Duck for President is a children's book by Doreen Cronin about a duck who is introduced to the political world starting with an election on his farm home.

This is a great book for a read-aloud, especially when introducing democracy to an older grade! Definitely recommend for any grade though!

Duck for President is a cute story that is based off the Farmer Brown books. This time, duck is tired of how things are being done on the farm and decides he could do a better job. He then goes on to become governor and then president of the country. This would be a great book to introduce government, democracy, and voting. I would definitely use this in the classroom.

This is MF. This book is great for RA. This book is about a duck wanting to be in charge and becoming a president. It goes through an adventure throughout the book. In the end, there is a funny twist. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/duck-president... This website has true or false questions where students can answer together as a class. Doing this helps students recall the story.

My Kindergarten is learning about the presidents for the month of November, starting with George Washington! Each student created their own little representation of our first president.

Duck For President is a fun book about a duck who is tired of farm life and ready to be the one who has a day. Of course, ducks are the only ones who understand him, but his charisma carries him up to the White House!

Great children‘s book for elections.

This book gave me big Animal Farm vibes, but definitely a more kid friendly version with a happier ending than the novel. Really enjoyed this!

Duck for President by Doreen Cronin was written in 2004 and is a Caldecott Honor book. This book was so cute! It really reminded me of the novel Animal Farm with the animals wanting to take over the farm. It was so fun and comical to follow Duck in his journey to fame. I think kids would enjoy this and it also teaches them a little about government. The illustrations also play a huge part in the impact of the book.

Duck for President by Doreen Cronin was published in 2004. It received the Best Illustrated Children‘s Book Award. I loved this book because it shows how some people may not see how hard work is until they are put in another‘s position. I thought that the illustrations were funny and helped better exemplify the story.

Duck for President by Doreen Cronin, Illustrations by Betsy Lewin (Caldecott Award) - This hilarious MF story is about an unhappy duck who decides he wants to become President! He runs a campaign, gives speeches, and even kisses babies on his journey to Presidency! At the end of the story, he returns to the farm because being a President is no fun.

alexialovesmith 5. I believe this story is best fit for a RA because it provides teachable moments about our government system. This book encompasses UDLS7.1 since it explains the power of choice. https://doreencronin.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/DUCKACTIVITIES.pdf These activities are excellent resources for before and after reading. Pages 2-3 of this PDF touch on ELS4, background knowledge. #ucflae3414su19 5y
MeganKlein @alexialovesmith, I love the resource you provided, and I totally agree that this book would be a great tool to help teach about our government system. This is an awesome read for when election time comes around! 5y
DrSpalding You may need to invite Megan in to your class to perform the storytelling! The author resource is excellent and this book is perfect to integrate language arts and social studies. (edited) 5y

“Duck for President” is a modern fantasy (F) book written by Doreen Cronin. This story depicts the story of an ambitious duck who becomes sick of his farm-life. His solution? Running for President of the United States. This would be a good shared reading (SR).

This lesson plan would align well with UDL principles 7.1 and 7.2 and ESOL 36.

DrSpalding I like the idea of shared reading and this is an excellent book to teach social studies concepts for civics and government. Same previous comments. 6y

This modern fantasy book, Duck for President by Doreen Cronin, won the 2004 Parents Choice Award and would be a great book to RA. Duck wanted to do something different than chores, so he decided to organize and election to make him president! 🎤🦆

DianaHerrera **Edit above: Duck wanted to do something different than doing chores, so he decided to organize an election to make himself president of the farm!** https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/duck-president... (edited) 6y
DianaHerrera Before reading the book the students are to look at the cover of the book and talk about the pictures and the title (i.e.: what are the color schemes? Why might Duck be standing on the microphone, etc.) After the students have listened to the story, the students will do a True or False activity. Since it is a short lesson, there is an extension that I absolutely love! It is called, “Vote for Me (students name goes here).” 6y
DianaHerrera Students can create their very own poster that has a motivational message that would want citizens to vote for them. You can even have the students to really vote for who think should be president and whoever has the most votes, wins. What they win, of course, all depends on the teacher. 6y

DianaHerrera UDL 9.1: Duck for President is a great book that promotes what they should expect when it comes to election day which should also motivate themselves to think about who they should vote and why. ESOL 1: Providing questions during/after the reading allows students to build clarification of the story to complete the activity. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 #VoteForDuck #ClassroomLibrary 6y

3⭐️ Man this duck means business. When he decides he no longer wants to mow the lawn and make coffee, Duck runs for Farmer. He decided that was hard work, and ran for governor. But that was still too tough, so now it's time to be president. Duck learns that just because a job looks easier, does not mean it is.

drokka @DuckOfDoom I'm thinking this might be a lovely book 😉 7y
LibrarianRyan @drokka there is an entire duck series from Cronin and the ducks first spear in Click clack moo. The ducks are the trouble makers. Plus you should check out David Shannon. 7y

Best RA, Doreen Cronin worked with Betsy Lewin to create a great F which was New York Times Best Illustrated Book in 2004. Duck is back with all the other animals but this time, he is sick of Farmer Brown's rules and holds an election to be in charge of the farm. He keeps having different elections until he moves all the way up to presidency. A resource that gives a lot of great activities to do in relation to the text is

alyssahp https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/duck-president.... UDL 2.5 illustrating through multiple media & EL 29 using a variety of reference materials are both great ways to expand the text by using real world elections and presidents as examples. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y
