Gormenghast | Mervyn Laurence Peake
The second volume in the GORMENGHAST trilogy. Titus Groan, now aged seven, has come to understand that the kingdom he has inherited has an attendant evil which has begun to spread. I read this article and (despite shade thrown on JRRT) thought Burnside's love of Peake's "Gormenghast" and Powys's "A Glastonbury Romance" made him my "spirit animal". I was saddened, then, to see that he died earlier this year ?

The_Book_Ninja Never read Gormenghast. Worth a go? 4mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja YES! Mervyn Peake is one of my holy triumvirate, the others being JRRT and PKD. Peake is, perhaps, the one most likely to divide opinion, but if you like baroque, grotesque and gothic, then he's the bailiwick to be in. 4mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble I‘ll try and give it a bash this side of Xmas 4mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I've been threatening myself to do a re-read for about five years, but it's long and dense, and I've been a bit too flibbertigibbet to restart it, but perhaps I'll have a go, too 🤔 4mo

1. Kat. Katherine is my middle name. It‘s hard to get people who‘ve known you for a long time to call you by a new name😅.

2. Fushia. A French name like Sabine would be awesome.

When I first tried to read this series, years and years ago, I couldn‘t. I literally could not hold all the images in my head and still follow the story. I held on to the books though and one day I found I could read it and it was delightful!

Pickpick

Titus is growing up and we get several new characters, including the chamber of grotesques which is the Gormenghast school staff room, several of whose inmates reminded me not a little of the beaks of St Custards. As before, long descriptive passages are periodically interrupted by moments of tension and high drama, and there is even comedy, chiefly at the expense of poor Irma Prunesquallor.

rwmg Irma Prunesquallor's soiree is one of the funniest things I've ever read 2y

In Mervyn Peake's classic the titanic castle is just as important a character as any of the humans, so much so that this edition only has illustrations of the #building itself. #maylovesclassics @Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 #foliofreaks

2BR02B These editions are so cool! 6y
Moray_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @2BR02B Titus Alone is just as gorgeous, it just doesn't have the castle on the cover 6y

JazzFeathers Oh my goodness! That's gorgeous! 😍😍😍 What edition is this? 6y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers it's Folio Society from 1992 6y
saresmoore Listen: you are making this book-buying ban very hard! I am counting the minutes until I get to start reading this tonight. 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore I'm so sorry (am I? 🤔). Sadly, this set is out of print but there are some great second hand copies like this around. It might make a dent in your book fund though! It's a wonderfully strange, atmospheric series, there's nothing quite like it. If you'll take my advice you'll avoid the fourth book written by Peake's widow: it doesn't measure up. 6y
saresmoore Advice taken! There‘s something very satisfying about the thrill of the hunt for an out of print book. With any luck, I‘ll have plenty of book fund accumulation to work with! 6y
vivastory One day I'm going to write a heist novel & the prize is going to be your Folio collection. 😜 It'll be called Oceans 42 (after Adams answer to the meaning of life) 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory I would read it. Even though I'd be the victim... 6y
vivastory 😬😂Who would you want to play you in the movie adaptation? 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory Anne Hathaway. We're NOTHING alike but it would give her an opportunity to improve that god-awful Yorkshire accent from One Day! 6y
vivastory 😂 I have never seen One Day, but now I'm definitely interested! 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory I've only seen bits. The accent is abysmal 6y

Finished just in time for #bookclub this Saturday!

I liked this novel a bit better than Titus Groan, although it does have some pacing issues. Titus‘s story continues with him as a boy. Things got unexpectedly sad, although I shouldn‘t‘ve been so surprised because Peake obviously has no problem being cruel to his characters. Great villain in Steerpike and the castle is a great setting.

On to Titus Alone!

So my faith in the BBC is shaky after the City & the City but it's still news and perhaps with Gaiman at the helm there's a chance of something special. (Image is from the BBC adaptation in 2000, I can't believe that was 18 years ago!)

