The Perks of Loving a Wallflower
The Perks of Loving a Wallflower | Erica Ridley
25 posts | 16 read | 13 to read
Fans of Bridgerton will love this delightful Regency romp (Julia Quinn, New York Times bestselling author?) in which a proper Society miss recruits a very improper lady grifter in a quest for vengeance, only to find love instead. As a master of disguise, Thomasina Wynchester can be a polite young ladyor a bawdy old man. Anything to solve the case. Her latest assignment unveils a top-secret military cipher covering up an enigma that goes back centuries. But when Tommys beautiful new client turns out to be the highborn lady shes secretly smitten with, more than her mission is at stake . . . Bluestocking Miss Philippa York doesnt believe in love. Her cold heart didn't pitter-patter when she was betrothed to a duke, nor did it break when he married someone else. All Philippa desires is to rescue her priceless manuscript and decode its clues to unmask a villain. She hates that she needs a man's helpso shes delighted to discover the clever, charming baron at her side is in fact a woman. Her cold heart . . . did it just pitter-patter?

Delightful semi-historical romp with non-binary main character, queer love story and liberal sprinkling of feminist messaging among tidbits of mystery and derring do.
Hard of hearing rep

⚠️ queer character might be demisexual rep, but due to period typical mindsets, she speaks in less than flattering terms about herself prior to experiencing desire with romantic lead; these terms reflect negative/ignorant sentiments about asexuality

Have I ever identified as hard as this with a gender-free style statement?

3.5⭐

This was fine. The premise is interesting, and the characters are fine. I was just a bit underwhelmed by pretty much all of it, the writing was fine, if sometimes a bit cheesy, the plot was predictable, but fine. I just have read some really great books and this was quick but a bit boring.

I do kind of hate the cover after reading the book (as one of the protagonists is gender nonconforming and would only dress like the cover image as a disguise not as herself), but this book was super cute and fun and I really enjoyed it. The protagonists are relatable and funny, the adventure was interesting and exciting, and I enjoy the side characters a lot too. Looking forward to continuing the series. Definitely recommended!

Casey and I are in perfect agreement that THE PERKS OF LOVING A WALLFLOWER is a wonder and a delight! Bonus points because it‘s really f/nb, not f/f like all the marketing copy says. My heart sings whenever I find another genderfluid character—and when that genderfluid character comes with a pack of fascinating siblings? Sign me up for the rest of the series. #AuldLangSpine

MeganAnn Yes!! I absolutely loved Tommy… and all the Winchesters. If you visit the author‘s website, she has some other novellas available for free that fall in between the main titles in the series and give a little more insight into the character‘s lives. I highly recommend checking those out too. 2y
xicanti @MeganAnn I‘ve already nabbed the first novella! I plan on reading it fairly soon. 2y

I got four #AuldLangSpine titles on today‘s library run, plus more Yona and a romance I‘ve looked forward to for a while now! Alas, I was at home before I realized I left Yona Vol 25 on the shelf. I‘ll have to go back for it tomorrow or Saturday morning. At least the rest of my in transit holds should‘ve arrived by then.

Low pick. I loved the Wynchesters (not enough to seek out the rest of the series though) and the bluestocking reading circle. Philippa‘s parents were vile. I felt like Tommy‘s insecurities were overdone but the conflict made sense. I‘m not rushing out to find more by Ridley but I enjoyed this well enough.

Today‘s library #bookhaul is actually all for me! That almost never happens. The tagged is a #blameitonLitsy, and the MG is from A Mighty Girl (I think) but I‘m excited for both. I need some quicker reads to get my momentum back after a slow few weeks

While I love the historical queer romance cover, I hate when covers don't match the characters- as Teddy has short hair and the only time we see her dressed up as a lady, it's as an old doddering aunt. Someone mentioned that this book should be titled the Perks of Loving a Bluestocking, and I second that! But the title wouldn't have made as much sense. The romance was okay, but I was in it for Teddy's family and the subplot.

Last review for today.

I LOVED this f/f regency romance! Tommy is delightful, the Wynchesters are all a lot of fun, and Philippa is the bookish wallflower bluestocking kind of character I immediately love. I throughly enjoyed the way Ridley wrote these two women and their journey to each other. This is my first book by Ridley, but it will not be the last and I‘m going to go back and read the first book in this series plus the two novellas soon.

MeganAnn Another #swoonathon read @kimmypete1 @MidnightBookGirl 💖 This is also my historical romance choice for #nsr22 #noshamereadathon22 @Nessavamusic 3y

I really enjoyed this, but the cover does not really match what‘s happening in the book and that drives me nuts! #swoonathon

It is possible I should have thought through my choice of reading material when visiting my homophobic grandmother who has forgotten (the only blessing of dementia) who I married. This is 2/5s of my pbook reading material.

Good thing I brought my ereader too.

julesG Enjoy the books. Can highly recommend Erica Ridley's book. 3y

My #November pick for #12Booksof2021

For as much as I love romance, this year was not great for romance imo. This was an exception. Absolutely charming characters, found family and an excellent romance. This author was a new find for me this year and I look forward to reading more from her!

Andrew65 Looks good. 3y

Spent the afternoon working on possible #NoShameReadathon22 titles, all subject to change

1/6: Romance
1. Contemporary: Plan to use the next contemporary romance from my prepaid #readromancerepeat subscription
2. Historical: Bringing Down the Duke OR the tagged book as I‘ll probably read both this year
3. Self-published: Her First Taste of Fire
4. Dark: Neon Gods; this is only title I don‘t already own
5. YA: From Twinkle with Love

This is absolutely charming and adorable. This is book 2 in a newer series by Erica Ridley. It is on its way to being one of my favorite historical romance series. Though each is a standalone, I do recommend reading book 1 of the Wild Wynchesters first! 4.5⭐️ #romantsy

Oh gosh, I was so excited for this book after reading the prior one in the series, and mix of sort of zany stealing a manuscript to upend a spy who stole his cipher managed to never feel too ridiculous and also be a great chance for these two characters to get to know each other. Tommy is my fave Wynchester (so far) so I was thrilled to see her find happiness.

Since author and publisher just sent me a physical copy of the tagged book - 🎉😘

This sapphic historical romance has witty banter, strong heroines, a found family, book love, and is the second in a series.

PS: the couple on the cover is a couple in RL. Due to Covid the publishers were about to use a stock photo. Luckily the model for the cover brought her wive, who was willing to join her for the shoot.

Soubhiville I love that photo story! 3y

This was between a Pick and So-So for me. Very much liked the characters and their romance. Loved Tommy's family, the Wynchesters. Philippa's discovery of self was wonderful. But the side plot could not keep my interest at all. It felt like it was taking away from the story. Out 10/26.
