Sometimes I Trip on How Happy We Could Be
Sometimes I Trip on How Happy We Could Be | Nichole Perkins
A passionate, magnetic memoir that explores writer and podcast host Nichole Perkins's obsession with pop culture and the challenges of navigating relationships as a Black woman through feminism and Southern mores. Pop culture is the Pandora's Box of our lives. Racism, wealth, poverty, beauty, inclusion, exclusion, and hope -- all of these intractable and unavoidable features course through the media we consume. Examining pop culture's impact on her life, Nichole Perkins takes readers on a rollicking trip through the last twenty years of music, media and the internet from the perspective of one southern Black woman. She explores her experience with mental illness and how the TV series Frasier served as a crutch, how her role as mistress led her to certain internet message boards that prepared her for current day social media, and what it means to figure out desire and sexuality and Prince in a world where marriage is the only acceptable goal for women. Combining her sharp wit, stellar pop culture sensibility, and trademark spirited storytelling, Nichole boldly tackles the damage done to women, especially Black women, by society's failure to confront the myths and misogyny at its heart, and her efforts to stop the various cycles that limit confidence within herself. By using her own life and loves as a unique vantage point, Nichole humorously and powerfully illuminates how to take the best pop culture has to offer and discard the harmful bits, offering a mirror into our own lives.

Gotta love the book serendipity when two of your reads overlap somehow without your intention. Apparently, I've got happiness on the brain?

Suet624 I hope happiness is on your brain because you're happy! 4mo
Billypar @Suet624 Maybe that's it - I hope so at any rate! 😅 4mo

I wanted to love this book. I‘m glad I had the audiobook because I could skip sections quickly. The last quarter of the book was the best. I‘ve been trying to read this since last December.

(2021) It's a collection of personal essays about the author's experiences as an HBCU-educated black woman, cultural critic, and writer of the Internet age. For me it was sometimes TMI, but I admire her advocacy for owning one's own body, own pleasure, and own story. And to this father of a young man with developmental disabilities, her words about her brother with autism reach my soul. For that alone it's a pick.

I loved this audiobook. Featured in NPR‘s annual Books We Love (the new name for the Book Concierge) under the heading “let‘s talk about sex” and YES this book does! I appreciate the way Perkins knows what she wants and goes after exactly that. She‘s into “skinny dudes” who apparently are the best in bed 😂 🤷🏼‍♀️ who knew! I do love an essay collection and this one delivered!! #NPRBooksWeLove

This book is Nichole Perkins‘ memoir in essays. She has a wonderful voice and is frank about her love of sex without being prurient. It‘s so well balanced and she really had me wanting to keep reading. And I have two words for you: panty liner. (You have to read it and find out what I mean. It‘s quite a 😲😳😂 moment!)

TrishB Well that certainly piques your interest!! 3y

I‘m back home and discovered the post office did not hold our mail as we had asked. 😑 The up side? We were able to peel my books out of the PO Box, so now I have them a day sooner than I expected! 🥳 I‘ve really been enjoying #literati, especially since there are so many nonfiction picks and the discussions overall are good. Can‘t wait to get started on these, the tagged one first!

I loved this. Nichole is a Black woman in her 40‘s who wrote this bunch of essays that are candid and highly relatable. From dealing with abusive family relationships to power dynamics within relationships to frank sex talk, this was just great. There is a lot of pop culture critique in here that will stick with me (the name of her book comes from a Prince song), especially the part about Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog. Good stuff!!!

A fun and funny memoir-in-essays, Nichole shared stories of her life and sexuality. I thought I was getting a book about her life and pop culture, and there were three essays about that, however the majority of the book was about her sexual awakening and how much she likes receiving oral sex from men. I‘m guessing audible was not down for sharing exactly how sexual this book is. This was a good but not great for me. #BorrowNotBuy #audiobook

Megabooks The 💦🍑 on the cover should‘ve told me something was up! 😂 3y
Cortg I watched “Call Me by Your Name“ with my then high schoolers. They were somewhat tramatized and will forever think of the peach from the “peach scene.“ I did however go back and read the book to boot 😭 3y
Megabooks @Cortg I have not read that book nor seen the movie, but it has come on and off my TBR a number of times. 3y

Christine I saw her in conversation with Ashley C. Ford yesterday and she was so great! Your description makes me feel that the book is perhaps not 100% for me as well…but I‘m hoping that with some of the context from the book talk (that she sort of sees it as a life‘s work of hers to encourage people to do more of whatever makes them happy) I‘ll end up enjoying overall! 3y
Megabooks @Christine yes! She definitely talks about life happiness, but I was just a bit surprised with all the sex, but hey, if that‘s what makes her happy then cool. It was overall a lot more positive than many of the 102 other memoirs I‘ve read this year, including Ford‘s. I‘m not sorry I own it, mainly because it is so positive, and I feel so many memoirs focus more on negative events. Anyway, enjoy!! 3y
Christine Love that perspective re: positivity! 3y
