff is slow to act and the fates of the missing girls largely ignored. At last, the calls for justice become too loud to ignore when the body of a star student and refugee--the Syrian teenager Razan Elkader--is positioned deliberately in a mosque. Detective Inaya Rahman and Lieutenant Waqas Seif of the Denver Police are recruited to solve Razans murder, and quickly uncover a link to other missing and murdered girls. But as Inaya gets closer to the truth, Seif finds ways to obstruct the investigation. Inaya may be drawn to him, but she is wary of his motives: he may be covering up the crimes of their boss, whose connections in Blackwater run deep. Inaya turns to her female colleagues, attorney Areesha Adams and Detective Catalina Hernandez, for help in finding the truth. The three have bonded through their experiences as members of vulnerable groups and now they must work together to expose the conspiracy behind the murders before another girl disappears. Delving deep into racial tensions, and police corruption and violence, Blackwater Falls examines a series of crimes within the context of contemporary American politics with compassion and searing insight.

A teen Syrian refuge is murdered and posed in her mosque in a town beset by racial tension. Inaya, a Muslim-Americans, is part of a special police unit on the case. I really enjoyed the exploration of different facets of this community as well as getting to know Inaya and her family a bit. I definitely look forward to future installments!

I liked the story, but it seemed a little overloaded with characters. Blackwater Falls is a very timely, relevant novel. It covers a lot of themes–racism and prejudice; anti-refugee and anti-Muslim sentiment; love, family and friends; as well as loyalty and courage– that are quite representitive of today‘s society. The characters are very representative as well, coming from all walks of life and from so many beautiful ethnicities and cultures.

This was a great read! Detective Inaya, female and Muslim, arrives in a small, bigoted town... you can imagine how the welcome wagon takes that one. Still, she perseveres through the discrimination, because justice needs to be served for a young Muslim woman found murdered in her mosque. The corrupt sheriff needs to be watched, so does the crazy anti-immigrant biker group. Oh, and did I mention there's a psycho church? My ARC was provided by SMP!

I‘m happy to have this new series come along by one of my favorite crime/detective authors. I quite enjoyed this story set in a fictitious town near Denver Colorado. I also appreciated the issue‘s she focused on concerning social justice.

November roundup! Only 5 books this month.

Blackwater Falls and The Last Hill were the only ones that kept my interest throughout.

I was excited to start a new mystery series & this one sounded promising with a diverse cast & small-town setting. But plot & character development fall by the wayside for the author to include a range of political & social commentary. Basic research goes undone for the police procedure & law (CO is a 1-party consent state for recorded conversations) & the romance between subordinate/superior is especially yucky alongside all of the other stances.

The first book in a new mystery series featuring detective Inaya Rahman as she works cases and faces racism and sexism from her colleagues. It‘s very political, but it doesn‘t slow down the story or feel too didactic. Loved all the main characters - Inaya‘s teammates and her family - and I can‘t wait for the next installment!

MonicaLoves2Read I can't either. Loved this first book in this new series 2y

This is a compelling mystery about a Muslim police detective dealing with murder and corruption in a Colorado town. The author holds a Ph.D. in International Human Rights Law and her experience with vulnerable communities is well represented in this story, giving it more depth than normally expected in a police procedural. At times heartbreaking, the mystery is well plotted and I look forward to the next one in the series. 4/5 stars.

Listening to an audio ARC of this detective novel, out Tuesday. Really enjoying the balance of themes and introduction of this new kind of detective, one sent from a community response unit sent to investigate a town with a police department under scrutiny. Really awesome plot interweaving a lot of current political and social pressures.

Jolynne I love her books. 2y

First in a new series!! Detective Inaya Rahman is a Muslim that works for the Community Response Unit of the DPD. She is called to the murder scene of a Muslim girl. The sheriff is against the CRU. Her boss seems to not like her. The community she's a part of doesn't trust her, because she's the police.

This book needs to come with trigger warnings.

Book publishes November 8, 2022

Ausma Zehanat Khan‘s novels never disappoint. TW for police brutality, violence against women, Islamophobia, & white supremacy. This is the 1st in a new procedural series feat. Det. Inaya Rahman. The mystery was complex & twisty, with a solution both believable & not easily guessed. The detectives have intricate backstories that Khan painstakingly develops. The supporting cast is equally well developed and I especially loved Inaya‘s sisters. ⬇️

DGRachel I‘m not sure how I feel about one of the subplots and the complications that creates, but I trust AZK, so I‘ll reserve judgment until I see how it plays out in the next book. 🤔 2y
