Water Princess | Susan Verde, Georgie Badiel

Based on supermodel Georgie Badiel's childhood, a young girl dreams of bringing clean drinking water to her African village With its wide sky and warm earth, Princess Gie Gie's kingdom is a beautiful land. But clean drinking water is scarce in her small African village. And try as she might, Gie Gie cannot bring the water closer; she cannot make it run clearer. Every morning, she rises before the sun to make the long journey to the well. Instead of a crown, she wears a heavy pot on her head to collect the water. After the voyage home, after boiling the water to drink and clean with, Gie Gie thinks of the trip that tomorrow will bring. And she dreams. She dreams of a day when her village will have cool, crystal-clear water of its own. Inspired by the childhood of African-born model Georgie Badiel, acclaimed author Susan Verde and award-winning author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds have come together to tell this moving story. As a child in Burkina Faso, Georgie and the other girls in her village had to walk for miles each day to collect water. This vibrant, engaging picture book sheds light on this struggle that continues all over the world today, instilling hope for a future when all children will have access to clean drinking water.

Our read aloud yesterday in class. Good beginning story for children to understand the scarcity of readily available clean water for so many people. #readingafrica2022 #burkinafaso

Look, I know I joked about “cheating” on #readingafrica2022 by reading as many children‘s books as I could, but they have been some of the best books! This one has gorgeous art, a simple, but powerful story, and an important message. I actually want to buy a copy for my own bookshelves and I have no children in my life! #burkinafaso

Librarybelle That is gorgeous! 3y
BarbaraBB Wow that is great. I need to get my hand on this one too! Stacking! 3y

It has been AGES since I set foot in my library branch. It closed for renovations shortly before the pandemic lockdown started. Today, I successfully navigated a redirected parking lot, found the holds shelf (and my three books for #ReadingAfrica2022), and figured out the new, fancy self-checkout!

DrexEdit I have Aya on hold also for #ReadingAfrica2022. I will be interested to hear your thoughts. It looks like a good read! 3y

“The Water Princess” by Susan Verde, Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. This impactful NF B story was inspired by African-born model named Georgie Badiel. In Gie Gie‘s small African village she doesn‘t have running water, so she walks with her mother to a far well. The water isn‘t clear, carrying a pot on her head isn‘t easy, and the walk is a far distance. Gie Gie hopes that one day she will be able to have access to clean water. #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef I would use this story as a RA in the classroom and discuss the struggles that other children have around the world. UDL principle 2.4 Promote understanding across languages. ESOL strategy 22 gives enough wait time for second language learners to respond to ques. Throughout discussions and questions from the RA, EL students will be given extra time to answer and students may put themselves in Gie Gie‘s spot to understand what she‘s going through. 4y
Viviannef This Resource is from Susan Verde‘s website, she created a small activity for students. The activity allows students to put themselves in Gie Gie‘s position as she walks with a pot on her head. Students express how it makes them feel and what they will use the water for. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/585a7978be659475691d30d0/t/5953edfdff7c50...

Viviannef This next resource I wanted to add because it‘s a great lesson plan that teachers can use regarding this book. Includes before, during, and after reading activities for students. https://westonwoods.scholastic.com/products/westonwoods/study_guides/2985-Water-...

ashleyshugars Vivianne, I have never heard of this book, but I would love to incorporate this into my future classroom! I noticed your resource was super cute and a great idea to get students thinking about the real world! (edited) 4y
Viviannef Of course Apryl! Really does raise awareness to students about the conditions of other parts of the world. 4y
Viviannef Yes Ashley! It‘s such a beautifully told book! It will open students minds to the conditions that other children are living through. 4y
DrSpalding I think you said this is your favorite author. What a beautiful book to provide possibly a mirror but certainly a window to the world. Excellent book choice you have read quality books and should strive to add these to your classroom library. 4y

Written by Susan Verde. Theme: Equal rights. This Nonfiction, Picture book is great for classroom discussion and read-aloud. It Is based on Georgia Badiel's childhood story. It teaches children how precious water is and that families in another part of the world struggle to have it. This book was created as a means of raising awareness that we all have the fundamental right to clean water and an education.

The wonderful, touching story of a girl and her mother traveling far just to get water. Something we take for granted that other people have to spend whole days to get. A great book showing a different culture and way of life.

The Water Princess by Susan Verde (biography, published 2016) is a touching story about Georgie- GiGi- Badiel‘s childhood is amazing. It is also a touching book with words and sentence structure for younger children. The story tells of the process it takes for them to get just water that they must carry long distances and still boil. A long journey each day to get a necessity for life. Touching and shows the hardships people face that we don't.

#OctoberPutASpellOnYou Day 27: This is the story of Georgie Badiel, a supermodel currently living and working in NYC and was Miss Africa in 2004. Here, she was portrayed as an ordinary child who sometimes resents doing chores such as waking up so early in the morning to walk all through the desert to get water from the well with her mother. She is indeed the water princess whose kingdom is desert and #Dust. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-ejA

Beautiful story in all respects, excellent for kid conversation. The illustrations are by Peter Reynolds, of The Dot, etc. 🤗My daughter suggested we fill up a jug of water & send it to Gie Gie. 😘

Beautiful and moving. For adults, the book is a reminder that there are places that have no access to clean water. For kids it's a great way to start a conversation about how we can help.
