The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth
The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth | Norton Juster
18 posts | 29 read | 7 to read
The Phantom Tollbooth is a universally beloved childhood classic. In the 50 years since its original publication, millions of children have breathlessly followed Milo's adventures in the Lands Beyond. Now Leonard Marcus, a nationally acclaimed writer on children's literature, has created a richly annotated edition of this perennial favorite. Marcus's expansive annotations include interviews with the author and illustrator, illuminating excerpts from Juster's notes and drafts, cultural and literary commentary, and Marcus's own insights on the book. The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth also includes an introduction that shares the fascinating background on the book's publicationJuster and Feiffer met as young neighbors in Brooklyn, New York, and thus began a fortuitious collaboration on a project that would become an instant classicas well as its enduring place in the world of children's literature. The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth is the perfect way to honor a classic and will be welcomed by young readers and fans of all ages.

#WeRemember Day 13: Still my favourite #NortonJuster of all times, particularly this annotated edition by Leonard Marcus. “…many of the things which can never be, often are. You see,” he went on, “it‘s very much like your trying to reach Infinity. You know that it‘s there, but you just don‘t know where—but just because you can never reach it doesn‘t mean that it‘s not worth looking for.” My full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-4sr

Funny story: I went to go sell back this book at one bookstore and they said they couldn‘t buy it because it was going online for like $250. Go to a more specialized store and they say sorry, those are regular hardbacks, you have the library edition. I‘ll give you $10. Needless to say, I was disappointed but not surprised. I liked the book but it was too hard to keep my attention so I‘m not shocked it led me on this goose chase 🙃

Dodecahedron when Milo unthinkingly noted that numbers are not important:
“Could you have tea for two without the two—or three blind mice without the three? Would there be four corners of the earth if there weren‘t a four? And how would you sail the #SevenSeas without a seven?”
One of the most brilliant children‘s books out there. Amazing wordplay, amazing depth. The annotated version is even better!

Enjoying an evening in with a cup of tea, asmr Harry Potter rooms in the background and this quality book. The second half of work was absolutely insane and I definitely needed this. Just finished the introduction and finally get to start the story 🥰

Shaneyney The Phantom Tollbooth is one of my all time favorites. One I always try to get new friends to read. What is in the annotated version? 5y
Schnoebs @Shaneyney it has background on the author‘s life and also comments on all the pages about the reasons why they wrote things or different versions of things plus bits about the drawings 5y

Went to the Twin Cities Book Festival today and I found the tagged book for $10! And I was able to find a really cheap copy of aliebn which I wanted to buy for my sister for Christmas. Plus I got some book accessories which I‘m super excited for.

“Obviously you don‘t know who we are,” sneered the fifth. And they presented themselves one by one as:
“The Duke of Definition.”
“The Minister of Meaning.”
“The Earl of Essence.”
“The Count of Connotation.”
“The Undersecretary of Understanding.”

"You know you're in excellent hands when, in the midst of sine nutty, diadactic dialogue, the author disarms you."

Coming home from school one day, Milo finds an unexpected gift..a make-believe tollbooth. When he drives through it in his electric toy car, he is suddenly transported to the Lands Beyond, a fantastic world of imagination.

I wish I had read this as a kid, because I would have adored it. I really loved it even as an adult. It has the expected moral messages but they're so cleverly slotted in with little sayings that cracked me up at times.

Things which are equally bad are also equally good. Try to look at the bright side of things.