GrilledCheeseSamurai I saw this the other day and I've had my fingers crossed since. 🤞 7y
Moray_Reads @TobeyTheScavengerMonk you might be interested to hear about this 7y
vivastory I was really intrigued by this. 7y

Moray_Reads @vivastory have you read the books? 7y
vivastory Not yet 😬 7y
Moray_Reads @vivastory 😂 the first two are absolutely brilliant and the third is difficult to judge due to Peake's untimely death but still very worth reading (the less said about the fourth volume written by his wife the better!) 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘ve owned the books for a looooooooong time (I think I bought them because Gaiman mentioned them actually). Time to move them up the TBR! 7y
Moray_Reads @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I just assumed you would have read them! As I said to Scott, the first two are outstanding and if the third feels a little unfinished and out-of-place I think it's down to the fact that Peake never got to finish the series 7y
saresmoore Fortunately, I‘m on a prolonged book buying fast, but I may have just happened to find that there is a Folio Society set of this trilogy... 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore it's gorgeous, I bought it a couple of years ago (of course) 7y
AlaMich @saresmoore So, that‘s the “out clause” in the contract...if it‘s a Folio Society edition you‘re allowed? 😊 7y
Moray_Reads @AlaMich @saresmoore obviously the most expensive books don't count 😉 7y
saresmoore @AlaMich Hahaha! I wish. No out clause. And I‘m going for a year. Don‘t ask me why, I‘m not honestly sure yet. BUT, I do have a birthday in May. I‘m just doing my due diligence in case I get asked for a wishlist. 😬 7y
vivastory @saresmoore A year book buying ban?! I don't know if I could make it for a month... 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore a YEAR?! You're breaking my heart 💔. I just bought 4 books in the last ten minutes 😅 7y
AlaMich @Moray_Reads @saresmoore That has a backward sort of logic that appeals to me. 😊 7y
AlaMich @Moray_Reads 🤣🤣 7y
saresmoore @vivastory @Moray_Reads I know. I don‘t know. It‘s nuts. And it DOES NOT HELP that my 9yo has purchased three books in the last week with her allowance money. I only started April 1, so orders are still trickling in and I haven‘t started suffering withdrawals yet... 7y
saresmoore @AlaMich I blame my “Rhetorical Eloquence” professor for all the appealing backward logic I concoct. My husband has yet to defeat me in a debate (argument). 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore you should put a dollar away for every day you manage, then you'll have a nice little nest egg come May 2019! 7y
saresmoore Oh, that‘s a great idea! And then I‘ll spend it all on books! 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore well, that goes without saying! 😊 7y

This news has made me so excited! I loved the BBC series, but confess I‘ve only read the first book.

The first thing I thought when I saw this? #Gormenghastbuddyread!😄🎉 Would there be any interest? I‘ve never hosted a buddy read so if anyone was interested in taking it on, that would be awesome, but if not, I might see if I can drum something up for May/ June? I‘m finding BR‘s a great way to get through my TBR & this is high on the list!

laurieluna I've never read these! Buddy reads are easy to organise once you get into the swing of things. I'm enjoying hosting the one for Children of Blood and Bone. Give it a go! 😄 7y

He is climbing the spiral staircase of the soul of Gormenghast, bound for some pinnacle of the itching fancy - some wild, invulnerable eyrie best known to himself; where he can watch the world spread out below him, and shake exultantly his clotted wings.

One of my favorite books. The language is gorgeous, and this article explains the effect of encountering Titus' world, exactly how shocked I felt starting the book: you know it is going to be freaking great just by the first paragraph and you settle in for the ride. http://lithub.com/on-the-13-words-that-made-me-a-writer/

Over their irregular roofs would fall throughout the seasons, the shadows of time-eaten buttresses, of broken and lofty turrets, and, most enormous of all, the shadow of the Tower of Flints. This tower, patched unevenly with black ivy, arose like a mutilated finger from among the fists of knuckled masonry and pointed blasphemously at heaven. At night the owls made of it an echoing throat; by day it stood voiceless and cast its long shadow.

"And the days move on and the names of the months change and the four seasons bury one another and the field-mice draw upon their granaries. The air is murky, and the sun is like a raw wound in the grimy flesh of a beggar, and the rags of the clouds are clotted. The sky has been stabbed and has been left to die above the world, filthy, vast and bloody."

I had to get in on the #Shelfie action for #FunFridayPhoto. This is (part of) my Folio Society collection. Duckens, Gaskell, Dumas, Douglas Adams, Salman Rushdie etc. They were broadly arranged by colour but that has mostly broken down now 😳

Moray_Reads @Libby1 That's so cool! I used to live in Brontë country. Love the first Gormenghast, adore the second, the third veers wildly into unexpected territory, it's such a shame Peake died before he could tie everything together. They're all definitely worth reading 8y
