Det var så den vinter
Det var så den vinter | Dorthe Nors
26 posts | 21 read | 44 to read

Two innovative novellas… one written in headlines alone, one written as a series of lists, both about women who have recently been left broken-hearted and are coping with 21st century breakups. I found both really compelling…. My only reservation is that both formats somehow kept me at a distance, and felt a little cold. Really creative and unique though…. #weathertermintitle #booked2022 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae

Cinfhen This sounds fun!! Hooray for another #Booked2022 prompt 😄 2y

Made a note to myself: there‘s the reality that the others keep an eye on, and next to it is my own.

Two novellas in lists so it was interesting but didn‘t pack the punch of her earlier short story collection (Karate Chop) for me.

This is so great; read it through twice. It's got a strange narrative structure but it's somehow still so emotive, especially the first story. #ReadingWomenMonth

batsy I've read excerpts of her work and it sounds so intriguing. 7y

Translated from the Danish by Misha Hoekstra
Graywolf Press, 2016

This one looks interesting for #AprilBookShowers #womenintranslation
She is the first Dane ever to have a piece of fiction published in the New Yorker.
This contains two novellas, "both of which chronicle the aftermath of two twenty-first century romances with humor and empathy."
Has anyone read it?

Kalalalatja I have read it in Danish, and I liked it quite a bit. It is weird and kinda experimental, but beautiful too! 8y

This book is two novellas written in a series of headlines and lists. This could have been too precious and edgy but the juxtaposition of banal details with sharply delineated observations acutely describes the interior monologue of the mc. The author/ narrator has something to say about modern life so substance is not sacrificed for style but enhanced by it. Does not seem self indulgent like some formally experimental texts do.

Desha This one is on its way in my #bookmail â˜ºï¸ Sounds like it might be good! ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ˜Š 8y

This was a funny, weird little book. It consists of two novellas - one of them I liked a lot and the other I sort of liked. But overall it is a pick for me. Both novellas are written like lists or like poetry. But especially "Minna needs a practice space" has a bit more plot, and I felt more connected to this, than I did to "Days".

I-read-and-eat Beautiful photo! I am also very curious about this book 😀 8y
Kalalalatja @I-read-and-eat it is a bit weird but I quite enjoyed it 😃 it is a good cross over of fiction and poetry 👠8y

This is a collection of two novellas by Danish author, Dorthe Nors. In the first one "Days" we meet a woman who is heartbroken. It is written in lists! In the second novella "Minna needs a practice space" we meet Minna. It is written sort of like prose poetry.

It is my first time reading something sort of "experimental" like this, but so far I am enjoying it.

I-read-and-eat Amazing photo! I would love to learn how to read Danish. I am Dutch and I can 'almost' read it 😂 Any easy written Danish books you'd recommand? My 2017 goal is to master reading a new language and I think Danish might be the one. 8y
Kalalalatja @I-read-and-eat uh that's tough! I have heard that Dutch and Danish are a little a like, but I don't think I could read a whole book in Dutch ? most of the books I read are in English, but if I should recommend something I would maybe pick a crime/mystery novel by a Danish author like Jussi Adler-Olsen or Sara Blædel ? 8y
Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads it has been translated to English if you want to give it a go 👌 8y
I-read-and-eat @Kalalalatja I hope my background in linguistics might help, and a dictionary of course 😉 Danish just seems like such a great language! 8y

It is my birthday next week, so my dad and little brother came on a visit today (we live in different towns). And look! They brought books 😄📚 I am a sucker for birthdays and presents, so I was very happy.

Interesting idea for a story. Not sure how successful it was though. But it was interesting to read something out of the norm.

"Minna's working on a paper sonata.
The paper sonata consists of tonal rows.
Minna writes soundless music.
Minna is a tad avant-garde."
