What You Can See from Here
What You Can See from Here: A Novel | Mariana Leky
13 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
In this international bestseller by the award-winning novelist Mariana Leky, a heartwarming story unfolds about a small town, a grandmother whose dreams foretell a coming death, and the young woman forever changed by these losses and her loving, endearingly oddball community On a beautiful spring day, a small village in Western Germany wakes up to an omen: Selma has dreamed of an okapi. Someone is about to die. Luise, Selmas ten-year-old granddaughter, looks on as the predictable characters of her small world begin acting strangely. Protesting that they are not superstitious, each of the villagers grapples with the buried secrets and deferred decisions that have suddenly become urgent in the face of death. Luises mother struggles to decide whether to end her marriage. An old family friend, known only as the optician, tries to find the courage to tell Selma he loves her. Only Sad Marlies remains unchanged, still moping around her house and cooking terrible food. But when death finally comes, the circumstances are outside anyones expectations. Across three defining moments in her life, Luise grapples with life's big questions alongside her devoted friends, young and old. A story about the absurdity of life and death, a bittersweet portrait of village life and the wider world that beckons beyond, it is also a thoughtful meditation on the way loss and love shape not just a person, but a community. Mariana Leky's What You Can See from Here is a charmera moving novel of grief, first love, reluctant love, late love, and finding one's place in the world, even if that place is right where you started.

Yesterday I made my annual birthday day trip to one of my Favorite indie bookshops- Much Ado Books in Alfriston- and left with these three Beauties. I knew I wanted the Maupin as I started my love affair with Tales of the City there last year. The other two were hand sells. I couldn‘t resist the tagged book as I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a German book in translation and apparently is very funny. The Aoyama… how could I resist that title!!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Happy birthday! Looks like a great haul - many happy reading hours ahead 🥳 1y

My current audiobook! I‘m already halfway through and like it a lot, it is very intriguing! It‘s about Luise and her life in a small town with it‘s tragedies and interesting people. It‘s in a way calm and melancholic and beautiful. There is a dream-Okapi that predicts deaths, a huge dog called Alaska and a buddhist monk. I hope the book will continue to be this good🥰

When I was a child, primal scream therapy was in vogue. Sometimes, when Martin and I were passing through the neighboring village, piercing screams echoed from the House of Contemplation [a retreat centre] and the shutters of all the surrounding houses were closed tight.
Amused, Martin and I screamed back as loud as we could until the owner of one of the houses came out and said despairingly, "Please, not you, too."

An English teacher 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 A tale, a fable, and some bangin‘ good literature… 🔥 There‘s a fairy-tale, “other world”, almost pagan quality to this novel. A dash of Mysticism. A pinch of Magic. It feels something like a dream in places, but then realistic and down to earth in others. Symbolism is rampant in the forest, the river, and all the nature elements. Full review at Scrappymags.com

This is no ordinary novel. Translated from German, this mesmerizing story is not for those seeking action or thrills. It meandered along at its own delightful pace and captured my heart. Revolving around Luise and spanning 20 years, it touches on so much...love of small community at odds with wanting to let the world in, secret love, lost love, first love, love late in life, handling life and death with grace. I could honestly read this🔻

robinb over and over seeing hidden gems and different perspectives every time. So many beautiful, almost poetic passages with a cast that I could envision from my own hometown. Highly recommend. 5+/5⭐️ 4y

robinb @KarenUK @kspenmoll thank you both. If I hadn‘t been limited by space here (and didn‘t want to bore everyone 😂) I could have gone on and on. So much to talk about with this one. It would make a great book club read. (edited) 4y

Life in a small German village. A very charming story, if pretty darn sad.
