A slick, smart thriller you don't want to miss.Samantha Downing, bestelling author of My Lovely Wife When her favorite true crime podcast host goes missing, an adrift young woman sets out to investigate and plunges headfirst into the wild backcountry of Northern California and her own dangerous obsession. Sera loves true crime podcasts. They give her a sense of control in a world where women just like her disappear daily. She's sure they are preparing her for something. So when Rachel, her favorite podcast host, goes missing, Sera knows it's time to act. Rachel has always taught her to trust her instincts. Sera follows the clues hidden in the episodes to an isolated ranch outside Rachel's small hometown to begin her search. She's convinced her investigation will make Rachel so proud. But the more Sera digs into this unfamiliar world, the more off things start to feel. Because Rachel is not the first woman to vanish from the ranch, and she won't be the last... Rachel did try to warn her.

Sera Fleece loves true crime podcasts, especially one by a host named Rachel Bard. Rachel's podcasts are about women & girls who go missing, & when Rachel suddenly goes silent, Sera thinks she has disappeared too. Sera uproots her life & heads off to where Rachel lived/lives but when she reaches the nearest town, Happy Camp, the locals are unfriendly & try to warn her off going to the ranch. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Rachel's parents, mother Addy & father Emmett, are strangely unconcerned about Rachel's whereabouts. They hire Sera to look after the horses & start getting the camp quarters into shape for summer visitors. In her free time & the evening, Sera tries to find out what happened to Rachel & why everyone is so tight-lipped about the women who have disappeared over the years. Can Sera find out what happened to Rachel before Sera disappears too? 2y
OutsmartYourShelf Oh dear. This could have been great - fan of crime podcast investigates the disappearance of the host. Instead we mostly get Sera mooching around the ranch & mooning after Jed (the stock Texas cowboy stereotype). In fact Sera is the main problem with this book, she is just really annoying. Her idea of investigation is just blurting questions out without actually thinking things through, 2y
OutsmartYourShelf & her insistence that she knows Rachel better than anyone else just because she listened to her true crime podcast is just weird & stalkerish. Also her knowledge that she really shouldn't trust anyone but she decides to trust Jed just because she's attracted to him. I kept reading, hoping it was going to suddenly pick up, but no - even the ending is unsatisfactory. Very disappointing. 1.5⭐

Omg omg omg this book 😶
This was an excellent audiobook that riffs on true crime and true crime podcasts, but is mostly about being in your 30s and lost. I loved this. So much. Fast paced and twisty.

rachelm Wow totally surprised at the low rating on here. It reads really well on audio, especially since it makes it almost podcasty, so if the premise sounds interesting, maybe check it out in that format. 3y

This gets zero stars.
Do not waste your time on this book. It quickly became a 4 in my mind as I trudged through "clues" that had holes in them the size of the grand canyon. Halfway through, I was starting to settle on a 3, but I was invested, so I stayed the course. By the last hundred pages, as things started to be "explained" (clear as mud, BTW), I was leaning towards 2.5...

Kris10H ...and then with a last sentence I had believed to just be a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter, I turned the page and saw...acknowledgements.
I would be embarrassed to be acknowledged in the making of this hodgepodge of a story.
I can't even.

I rarely DNF books but I did this one. I was only 30 pages in but it was feeling icky. I wasn‘t in the mood for icky. #DNF

Kris10H Be thankful you saved yourself the frustration. I rarely give bad reviews, but this book was a mess. 🙄 4y

A true crime podcast host goes missing and one of her listeners begins to investigate what happened. The listener, Rachel, ends up at an isolated ranch where the podcast host lived.

The writing was eh and the story was okay but the ending was too far fetched for me.

The writing style (first person, very short sentences) wasn't really my cup of tea but the ending was oddly satisfying to me, despite being the type of ending that usually infuriates me.

Book 4/5 for #FabulousFebruary

TheLibrarian Glad you didn‘t mind the ending. I wasn‘t a fan. 4y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
janeycanuck @TheLibrarian yeah, I‘m not sure why I liked it. Because I‘d normally throw a book across the room with that kind of ending... 4y

Even though I work from home and can‘t go anywhere, I still need to use up my vacation. This morning I decided to read in my library and of course Princess wanted to join. Here‘s to hoping my husband sleeps in so I can enjoy the peace and quiet a little longer.

This book was pretty amazing, and a really excellent twist on a True Crime themed thriller. I'm not going to reveal too much but I do love when the narrator finds themselves in an unreliable story.

Sera is a super fan of podcasts and when her favorite podcaster Rachel goes missing, Sera is determined to solve her disappearance. I found the storyline intriguing and was surprised by the ending. However, parts of this felt a little redundant and I had a hard time fully comprehending Sera's history and motives. Overall, I liked the mystery but doubted the plausibility of most of the plot. ⭐⭐⭐

FelinesAndFelonies Aw bummer. This was on my extensive TBR list. Maybe I'll hold off on buying it. 4y

Sera is obsessed with true crime podcasts, especially one called “Murder, She Spoke.” So when the host of the podcast, Rachel, goes missing, Sera takes it upon herself to find out what happened.

I loved the premise and was thoroughly immersed in the first half of the book, but unfortunately, some big plot holes and a very quick ending lowered my enjoyment. I also never really got a sense of who Sera is outside of her obsession with Rachel.

Librariana Sounds somewhat similar to another I've seen come up a few times: 4y
candority @Librariana Oh, I‘ve read Sadie but never thought about the similarities! 4y

If you read in front of your computer, does it count as work? 🤔

Suet624 I don't think so unfortunately. :)

LiteraryinPA The cover looks a lot like Wilder Girls, doesn‘t it? 4y
RebL Yes. Definitely!

Each semester I get a new group of interns whom I have to inform that very few people get paid to read. You can work around the books you love. You can touch them, you can arrange them, you can write about them. But reading happens on your own time.

TheNerdyProfessor @LiteraryinLititz you are so right! I didn't "see" it until you said it. I haven't read Wilder Girls but this one also has an outdoors, woodsy setting to it! 4y
TheNerdyProfessor @Tamra .... Too bad I'm working at home and all my pet co-workers know for sure that I'm not working 😂 4y
TheNerdyProfessor @RebL a little tough love but so true! I should have picked a job where I get paid to read. 4y

Eliza Jane Brazier‘s debut is the latest suspense release based around true crime podcasting. This was a quick read with what‘s apparently a bit of a polarizing end 😮

This was also a DNF. The beginning was slow and the main character was creepy and annoying.

Ultimately this just didn't do it for me. It was definitely ok but I just didn't engage with the characters. The cover is appealing.

Sera is obsessed with a true crime podcast about women who disappear. When the author of the podcast herself disappears, Sera goes to try and find her. A bit like a stalker.
