Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls
Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls: Facsimile Edition | Betty Crocker Editors
10 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Betty Crocker's classic cookbook for children is back-in an authentic reproduction of the original 1957 edition A whole generation of Baby Boomers grew up with Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls, and they have helped to make it the one of the most requested titles in the Betty Crocker archives. Now back by popular demand, this timeless favorite stands ready to capture the hearts of a new generation of budding cooks. Packed with recipes that are just as popular with kids today as they were 45 years ago, it shows how to make everything from Ice Cream Cone Cakes and Pigs in Blankets to Cheese Dreams and Sloppy Joes. The small format, easy recipes, charming color illustrations and photographs, and even the cover, are all the same as they were in the 1957 edition-and just as delightful as ever. The only innovation is the concealed wire binding that lies flat for easy cooking while being sturdy enough to withstand energetic handling by kids in the kitchen. It's the ideal book to give or to keep, for retro appeal, and for getting today's kids started in the kitchen.

lynneamch Oh yes! This is the one I have, too. Will have to get it out for the grandkids. 7yr-old grandson had his first cooking class last week. They made Glazed Salmon with rice. Sounds better to me than the old Porcupine Meatballs with made with tomato soup. 😉 5y
mrp27 @lynneamch That's awesome! I love the idea of getting the kids in the kitchen early. This was actually my moms book from childhood that she gave me, that's why it's a favorite. 5y

This was my very first cookbook my mom bought me when I was little. It‘s always been my favorite because of that but also has my favorite apple crisp recipe that I still use.

AshleyHoss820 I did not realize I would come to Litsy today to be hit so hard by nostalgia! We had this too, but I completely forgot about it until I saw your post!! THANK YOU!!! 😊❤️ 6y
Chasing_Pages @AshleyHoss820 I‘m so glad I could help you remember something I hope are fond memories like mine. It‘s pretty impressive that I still have it and it‘s held up well through the years. 6y

I've been MIA for a while now for a lot of reasons, but I thought I'd share today's book haul. The Betty Crocker was my first cookbook. I'm indulging in some nostalgia.

And thanks to Nick Offerman's Gumption, and The Botany of Desire, I'm on a Michael Pollan kick.

@Hobbinol asked to see some recipes from this cookbook. Here's an idea for your next dinner party ... "It's better than a real candle, because you can eat it". ?

KCorter It's real?! I totally thought May made that up in 7y
Moray_Reads They're not a recipe, it's a banana, a pineapple ring and a cherry! And judging by how it looks it should really be in 7y
Hobbinol 😂😂😂What no melon balls?! I make my banana candles with melon balls... 7y
vivastory 😂 😂 7y
JSW This is .... borderline risqué. ?? 7y
Cinfhen That illustration 🙀🙀😹😹 7y
Zelma I'm pretty sure this "recipe" includes whipped cream in the famed cookbook Be Bold With Bananas. 7y
BookishBeth Is there a recipe for pear mice in there? 7y
lynneamch This is hilarious! Not so amusing is the p.91 suggestion for makiing "Old Black Joe" by putting "Prune on Wheaties, bits of apple for eyes, mouth, ears . . ." Yikes! 7y
lynneamch Yours might be a different version. My cover looks like the tagged one. 7y
respekt1111 Oh dear😂 7y
LeahBergen @KCorter Is this made in that novel?! I haven't read it. 7y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads 😂 That Nanny Ogg looks good (I haven't read any Pratchett ). 7y
LeahBergen @Hobbinol I just KNEW you'd class up the presentation a bit before serving. 😂 7y
LeahBergen @Zelma Oh my! 😂 7y
LeahBergen @BookishBeth I just checked and it's called "Bunny Salad" (half a pear made to look like a rabbit with little blanched almonds for ears). 7y
KCorter @LeahBergen It is! My book club had way too much fun making lewd comments in our discussion afterwards. I blame the all the wine involved. 😅 7y
kylienoele I have this cookbook!! I remember looking at all the pictures 😂 7y
LeahBergen @lynneamch Same page number in mine but he is called "Old Hobo Joe". ? Right next to him is one called "Fatso". Is that one in your edition? 7y
LeahBergen @KCorter I'm surprised no one made it for your meeting! 😂 7y
LeahBergen @kylienoele It's hilarious! 😄 7y
LibrarianRyan Hummmmmmm. 👍🏻🤓😂 7y
KCorter @leahbergen That definitely came up during the discussion. 😉 Though we did make a chocolate pie (minus the secret ingredient) for the discussion of 7y
LeahBergen @KCorter Awesome! 😂 7y
DebinHawaii I have this book too-so many memories... (nightmares?) 😱😱😱 7y
lynneamch Oh my, yes. Any idea what "Little Man Who Wasn't There" represents? Looks like a sombrero. 7y
BookishBeth I must have had that book when I was a child. My sister and I made my parents dinner for their 13th anniversary. 7y

Here's a kid's cookbook even older than those posted by rachelm and susanw
Given to me in the 1950s and now falling apart.
Some books you just have to keep forever. #cookbooklove

This book got lots of use on Saturday night sleepovers. See kids, before computers and video games, we cooked a batch of cookies or brownies with friends, then we ate them!! #cookbooklove #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

This book has been splashed and splattered for too many years. My Fun Friday copy is tattered and torn but much loved

SusanInTiburon I love this book too!! (Look at that: 1/2 tsp basil ... 😆) 8y
bookishkai I learned to cook using a yard sale copy of this that my mom got when I was maybe seven? My dad helped with my first endeavor, when he was sure that 1 clove of garlic meant the entire head of garlic. I was seven, what did I know from garlic cloves. 8y
Dragon Thanks @SusanInTiburon and @bookishkris so many childhood memories revolve around cooking and cookbooks 💜 8y

#FunFridayPhoto. I earned my Girl Scout cooking badge with recipes out of my beloved 1960s Betty Crocker children's cookbook. Bunny Salad wasn't half bad! (But the less said about the too-suggestive "Rocket Salad," the better.)

BarbaraTheBibliophage I remember "Bunny Salad!" 8y
Hugoreads I had this book too and I thought the Bunny Salad was so fancy! 8y
Dragon I have this book and I still make the spaghetti recipe💜 8y

#FunPhotoFriday I loved to death my 1960s edition of Betty Crocker's children's cookbook. I had this very cake for my 10th birthday. I cried with joy.

SharonGoforth Yes!!! We had that cookbook, too! 8y
LitHousewife You should have cried. That cake is fantastic. I bet your mom was proud. 😊 8y
Britafish Amazing. This looks like a My Little Pony castle. 8y
