So much I loved about this, and so much I didn‘t.

This one introduces the reader to anthropologist Dr. Gideon Oliver. As a visiting professor for the Armed Forces in Europe, he is caught up in a deadly spy game.

Liked - Dr. Oliver (in spite of his foibles), John Lau, the anthropological forensics

Disliked - Sexy bits (way too personal and detailed, unnecessary), very violent attacks

Overall, I enjoy this series & will definitely read the next

Gissy We never know if we are going to like the book until we read it. It is like a lottery ☺️But this is a book less in your tbr and you killed the curiosity🤗 4y

mabell @Gissy I‘m glad I read it! I really enjoyed seeing how Dr. Oliver got started being mixed up in mysteries. I read book 4 during Backpack Europe a couple of years ago and wanted to start from the beginning of the series - so thank you for sending it! 🥰 On to Book 2! 😄 4y

Gissy @mabell I understand how it is because even when some books have low review ratings, if I like the premise, I will read it, and I don‘t care if it is a so-so. I will be happy because I read it. Then, if the cover of a so-so book is pretty, it will probably stay with me. I think I have a problem🧐🤣I know I have “unusual” reading taste☺️I will like to try the first book in that series too🤗 4y

I'm panning this because I have a few choice thoughts about Gideon Oliver. To me, he comes off as a smug smart guy who, with his anthropological training, can insult you, and you'd have no idea. Sometimes I kinda like the snooty character; I don't in this case. Besides his opinion on women, he even tells a woman that she has a fat behind, but that it is okay because that makes her feminine. Ugh!

Anyhow, the mystery aspect was good!

Gideon Oliver, the MC, has also mentioned his distaste for feminism, but somehow the woman he told this to still wants to be around him (and she's a feminist!). Then, I came across this in the book. Does this mean women book collectors can't be attractive?? For an anthropologist, Gideon has a very narrow view on things...

Yes, it's an ancient kindle, but it works and great when I have to travel. (My bags won't weigh as much as they would have if I had to cart several books around)
