25 posts | 48 read | 12 to read
Book 22 in the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet series from the New York Times bestselling author, Sue Grafton. Las Vegas, 1986. A young college graduate is murdered when he is unable to pay back a loan funded by notorious criminal Lorenzo Dante. Two years later private investigator Kinsey Millhone finds herself assisting to apprehend a shoplifter - Audrey Vance - in a shopping centre. Events take a much darker turn when Audrey's body is discovered beneath the Cold Spring Bridge, a local suicide spot. Unable to believe she took her own life, Audrey's fiance Marvin Striker hires Kinsey to investigate. It soon emerges that the shoplifter had become caught up in a much larger operation. Meanwhile Lorenzo Dante has begun to grow weary of his life in organised crime and frustrated with his violent and impulsive younger brother Cappi. While the police net begins to close in on him, Dante meets the beautiful Nora, who exerts a powerful pull over the gangster. As Kinsey's enquiries reach a dramatic head, it becomes clear that she and Dante have one thing in common - they must be careful who they trust...

It‘s a treat when you think you‘ve read a whole series, but discover there was one you missed. In this one Kinsey takes on a shoplifting ring. Love this series.

I usually enjoy these but this one was a miss for me. Too many different points of view in addition to Kinsey‘s: a gambler, a rich unhappy wife, a gangster, etc. The plot focuses on a shoplifting ring and I never felt invested. Too little of Kinsey and her personal life and friends.

Chapter 1 and I‘m bored — I really can‘t stand poker, casinos, and bookies... bring in Kinsey!

Update: Kinsey comes in in chapter 2 with a very detailed shoplifting episode... 🤦🏻‍♀️ Obviously this is not for me right now — I‘m so bored! Why, Kinsey, why?!? Bailed.

Zelma That is disappointing. Hopefully you can get through this one and enjoy the next few. 6y

📖 V is one of those great book letters: Vicious, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Velveteen Rabbit...
✒ Author was hard. Going with Virgil, because you've got to love some epics.
🎬 Veronica Mars
🍽 Vanilla ice cream and vegetables - not together, obviously.

The Alphabet Series happens in Santa Barbara lookalike, Santa Teresa. It‘s 1988 and PI Kinsey Millhone is trying to untangle an octopus-sized series of coincidences. Her biggest task is not getting caught in the tentacles. Grafton is skilled at creating suspense, although it‘s not too intense. Kinsey is mostly likable, with a dollop of cranky thrown in for good measure. Great palate cleanser!

It‘s time for some Kinsey and simpler times! I‘ve listened to almost all of them, and adore the narrator, Judy Kaye. She *is* Kinsey to me. And I also credit them for getting me into audiobooks, back in the early 1990‘s when I‘d “rent” the cassettes from a store sort of like Blockbuster. Oy...makes me feel terribly old.

Plus, I need to catch up so I can use “X” for #LitsyAtoZ.

AmyG I never knew you could rent audiobooks from blockbuster! 6y
Suzze My last one read is R. I remember those audio rental stores! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @AmyG It wasn‘t actually a Blockbuster store. Just the same concept, but for audiobooks. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Bookzombie I was thinking I‘d do the same thing. Kinsey and Me didn‘t get great reviews, but I still want to read it! 6y
Bookzombie @BarbaraTheBibliophage it‘s been on my TBR forever, but I want to give it a try. 🙂 6y

Do not remember having read this before (who knows how long ago it was?!), but a good read. It was sometimes hard to keep track of all the different characters when the narrator kept switching, but still very enthralling. (Yes, I finished this in a bubble bath - prime book-reading spot).

Some foreshadowing, perhaps, given the title? (Legitimate rhetorical question; I can't remember the plot of this).

I had a hard time deciding what to read next. On the one hand, I want to keep working at my operation declutter and not just read (or reread) books I know I'll keep. On the other hand, I have the "X" book in this series which would be a BRAND NEW READ, but I can't bring myself to read out of order... so without further ado, my next read! (Pictured here with tea and a now outdated mug ?).

This wasn't my favorite in the series, but it's a nice reminder of why I've been reading these books for so long. Kinsey is her sassy self and I like how she puzzled this out as well as the solution she found. I always appreciate Grafton trying something new, but I didn't love the alternating perspectives in this. At the same time the entire ending was pretty satisfying. Overall, this reminded me of how I'll miss this series and Ms. Grafton.

So here's the #MarchLineUp. I would have packed more in, but Don Quixote is going to be a big one, and I still don't know the next Eclectic Readers pick. Wish me luck!

jmtrivera @vkois88 Isn't that a cool cover? It's been on my TBR so long, I'm not sure how I heard of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the cover that attracted me first. 7y

I think I'm getting tired of this series. It was good but not great.

rubyslippersreads I love these books (though I have to catch up from R on), but I think I'd get tired of them if I read too many in a row. 8y
Krisjericho Yeah, I think I gave up around P. They just got repetitive. Maybe stretching a series for 26 volumes isn't the best idea. 😂 8y
EllanaRose @rubyslippersreads Oh yea, for sure, but if I start a series I have to complete it, you know? And @Krisjericho I hear you on that lol 8y
rubyslippersreads @EllanaRose @Krisjericho I'm actually happy there are 26 of them, but for a series that long, I can't read them all in a row. 😄 I think it was a great choice for #litsyatoz, though! (edited) 8y
EllanaRose I'm a huge fan of the Anita Blake books so I can read a long series but the internalised misogyny, and all the other types of prejudice is exhausting. But you're right, @rubyslippersreads on it being a great choice for #LitsyAtoZ, half the work is already done! 8y

I love this series! It's hard to find a long series that doesn't peter out and lose its way. Sue Grafton is a talented writer! I'm so sad I'm getting closer to the end of the alphabet.
