Sinister Graves | Marcie R. Rendon
10 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
Set in 1970s Minnesota on the White Earth Reservation, Pinckley Prize-winner Marcie R. Rendon's gripping new mystery follows Cash Blackbear, a young Ojibwe woman, as she attempts to discover the truth about the disappearances of Native girls and their newborns. A snowmelt has sent floodwaters down to the fields of the Red River Valley, dragging the body of an unidentified Native woman into the town of Ada. The only evidence the medical examiner recovers is a torn piece of paper inside her bra: a hymnal written in English and Ojibwe. Cash Blackbear, a 19-year-old Ojibwe woman, sometimes helps Sheriff Wheaton, her guardian, on his investigations. Now she knows her search for justice for this anonymous victim will take her to the White Earth Reservation, a place she once called home. When Cash happens upon two small graves in the yard of a rural, "speak-in-tongues kinda church," Cash is pulled into the lives of the malevolent pastor and his troubled wife while yet another Native woman dies in a mysterious manner.

Cash is back! The Red River has flooded much of the valley and a woman‘s body has floated into Ada. Sheriff Wheaton hopes Cash can help. As Cash investigates she is intrigued by a prairie church pastor and his wife with a connection to the murdered woman. I love that Cash is also learning about friendships and relationships as she sleuths. If only her judo helped more! This 3rd in the series is a pick and rates 4 of 5 ⭐️.

After reading books 2 and 3 of the Cash Blackbear series in November, I‘m all caught up. I love these and I think they are kind of different than a typical mystery. Cash sort of meanders as she figures out what is going on. #SeriesLove2023

Of course, after finishing the third one I frantically searched to see if there would be a fourth. It‘s not listed on GR, but I found an interview where Rendon said she is working on the fourth book.

This is the third installment of the Cash Blackbear series and, as much as I love Cash‘s character, she spends a lot of time driving, smoking, playing pool, and drinking beer. She‘s slow to make personal breakthroughs and I was getting impatient with her in this one. ⬇️

psalva The harrowing story of missing indigenous women and the action in the second half of this novel helped me to overlook the parts that dragged. I have high hopes for Cash whenever she returns. 1y

Although my TBR list includes plenty of backlist selections and classics, I also like to #ringinthenew and read books published more recently. Tagged book was the newest I read in 2022, published in October.

See comments for the oldest book read last year.

3rd in the series. Each book deals with a mystery and Cash discovering who she is after such a traumatic childhood. This book is dedicated to #MMIW and #stolenchildren.
I hope to read more of Cash Blackbear.

charl08 Ooh! I didn't know there was a new one. I think this series is just brilliant.Thank you for posting. 2y

This series just gets better and better! Cash Blackbear grows in skill and knowledge and personal relationships and has quickly become one of my favorite heroines. There are times when I find myself yelling, “No! Cash don‘t go in there! Don‘t do that!”, but it‘s in her nature. She feels compelled to help the helpless. I hope there will be more books in this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

charl08 Me too. Looking forward to #4 2y
