Difficult Women
Difficult Women | Roxane Gay
Award-winning author and powerhouse talent Roxane Gay burst onto the scene with "An Untamed State" and the "New York Times" bestselling essay collection "Bad Feminist" (Harper Perennial). Gay returns with "Difficult Women," a collection of stories of rare force and beauty, of hardscrabble lives, passionate loves, and quirky and vexed human connection. The women in these stories live lives of privilege and of poverty, are in marriages both loving and haunted by past crimes or emotional blackmail. A pair of sisters, grown now, have been inseparable ever since they were abducted together as children, and must negotiate the elder sister's marriage. A woman married to a twin pretends not to realize when her husband and his brother impersonate each other. A stripper putting herself through college fends off the advances of an overzealous customer. A black engineer moves to Upper Michigan for a job and faces the malign curiosity of her colleagues and the difficulty of leaving her past behind. From a girls fight club to a wealthy subdivision in Florida where neighbors conform, compete, and spy on each other, Gay delivers a wry, beautiful, haunting vision of modern America reminiscent of Merritt Tierce, Jamie Quatro, and Miranda July."

I love Roxane Gay and her writing. I thought this was a really interesting and diverse collection of short stories. She really captures a lot about being a woman and so much heart behind so many different scenarios of being a woman. I didn‘t love all the stories, but most of them really sucked me in and kept my interest. This is a darker book, but definitely worth reading!

Completed this anthology of short stories, cuddled with our dog, while it was snowing outside (first snow of the season). TW- sexual assault, domestic abuse.
All the stories feature ‘difficult women‘ but shows how they became or why they are difficult. The protagonists come from various backgrounds; the stories vary in length & genres showing Gay‘s brilliance. I can say that every reader will finds parts of themselves in at least one story

A collection of short stories about, well, difficult women and the lives they lead. Some are truly disturbing and others sadly seem like the average woman‘s life. I‘m glad I‘m reading this but it is a bit depressing, especially in this year when everything is going wrong already. As always, though, Roxane Gay is a phenomenal author.

I DEVOURED my reread of this book. So glad to have a physical copy again. Baby Arm is an all-time favorite short story. The last three stories in the collection are long and my least favorites, so I‘m always left with an aftertaste, but the preceding 18 are so great, I have to give this 4.5⭐️

Excited for the Feminist Book Club Box discussion later this month.

BarbaraBB That sounds good. And you have those gorgeous Persephones waiting for you of course! 🤍 4y

Really long day already, but my Feminist Book Club Box came! 🎉🥳📚 I have a hardcover copy of DW in storage, but I‘m glad to have it back in my collection for now. Also very excited for the discussion with Roxane!

There‘s a cute calendar, chocolate-covered hazelnuts, grapefruit-scented soap, and this gorgeous green and gold washi tape, too. I‘m glad to be supporting small businesses with some of my book-buying 💵.

