Amy is terrified. She hears scratching and scurrying noises coming from the dollhouse in the attic, and the dolls she was playing with are not where she left them. Dolls can't move by themselves, she tells herself. But every night when Amy goes up to check on the dollhouse, it's filled with an eerie light and the dolls have moved again! Are the dolls trying to tell her something? Could this all be connected to the murders of her great-grandparents? Sinister secrets unravel as Amy gets closer to revealing the mystery of the dolls in this haunting novel that combines complicated family relationships with a hair-raising mystery.

"I don't believe in ghosts."
- The Dollhouse Murders

The Dollhouse Murders was a book I borrowed from my school library when I was little and the story stuck with me for years. I was stoked when I came across a copy a few years ago at a mini book sale ? I liked the other books too and it would be nice to have a reread one day!

Twelve-year-old Amy is having difficulties at home caring for her sister, Louann. While visiting her Aunt at the old family home, she discovers an eerily-haunted dollhouse in the attic-an exact replica of the family home. Whenever she sees it, the dolls, representing her relatives, have moved. Her aunt won't listen to Amy's claims that the dolls are trying to tell her something.

This was a fairly well done creepy book. It's in the childrens section of the library but its older so probably closer to YA. The ending was great but I had a little trouble with the pacing. But I liked it overall.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I loved this book when I was a kid. Read it over and over! I bought a copy recently for nostalgia 😍 6y
thebookishtype15 A lot of people have been saying that! I hadn't read it before now but it was on my TBR for a couple of years. I'm happy I got to it 😊 6y

#BlackCatChallenge Day 29: Accdg to Fats‘ review: “For a children‘s book, I think The Dollhouse Murders did a pretty good job at concocting the elements of a #chilling murder mystery—an old mansion, a haunted dollhouse in the attic, a murder story to back it up, the dolls‘ re-enactment of the crime scene and ghosts making their presence known to humans.” Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hi

DGRachel I loved this so much in elementary school and I was surprised at how much came back to me when I reread it two years ago (edited) 6y

I did not recall as much of this book as I thought! Amy has a special needs sister and after a rough day, she takes off to spend time at her great grandparent's house with her aunt. After finding a huge dollhouse in the attic, which upsets her aunt, Amy and Louann are left to figure out who really murdered Amy's great grandparents. The ending was pretty flat but a good read nonetheless!

I read the covers off my copy of this as a kid and recently found it in the library! I was hoping to get through it tonight on my way to Brooklyn to see Gorillaz with @theresidentromantic! 😍

DGRachel I loved this as a kid and it was one of the few books I reread. I think I read it again last year or maybe the year before, just for nostalgias sake. I was surprised at how much I remembered 30 years later. 😊 6y

Heartwarming and creepy, this book teaches important lessons about acceptance of those who are different, and also deals with survivors guilt while unraveling a decades old murder mystery.

I haven‘t read this since I was a kid. I‘m about a third of the way through and it still holds up. I love that it started out with teens wearing windbreakers at the mall. So 80‘s!

I love finding stuff in books! I owned both of these books in my youth, but I thought I'd lost them so I bought used copies with the hopes of rereading them someday. Thanks to the #ThrowbackReadathon, that someday is today! I had to smile when I found these notes on the covers. Apparently I wasn't the only kid who had a system when it came to lending out books! 😊 Anyway, just finished The Dollhouse Murders. Next up: The Girl with the Silver Eyes.

I‘ve spent my first two hours listening to my audio book for the #24in48, so I could get some things done around the house. Now it‘s time to settle in a read this book for the #throwbackreadathon. I don‘t remember reading it as much as I remember having to draw a dollhouse in third grade to accompany our reading of the book.

monalyisha Aww man! I wish you still had the dollhouse drawing! 7y

This was a pretty great ghost story. The mystery behind the dolls moving was interesting & frightening in parts. I also liked the family subplot, particularly Amy having to realize that her mentally disabled sister can be independent. I‘m glad I read it leading up to Halloween!

I was an avid reader as a kid and fortunate to have a book-loving friend. We had a Saturday ritual: walk to the library, check out a load of books, hit the corner store for junk food, then go read our library books or swap some of the ones we owned. I'm still haunted by some of those #middlegradebooks we read! I've been hunting used bookstores for years in search of them. The Dollhouse Murders is one we read the summer of 1985. #FunFridayPhoto

DGRachel OMG! I LOVED that book. I'd completely forgotten about it. 8y

#Funfriday - a book I loved and read many times, and a book that gave me profound nightmares for years. I don't read much in the way of horror as an adult, but I am getting anxious and excited just remembering how terrified I was of this book, and how many times I went back to it for the adrenaline rush. Guess I was braver as a kid. 😱😀. Aaaagh! Just the cover is scary!
@Liberty

bookishkai Ooooh, I remember this book! I remember loving the creep factor (which is funny, because I keep telling myself I don't like horror books but I read a TON of horror as a kid) 8y
BekahB Yessss! I read this too! I was (and still am) a big ol' scaredy cat. However I loved being scared. My parents banned me from reading scary books at night because I'd have nightmares. Still, I would dare myself to read them late into the night with my flashlight. Now I have to ban myself from reading scary books at night so can sleep and get up for work. Sometimes I still can't help myself and do anyway! 🙀 8y
moranadatter I loved this one too! I'm pretty sure my copy had a purple spine. 8y

[DELETED] 2232195534 I volunteered for my daughter's elementary school librarian in the late 80's. She put a bunch of books in my hands and told me to read them. This was one of them, as well as Wait Till Helen Comes. So much fun to read, even though I was a Mom! 8y
ellareads I reread this one a lot too! I still have my copy, I should dig it out again! 8y
jetspins24 @bookishkris - thinking back, I read a lot of horror/murder mystery books as a kid, too. Weird that I shy away from that genre as and adult. Some favorites: 8y
