Why Did I Ever
Why Did I Ever | Mary Robison
10 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
After a ten-year silence, Robison has emerged with a novel so beguiling and funny that it has brought critics and her live-reading audiences to their feet. "Why Did I Ever" takes readers along on the darkest of private journeys. The story, told by a woman named Money Breton, is submitted like a furious and persuasive diary--a tale as fierce and taut as its fictional teller.

Mehso-so

I found parts of this short book to be quite funny, and it nailed what an ADHD brain can feel like. But I think my own ADHD brain actually struggled with the fragmented style, so it took me an embarrassing amount of time to finish it.

Can anyone tell me what is meant by the term “fragment novel”? The article defines the word “contemporary” (duh) but not “fragment novel.” Hmmm...

GingerAntics Fragment novel? I‘m almost afraid to ask. It doesn‘t sound good. 5y
GingerAntics GOOGLE SPEAKS!!! “A fragmentary novel is a novel made of fragments, vignettes, segments, documents or chapters that can be read in isolation and/or as part of the greater whole of the book. ... Some of these fragmented novels are also categorized as short story collections or epistolary novels.” That actually doesn‘t sound bad. I kind of like books like that to help break things up a bit. Texreader @GingerAntics Yes once you explained it, it doesn‘t sound too bad but I think it‘s a terrible phrase to describe it. It makes me want to run the other direction. Like buying a “fragment” of a cake. That‘s why they call it a piece of cake. Fragment, to me, sounds like you‘re getting ripped off. 😉 5y

Texreader @ItsAnotherJen You‘re welcome! I‘m still adding books from the article to my tbr list! And I love that they‘re all short! 5y
Eggs This was a great article!! 5y
merelybookish I would assume a fragment novel is episodic, one that doesn't rely on a clear plot. 5y
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 that‘s a great way to describe it. It makes it sounds broken or something. Not a fan. It needs a new name. 5y

I have long thought pharmaceutical drugs were the solution and I was right about that and that's correct. Still, you have to consider, with even the best prescription drugs, who it is who's taking them.

What the hell kind of drug do I take to get out of this moment? I would go up, down, or sideways.

I just regret everything and using my turn signal is too much trouble. Fuck you. Why should you get to know where I'm going, I don't.

Part two of the appropriately titled reading list Just Fuck Me All The Way Up. I'm trying real hard to never sleep again, I reckon.