BarbaraBB What a wonderful package! Enjoy... and get some sleep 💚 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thank you friend! I did sleep. Parents are driving me batty! (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB Because of current politics or just because 😏? Take care! 4y
See All 14 Comments
Megabooks @BarbaraBB no, not politics. Dad is just not thinking clearly or trying anymore. It‘s just really hard. I‘ve been in a lot of pain. (I‘m fighting tears due to pain now, and I can barely sleep.) mom gets over upset about it all, so I‘m the only voice of reason. Tbh, I‘m just exhausted. Sorry I just unloaded all that. 💜 4y
Cinfhen Ugh, your family situation doesn‘t sound healthy for you anymore, Meg. You‘re a wonderful daughter but you need to start taking care of yourself too. Do your parents have siblings that you can speak with? I‘m worried that your dad needs more care than you can or should be responsible for. I‘m thinking of you xxx #loveacrossthemiles 4y
Cinfhen Oh and the book box looks amazing 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks, the book box was a bright spot today. My family situation is hard. My mom is panicked. My dad is and isn‘t the same person he used to be. There‘s no family to step in. We do have a lot of church members that have been helpful, but we generally only ask when things get terrible. Plus my two closest irl friends have their own issues. One is a single mom following her husband‘s suicide and the other is going through an ⬇️ 4y
BarbaraBB I am with Cindy, Meg. You can‘t bear all this responsibility by yourself. It is too much, you are too close, and you need time and space for yourself. I know it‘s none of my business and please correct me if I‘m crossing a line but I wish you have (professional) people nearby who you can reach out to sometimes to take over the care for your dad 🤍🤍 4y
Megabooks Acrimonious divorce. I‘m trying to support them as they have me in the past but with the pandemic and my own problems, the well is empty. My therapist suggested a short vacation, but I‘m unsure if my mom can handle it. The pandemic has just made things worse as far as in person support as well. That‘s my story... @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen (edited) 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I do have a therapist, which is helpful, but her suggestions seem to big. We have an aide for dad, but he is unreliable. We have a maid that comes for a few hours twice a week. I don‘t know what we‘d do without her. She‘s been with us for 30 years. 4y
BarbaraBB It‘s a hard story. I can understand a vacation sounds a bit far fetched and impossible right now. And your friends, the aide and COVID don‘t make it any easier for you. I‘m of no help, I wish you could escape it all for a few hours or days to energize and to take care of yourself. Please know you can always email me! 4y
Cinfhen I‘m happy you have outside resources to help alleviate some of the burden but I‘m still concerned about you. Maybe now is the time to reach out to your pastor or church friends and seek some guidance. I know the pandemic SUCKS!!!!! It‘s really infringing on situations making them harder and 100 times more complicated. A little break is a nice idea but it‘s only a bandaid - you need a bigger plan. I‘m sorry if I sound too opinionated 👇🏽 4y
Cinfhen But this is how I would talk to my close friends and people I genuinely care for. I wish I could offer you more, but I‘m here as a sounding board or anything else. You‘re not alone, Meg. XX 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen thank you both for being such fantastic friends. Its really wonderful to have people to talk to in the lonely hours at night. It‘s hard for me to reach out for help, but I am close to breaking. I lie awake at night in pain and worried. I really just need a vacation. I need my own space. I need to talk to my therapist more often. I feel smothered. I don‘t mean to worry you. I‘ve survived a lot already. 💜 I can do it somehow. (edited) 4y

Two book-related services I‘ve signed-up for this year are MyTBR ( on the recommendation of @MallenNC ) & Roxane Gay‘s newsletter, The Audacity.

I‘m excited to see which books my bibliologist selects for me — & Roxane Gay is insightful, passionate, eloquent, & witty...so I‘ve no doubt the latter was a sound purchase.

This was not an easy read because many of the stories dealt with rape and sexual abuse and they did not hold back, but they were so well written and evocative. These are not bedtime stories, but they are important and should be heard. The last one made me weep.

The writing in this collection is achingly beautiful. The stories oscillating between gritty realism and abstract surrealism. This read takes time though, the stories are heavy (dealing with sexual violence, abuse, and grief) and the reader needs some time to digest and recover. While a difficult read, Difficult Women is well worth it.

Filled with flawed and imperfect women, Roxane Gay's short story collection makes readers face up to what society considers a difficult woman. Tw: sexual assault, rape, violence, pedophilia. It's not easy to read these, but anyone familiar with her work knows that already. Definitely a collection that makes you think. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have so many feelings about this book I don‘t even know where to start. 10/10, I‘m Amazon priming a copy ASAP bc I need to be able to read this over and over.

Constance Grady, writing for Vox, says it better than I can: “Taken together, the stories celebrate the condition of being difficult in the face of a world that is determined to hurt you. Because it is only the dead girls, Gay concludes in the title story, who are never called difficult.”

This is a powerful collection of stories/portraits of women. They are raw and candid and Roxane Gay doesn‘t mince words or avert her eyes. Women shouldn‘t have to hide the things that happen to them, and I feel like this collection helps bring them into the light. #LitsyAtoZ

Quite disappointing. I loved her novel & recent memoir. But this collection fell really flat. I‘ve always hated when a 2-3 page piece is called a ‘short story‘ — no, that‘s an anecdote, a scene. Not a story. Way too many super short pieces that said nothing. Some cliched characters, few that were unique. Also TOO MUCH SEX I know it‘s different for me being ace, but still, good lord. A few stories were strong but mostly this was a big miss. 2/5 ⭐️

I really liked this #newyearwhodis pick. Gay can make worlds and characters feel real in only a few pages, and some of her imagery is incredibly striking. A lot of the themes and language got repetitive though and I ended up not loving it as much as I thought I was going to. I also don't know if I'll be in a rush to read her other fiction, I'm not sure I could stomach the violence in long form.

@monalyisha

monalyisha I can understand your hesitancy! Its rough...but I loved so many of the stories. Maybe knowing about her life (via “Bad Feminist” & “Hunger”) helped me to accept & understand the thematic repetition. 6y
