In some ways I was hesitant to read this, partly because Gaudy Night was SO GOOD and I was worried this wouldn‘t measure up, and partly because this is the last book and I don‘t want the series to be over. I needn‘t have worried about it not measuring up. Sayers manages to weave together and balance the Harriet & Peter bits with the mystery bits perfectly. And the ending hit me hard—instead of solving the crime and wrapping it up nice and pat⤵️

There are certain books that simply must be read with a mug of tea. Even if it was 81F today.

A delightful culmination of the Harriet Vane (mystery writer) and Lord Peter Wimsey (amateur detective) romance, plus, a new mystery to solve. Peter and Harriet are unfortunate enough to find, in the cellar of the house they've just bought, the previous owner's dead body. Half the story is fun stuff about their new marriage, plus the story continues after the murderer is caught and touches upon Peter's PTSD from WWI and how he and Bunter met.

Loved this every bit as much as I did on my first read. I MUST read the book I just got from the library but after that I doubt I'll be able to resist reading Thrones, Dominations.

I had a feeling that once I read one Dorothy Sayers I wouldn't be able to tear myself away I was right. I'm halfway through this one and loving it. I hereby promise myself that I really will finish reading The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo very soon but for now I'm going to continue wallowing in Sayers' precision of language.

Delicious, and Lord Peter is narrated by Ian Carmichael, but it is not “unabridged.” I know exactly what Lord Peter said to Harriet on the wedding night, and it‘s not included. The production is on the Libby app and at Internet Archive.

Definitely had the desire to see how it ends but sorry it had to be over. That was the last of the series. I have read all the books with Harriet. Superb.

I love this book, read it several times now. A subtle portrayal of complex characters, makes detective fiction ‘literary fiction ‘.

I can't read in my office without this little face popping up. "Whatcha reading???"

I must confess that my idea of romance heavily features reading bits of this book aloud to my wife. I read her the forward with the letters/diary entries practically in its entirety. (Lucky me, she loves that too.)

The #jubilantjuly prompt for today is workaholics and if solving crime on your honeymoon doesn't count for that, I don't know what does.

I adored Gaudy Night, and while I've yet to read this follow-up, it's nice to know those two finally got together (and no, that's not an invitation for spoilers, thank you very much).

This was my May reading! I finished my syllabus for my upcoming Oxford class, hence the heavy English mystery slant to the reading. I loved all the Dorothy Sayers mysteries, Days Without End, Hope in The Dark, The Wonder Woman graphic novels. I enjoyed Commonwealth, Girls On Fire, Slouching Toward Bethlehem, High Dive, Book of Life, Dead Letters, Clancy of Queens, and How to be a Tudor. Meh on the rest. Two Serious Ladies was not for me.

I didn't think I could love a romantic couple more than I loved Claire & Jamie Frasier from Outlander but man, Dorothy Sayers has delivered such deep, complex & rich ADULTS in the form of Harriet Vane & Lord Peter Wimsey that I am blown away. Look, it's easy to fall in love when you are young & free. It is much harder when you are older, with more baggage, mistakes, regrets & fears. This is the last of their 4 book arc. It's so witty and smart!!

"Letting your affection corrupt your judgment. What kind of life could we have if I knew you had become less than yourself by marrying me?"

These books have been in my TBR pile for several years and I'm so glad I finally got to them. These are two characters who are equally matched and I loved seeing them work together and figure out how to be together.
