Or What You Will
Or What You Will | Jo Walton
16 posts | 5 read | 23 to read
Or What You Will is an utterly original novel about how stories are brought forth from Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author Jo Walton. He has been too many things to count. He has been a dragon with a boy on his back. He has been a scholar, a warrior, a lover, and a thief. He has been dream and dreamer. He has been a god. But he is in fact nothing more than a spark of idea, a character in the mind of Sylvia Harrison, 73, award-winning author of thirty novels over forty years. He has played a part in most of those novels, and in the recesses of her mind, Sylvia has conversed with him for years. But Sylvia won't live forever, any more than any human does. And he's trapped inside her cave of bone, her hollow of skull. When she dies, so will he. Now Sylvia is starting a new novel, a fantasy for adult readers, set in Thalia, the Florence-resembling imaginary city that was the setting for a successful YA trilogy she published decades before. Of course he's got a part in it. But he also has a notion. He thinks he knows how he and Sylvia can step off the wheel of mortality altogether. All he has to do is convince her. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I went to see Ada Palmer and Jo Walton talk yesterday and it was so interesting, they both love history and writing and are real time friends.
If you get a chance to see they talk, don't miss it.
Now I need to listen to their podcast too ;)

If a change is coming, it may be good for those who have been suffering with things the way they are, and bad for those who have prospered.

Stats time! I read a ton in February because a bunch of the comics on my holds list made it through processing. Whee!

I had a high-quality month, too. I only found one 5-star read (tagged) and two 4.5ers (THE LONELY HEARTS HOTEL and BUTTER HONEY PIG BREAD), but I regular-strength loved an awful lot of what I read. It felt pretty durned good to take my yearly month off from Americans, too.

This book, y‘all.

I mean, damn.

It‘s about death and creation and how we interact with stories. It‘s a novel within a novel, except for how it isn‘t. I want to dissect every little piece of it in a 6000-word review, but I also want to keep my response safe in my own skull, because this feels at once expansive and personal. I hardly know what to do with it.

It‘s a 5-star read, is what I‘m saying.

I started OR WHAT YOU WILL over breakfast, and it feels like a book I could love. I sure hope it pans out. My last two maybe-promising reads went downhill, but Walton usually trends upwards.

GypsyKat Ohhh I just added this to my list yesterday! I hope you enjoy it! 4y

There is an audience out there for this book, but I am not part of it. The writing is good, but the approach is awkward & confusing. It nearly put me in a reading slump. It is a dense read requiring a slow, pensive read. It is very stream of consciousness & highly meta. For those who love Shakespeare & can handle the wandering approach this will be an enjoyable read. Walton does have talent in her writing & her prose is quite lyrically beautiful.

Just recently Roxas decided that I am not allowed to read out on my balcony without him! 😻 I never used to let him out here because he's such a spaz and I was afraid he would jump off the edge! 😹 But he doesn't go near the edge at all, in fact, all he seems interested in doing out here is sharing my chair with me while reading! So I guess now I have a balcony book buddy! 🤗📚💕 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #roxas

So I don't know if other people have experienced this or if it's just me...but I feel like the pandemic has made my social anxiety way worse. 😞 I went to a coworkers house today for a staff pool party and I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown the whole time! 😣 It feels harder to be around other people now somehow? In any case, thank goodness I had a book with me! Technically two books, as I had one also hidden in my bag! 😂🤣💕📚🙈

jen_the_scribe It's made mine way worse as well. We went to a dinner with neighbors a few weeks back, there were only 8 of us there, and I just wanted to go home. And going to get groceries is a huge mental battle for me. 4y
SheilaChew Same here, except I didn‘t have much anxiety before, and now I feel on the edge of panic all the time. 4y
ChasingOm Same. I was okay during the beginning but then when people stopped acting like it was a big deal, I got more anxious. I did my first grocery pick-up (vs shopping in store) this week. 😬 4y

DaveGreen7777 Definitely not just you! Wherever I go, I find myself wondering if someone there may have the virus and I might be infected, even though I wear my mask everywhere! 😔 4y
rabbitprincess I feel the same way! We are allowed to be in a « bubble » that consists of 10 people (no social distancing measures required), and even visiting people in that bubble, whom I trust, is nerve-racking. 4y
Catherine_Willoughby We have blocked the reopening of pubs for 3 more weeks. I personally wouldnt attend a house party at the moment till my kids have returned to full time education. I have not had any alone time since March 9th. Exhausted. Only 10 people (from 4 households) can meet in private homes. Too many clusters over house parties 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I think it‘s totally reasonable to be more anxious. I sure as heck wouldn‘t go to a pool party! In fact, I think I‘d be even more worried about a gathering like that since things have been reopening. You don‘t know who was at a bar last weekend 😬 (edited) 4y
Thndrstd I totally agree. I am even more anxious these days when I‘m forced even just outside. *hugs* 4y
Branwen @Thndrstd @Clare-Dragonfly @Catherine_Willoughby @rabbitprincess @DaveGreen7777 @ChasingOm @SheilaChew @jen_the_scribe Thank you so so SO much, my friends, for sharing your own feelings and experiences about covid anxiety. It made me feel a lot better and also made me realize that I'm not alone! 🤗💕📚 Love you all! 4y
Bette Thanks for putting voice to it. I know I get anxious when someone wants to meet, I have so much hesitation now. It's like the more we shelter alone...the harder it is to socialize. 😬😷 Outside is better than inside though, at least the breeze moves things around. 🌬 4y
Bette How's this book? I think I have a hold on it at the library. 4y
Branwen @Bette I agree! While it's still hard, it is easier when it is a social engagement that takes place outside. I was still a nervous wreck though! So I am almost finished with the book and I absolutely love it. It feels like taking a swim in a warm ocean. That's a weird description, I know, but it really does feel that way! It's a bit slow at times, but honestly just so worth it! 4y
Bette Thanks! Now I will really look forward to it. 👍😊 4y

After a thunderstorm last night the weather finally cooled down enough to make it enjoyable to read outside again! 😀 This is my favorite reading spot at the park! 💕📚🌿

keys_on_fire I feel the same way! I have spent most of my day outside feeling the sun and the breeze while I read. Thank God for the rain that cooled things off a bit! 4y
MicheleinPhilly Ugh, I wish! We had a tropical storm yesterday and the humidity today is still off the charts. I hate summer so much. 4y
Branwen @keys_on_fire Right?! I never would have been able to do this if the storm hadn't cooled everything off! 😀 @MicheleinPhilly Ugh is right. That crazy humidity is the absolute worst! 😝 I like summer okay, but I'm really looking forward to fall! ❤🍁 4y
