The German Wife: A Novel | Kelly Rimmer
11 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
Skillfully researched and powerfully written, The German Wife will capture you from the first page. Madeline Martin, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Bookshop in London The New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Orphan returns with a gripping novel inspired by the true story of Operation Paperclip: a controversial secret US intelligence program that employed former Nazis after WWII. Berlin, Germany, 1930When the Nazis rise to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes and her academic husband benefit from the military ambitions of Germanys newly elected chancellor when Jrgen is offered a high-level position in their burgeoning rocket program. Although they fiercely oppose Hitlers radical views, and joining his ranks is unthinkable, it soon becomes clear that if Jrgen does not accept the job, their income will be taken away. Then their children. And then their lives. Huntsville, Alabama, 1950Twenty years later, Jrgen is one of many German scientists pardoned and granted a position in Americas space program. For Sofie, this is a chance to leave the horrors of her past behind. But when rumors about the Rhodes familys affiliation with the Nazi party spread among her new American neighbors, idle gossip turns to bitter rage, and the act of violence that results tears apart a family and leaves the community wonderingis it an act of vengeance or justice? An unforgettable novel that explores important questions highly relevant to the world today. Christine Wells, author of Sisters of the Resistance

I've probably read ten or so fiction books about WW2 and they all come from different perspectives. It is a story about two women on different sides of the war, switching between Germany and America. I learned so many things that I had never even heard of before, like Mittelwerk.
I learned about Project Paperclip, the Dust Bowl, & Kristallnacht. It wasn't violently graphic but it had me emotional at times because of how helpless things could be.

Discovering the work of a talented author for the 1st time is a pleasure, especially when it's historical fiction about WWII. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝗪𝐢𝐟𝐞 is the 1st book I have read by 𝐊𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫. I intended to read just a few minutes but she pulled me into a fascinating, frightening story with eerie parallels to the U.S. today. I suspect she's going to break my heart, but I plan to keep reading ...

This is a heart-breaking story of two families on opposite sides during WWII. It is a story of two women fighting to protect their families in some of the worst of times. Sometimes the choices made have devastating consequences.

A very unique HF book for the WW2 time period that focuses on Operation Paperclip which is not widely used as a subject matter in books during this time period. The book is highly emotional, riveting and gut wrenching . I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and felt that I learned a bit more history of this period which really added to my enjoyment! Many thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the advanced copy in exchange for my review.

It amazes me how authors keep finding different stories to tell about WWII. This one does a wonderful job of imagining the difficult choices some Germans faced and then the trouble they had adapting to new lives. It started out a little slow and jumped between people and times a lot at the beginning, but I was soon caught up in the fascinating story inspired by some true events. Like the best historical fiction I learned new things. 4.25/5
