The Woman with the Blue Star
The Woman with the Blue Star: A Novel | Pam Jenoff
23 posts | 28 read | 15 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Girls of Paris comes a riveting tale of unfathomable sacrifice and unlikely friendship during World War II. 1942. Sadie Gault is eighteen and living with her parents amid the horrors of the Krakw Ghetto during World War II. When the Nazis liquidate the ghetto, Sadie and her pregnant mother are forced to seek refuge in the perilous sewers beneath the city. One day Sadie looks up through a grate and sees a girl about her own age buying flowers. Ella Stepanek is an affluent Polish girl living a life of relative ease with her stepmother, who has developed close alliances with the occupying Germans. Scorned by her friends and longing for her fianc, who has gone off to war, Ella wanders Krakw restlessly. While on an errand in the market, she catches a glimpse of something moving beneath a grate in the street. Upon closer inspection, she realizes its a girl hiding. Ella begins to aid Sadie and the two become close, but as the dangers of the war worsen, their lives are set on a collision course that will test them in the face of overwhelming odds. Inspired by harrowing true stories, The Woman with the Blue Star is an emotional testament to the power of friendship and the extraordinary strength of the human will to survive.

I read three Pam Jenoff books in less than a week in order to give a stack of HF‘s to a visiting sister. The friendship story here is beautiful even when the reality of taking refuge in the city sewers is horrific. It‘s my least favorite of the three only because it‘s an adult book that reads like YA. I always think there‘s something awkward in the conversations when a book straddles both lines.

First Pam Jenoff book, and it will not be the last! I picked this up to read for book club. It was a WWII story, which I have grown somewhat weary of, but it did have some interesting differences and a big twist at the end. #Kindle #ebook #audiobook #Libby

4⭐️ I enjoyed the book for the most part. There were a few times that I found it difficult to want to continue but due to it being a fairly easy read to focus on at the moment, I continued reading it. #2021 #historicalfiction #wwii #holocaust #fiction

I can‘t say enough about this book. I could have finished it in one sitting but there were places in it that were so nerve racking and heartbreaking that I had to take a break. That being said, I haven‘t stopped talking about since! Absolutely amazing!! All the hearts and stars I can give!! 💜⭐️💜⭐️

This is a historical fiction inspired by the true story of a small group of Jews who survived WWII by living in the sewers of Lviv, Poland. While life became more and more difficult for the people of Poland, it was much, much worse for the Jews who lived in the sewers. The constant horrendous smells, the disease-infested waters, the constant wet feet - all this is just unimaginable and a sign of their desperation to survive.

The Woman with the Blue Star is a must read for 2021, and beyond, as far as I am concerned. What an emotionally evocative novel of suffering, survival, and friendship! Every page took me deeper into a journey that had no clear happy endings but it was a journey that touched the heart of me. It was truly a significant story with a long lasting and deep impact!

I've read a lot of historical fiction books about WWII and how the Jewish people survived. This is one that I never would have imagined. Never! It's beyond belief what one race is capable of doing to another. It's amazing what a person can endure to survive. This book gives us a look at one of the worse I have read about yet. The conditions are horrendous. How they endured it is beyond belief. Yet it was based on an actual account.

SilversReviews LOVED this book even though it was heartbreaking. 4y
Lsmoore43 @SilversReviews Me too. One of the best I've read. Heartbreak and all.. 4y

Leaving your beautiful home, having to move to the ghetto, and then forced out of the ghetto into hiding in the city sewer system.

Could this get any worse for Sadie and her family?

You will be glued to the pages as you live the lives of the characters.  5/5
