Beasts and Beauty
Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales | Soman Chainani
16 posts | 15 read | 18 to read
You think you know these stories, dont you? You are wrong. You dont know them at all. Twelve tales, twelve dangerous tales of mystery, magic, and rebellious hearts. Each twists like a spindle to reveal truths full of warning and triumph, truths that capture hearts long kept tame and set them free, truths that explore life . . . and death. A prince has a surprising awakening . . . A beauty fights like a beast . . . A boy refuses to become prey . . . A path to happiness is lost. . . . then found again. New York Times bestselling author Soman Chainani respins old stories into fresh fairy tales for a new era and creates a world like no other. These stories know you. They understand you. They reflect you. They are tales for our times. So read on, if you dare.

I wanted to like and enjoy these short stories. Only a few of the 10 did I enjoy; Little Mermaid being one. Sleeping Beauty was a hard pass. These were darker, yes, and got creative. Just wasn‘t long enough for me to feel invested in. If you‘re looking for a quick read to satisfy your craving, it may be more for you. I enjoy longer stories.

I've seen many mixed reviews on this. Any thoughts?

Bookwomble Not read it, so can't offer an opinion, but love the cover 🙂 1y
Roary47 Just finished this one last month. It is on the darker side of fairy tales. I would not read it to my 2, and 5 year old. My creepy, thriller, horror tastes liked it without nightmares. It can be graphic in some stores with the blood and gore, but not an over the top horror. Not all of them end in a typical happily ever after. Hope that helps. 💛 1y

4✨I did really enjoy this collection of short fairy tale stories. Some were better than others. It was darker stories so maybe not for little kids. There is graphic details to death and suffering. Still really good if you like fairy tale retellings. #roll100 @PuddleJumper

A subversive retelling of some of our most treasured fairy tales. Instead of victims, the women and girls in these stories use their cunning and wits to not only escape their fates, but flip the entire story on its head and really change their (and our) worlds. Timely and necessary. Marketed for middle school, but reads well for lovers of fairytales of any age.

I‘ve read a lot of fairy tales retold and reimagined, but nothing – nothing! – like this. Chainani completely disrupts the old tales and rewrites them ferociously for all those readers who never once saw themselves in those stories. Full review at http://itsallaboutthebook.org

I loved Chainani‘s take on some of the more popular fairytales. I especially appreciated how many of the female/damsel characters came to realize they didn‘t need a man to save them. The illustrations are gorgeous and the perfect compliment to each story. Full review: https://readingstewardess.wordpress.com/2021/09/23/book-review-beasts-and-beauty... #bookspinbingo

These definitely aren‘t the fairy tales you remember reading as a kid. Sure the title are the same—Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Peter Pan & more—but the tales…the tales are dark & twisted, told from different POVs, contrary, & a shout against the status quo. Characters are more complex, more human, their goals & desires more contradictory & little is as expected. The Little Mermaid story is excellent. This MG fairy tale retelling is on sale 9/28/21.
