Sydney‘s story of how he grew up is heartbreaking. However, he begins to find his way around he seems to have lost his identity and the book rambles on quite a bit…. which makes it hard to follow.

I love all of Poitier‘s movies but did not love this book. Generally speaking, it is is a bit of an unfocused meander through his life. It‘s more of an ode to his parents and the notion that growing up in poverty with the freedom to explore on Cat Island made him the man he was. This was part of a selection of books at the library for Black History Month.
This inspiring book is billed as a “spiritual” memoir, where the dashing actor extraordinaire Sidney Poitier recounts childhood stories and life lessons that shaped his strong moral compass. He only chose film roles that would make his parents proud and honored the legacy of his family. He broke barriers and struggled for his artistic integrity, and I adore him even more after reading this. I‘ll be rewatching many of these movies this week.🥰
I salute all fathers trying to provide for their families. We appreciate what you do for us.
Was so excited about reading this book because of the review and the information but it is so hard to listen to that I couldn't even finish it

Sidney Poitier rose through the motion picture industry to become the first black actor to win the best actor Academy Award and the Screen Actor‘s Guild highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award, for an outstanding career and humanitarian accomplishment. #werise #aprella #tbr
Interesting and thought provoking memoir that‘s presented in an accessible and conversational style. Themes of family, class, race, character. It got a little woo woo at the end, but overall I enjoyed it very much. I‘ve also added several more #movies to my watch list! This fulfills #POCauthor for #Booked2018 as well as #celebritymemoir and #OprahBookClub for #ReadHarder challenges.
TFW you find out it‘s Sidney Poitier‘s birthday and his book is your #currentread and it‘s pretty good. Also, he grew up on Cat Island in the Bahamas. #dogsorcats #readingresolutions
#reccomendsday the belated version. I have passed this book along as it offered an experience I wanted to share. Sidney Poitier has written a thoughtful autobiography discussing his life experience and growth as a man. If you are not a classic movie buff , I also recommend , In the Heat of the Night and To Sir With Love.
