The Patient
The Patient | Jasper DeWitt
The Silent Patient by way of Stephen King: Parker, a young, overconfident psychiatrist new to his job at a mental asylum, miscalculates catastrophically when he undertakes curing a mysterious and profoundly dangerous patient. In a series of online posts, Parker H., a young psychiatrist, chronicles the harrowing account of his time working at a dreary mental hospital in New England. Through this internet message board, Parker hopes to communicate with the world his effort to cure one bewildering patient. We learn, as Parker did on his first day at the hospital, of the facilitys most difficult, profoundly dangerous casea forty-year-old man who was originally admitted to the hospital at age six. This patient has no known diagnosis. His symptoms seem to evolve over time. Every person who has attempted to treat him has been driven to madness or suicide. Desperate and fearful, the hospitals directors keep him strictly confined and allow minimal contact with staff for their own safety, convinced that releasing him would unleash catastrophe on the outside world. Parker, brilliant and overconfident, takes it upon himself to discover what ails this mystery patient and finally cure him. But from his first encounter with the mystery patient, things spiral out of control, and, facing a possibility beyond his wildest imaginings, Parker is forced to question everything he thought he knew. Fans of Sarah Pinboroughs Behind Her Eyes and Paul Tremblays The Cabin at the End of the World will be riveted by Jasper DeWitts astonishing debut.

A short but definitely not sweet book, The Patient follows newly qualified psychologist, Parker, who has taken a job working at a mental hospital. The book is written in the form of blog posts detailing Parker's contact with a patient named 'Joe' who is a forty-one-year-old man who has been at the hospital since he was a young boy. Few people have contact with him & he seems to be incurable, but Parker thinks he may be able to get through to him.

OutsmartYourShelf As the book is so short, it was difficult to get to know or really care about Parker & some of his decisions were strange. Parker's naiveite & youthful enthusiasm lead him astray & disaster is only narrowly averted initially. I can't imagine being that gullible to be honest. The writing style was okay but I think a slightly longer book may have fleshed out the characters more & given the reader more time to actually connect with the MC. 13mo
OutsmartYourShelf It was a gripping read but can't say I actually enjoyed reading it due to some of the subject matter (trigger warnings below). 2.5⭐

TWs: suicide, sexual assault, animal cruelty/death, coarse language.

I'm such a horror snob. I'm overly critical and am rarely ever completely happy. I'm usually most disappointed by the ending. This book had a great wind up & it was a fast and compelling read....but the big reveal and ending left me disappointed. But, if you aren't as damn critical & demanding with horror stories you'll probably love it

A psychiatrist takes a job at a run down mental hospital. He decides to take on the most challenging patient there, who has driven most staff insane or suicidal.

🎧 I loved the pace of this book. A new mental health provider (blogger), an older crazy man. Or is he crazy. You follow the doctor as he tries to diagnosis and help Joe. You get some backstory of the doctor. All in all a face paced interesting character study of a doctor/patient at an asylum. Novella.

Not to be confused with ‘The Silent Patient‘ this novel is cleverly told from the perspective of a young psychiatrist through a series of online posts. The story itself is fairly simple but sufficiently creepy.

This is a quick & unsettling read that will send shivers up your spine. It‘s set as a blog written by a mental health professional named Parker H. He recounts his time working in a hospital where a patient called Joe has been confined since he was a child. Much mystery & death surrounds Joe. Joe is assigned to the care of Parker who begins to unravel Joe‘s past & his stay at the facility. This is a quick read that delivers a powerful punch.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I got some thriller vibes, some Doctor Who vibes. The narrator was fantastic. Definitely recommend for a fast, entertaining read. #Libby #audiobook

Just finished this one and it was amazing. The way it‘s written you kind of think of this is a published blog, so that means it‘s true. But it‘s only written that way. But because it puts you in that mind set you get hooked in like wait what happened to this doctor? Then you finish and remember it‘s all just fiction. I will definitely be reading this again.

Still making my way through this one but I have to say I am surprised by it. For a minute I thought the author had taken an easy way out to end the story but of course one thing changed all of it and now I can‘t wait to know what going to happen to this patient and his psychiatrist.

I waited weeks for this and blew through it in no time at all. It reads like a creepypasta which makes sense seeing as the author's written stories for the nosleep subreddit.

This was a creepy story about an ambitious young doctor trying to help an "unhelpable" patient and getting way more than he bargained for. Looking forward to more from this author!

Absolutely loved everything about this from the setting to the writing format. It‘s short yet dark & twisted paired with unreliable narration.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐for a quite short read this book packs one heck of a punch. It was dark, twisty, psychological thriller with a horror element thrown in as well. It's one of those thrillers that sticks in your mind long after the last page has been consumed. Unbelievably, it's the authors debut novel, I look forward to more. It's early days in my 2021 I know, but it may make it to my top 20 reads of 2021 it was that good. #jasperdewitt #thepatient

#105 of 2020. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

MB1994 105! How do you read so much? 4y
DarkMina @mb1994 This is the most I have read in a year. Sometimes I can listen to audiobooks while I am at work. Not everyday or the whole night necessarily. I am a Manager, so if I am working on something on my own and not interacting with someone on my team, I can listen to books. Depends on what I am doing. I also listen to them on a faster speed. Once you do that you realize how slow the speaking is on some books. 4y
MB1994 @DarkMina that makes sense. That‘s an impressive number! I should try to pick up the speed and see if it helps me. 4y

When narcissism rules over logic you can expect a thriller ride! While the story was unnerving in the typical thriller fashion, I was lost at the end. It didn‘t seem like the story was brought to a conclusion incorporating all aspects Of the story. There were a lot of unanswered questions and not in the thoughtful, reflective manner. They more more like the missing pieces of this puzzle.

For fans of Stephen King, Bentley Little, and Robert McCammon…

There is absolutely no way I would have guessed where this story was going. It is creepy, scary, suspenseful, horrifying. If you can‘t handle dark books, don‘t come near this one. A short, quick read.

Warning – There is one scene of animal abuse. I quickly jumped over that.

Thank you to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and BookishFirst for the ARC.

This is a short and subtly terrifying peek at psychology, fear, and the monsters and demons all of us are afraid to face. I loved the confessional format that made it feel more personal and intimate than the traditional narrative. This also gave me a somewhat false sense of security that I knew where this was all heading...when I really had no idea! The more I think about the ending the more unsettled I am. Great quick read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I would definitely give this book closer to 3.5 stars. I think some of the supernatural elements just didn‘t sit right with me and the book just really felt rushed. I thought it was creepy and I was very intrigued by the story, but I wish it had been developed more. It was good, just needed a little more to the story.

I really enjoyed this one! Was it not a holiday weekend, this would have easily been a one-sitting read! Told in a fresh format, this spooky story comes as an archived posting from a new psychiatrist‘s first job and the unusual patient who nearly ran him out of medicine altogether. With mounting horror, this raised legitimate goosebumps! Well-written and creepy- I can‘t wait to see what DeWitt writes next! #NetGalley

At only 205 pages, The Patient by Jasper DeWitt is a quick and hair-raising read for fans of the thriller and horror genres. I think the length of the book was absolutely perfect. The author did a fantastic job with dispensing the right amount of key information while keeping up the energy of the story and placing the unease of what is not yet known in the forefront of the reader's mind.

The Patient is a novel of intrigue and mystery that gleefully hops between genres on multiple occasions, and while it ultimately is more of a book for horror fans, still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Recommended for... anyone who likes the idea of an Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs mash up.
