Meet Hail: Captain. Gunrunner. Fugitive. Quick, sarcastic, and lethal, Hailimi Bristol doesn't suffer fools gladly. She has made a name for herself in the galaxy for everything except what she was born to do: rule the Indranan Empire. That is, until two Trackers drag her back to her home planet to take her rightful place as the only remaining heir. But trading her ship for a palace has more dangers than Hail could have anticipated. Caught in a web of plots and assassination attempts, Hail can't do the one thing she did twenty years ago: run away. She'll have to figure out who murdered her sisters if she wants to survive. A gun smuggler inherits the throne in this Star Wars-style science fiction adventure from debut author K. B. Wagers. Full of action-packed space opera exploits and courtly conspiracy - not to mention an all-out galactic war - Behind the Throne will please fans of James S. A Corey, Becky Chambers and Lois McMaster Bujold, or anyone who wonders what would happen if a rogue like Han Solo were handed the keys to an empire . . .

Twenty years ago, Hailimi left her life as a princess and became a successful gunrunner beyond the reach of the Indranan Empire. When disaster strikes, she's forced to return home and fight for her life. An entertaining space opera set in a matriarchy founded by colonists from India, it's a good read and the beginning of a trilogy; my only quibble is that the snarky heroine winks and sticks out her tongue a lot. Please stop! Just, no.

It's been busy with my seasonal job kicking off this month so I didn't do a bookspin. I'm good at reading while Rick drives, though and a late night here and there meant I could rent and finish The Indranan War series by K.B. Wagers. It's a space opera, with a reluctant gunrunner-turned-Empress fighting to take back her throne and get revenge on the man who destroyed her family. It was really good and am now on series 2, The Farian War trilogy.

julesG It's a great series. Read it a few weeks ago. 2y

This is the first book of the Indranan War trilogy. I really liked the whole trilogy.

Told from the POV of Hail, former gunrunner now heir to the Indranan empire. Hail has to weather assassination attempts, scandals and betrayals. The empire is based on Indian/Hindu culture and matriarchal.

Really enjoyed it. Hail was a runaway princess turned gunrunner. Someone‘s killing off her family and now she has no choice but to return home, especially since they tried to kill her too. But things come to light that make her realize that the past she thought she knew was a lie. The empire thinks it needs a princess, but maybe it needs a gunrunner instead. Just ordered book two. Excited to continue the adventure.

There were so many things I loved about this space opera but beyond the awesome characters & great dialogue the biggest thing is this. Our MC, Hail is 38. A badass female who can kill you just as smoothly as she can debate...and she's my age. Most heroines are depicted as young whippersnappers or the venerable wise woman. There are very few that are in their 30s/40s. It's nice to see a gunrunner princess who isn't maiden, mother, or crone.

This book was a lot of fun to read, but I could tell it was a first novel. The writing stumbled in places and could have used another edit or two. There were so many characters that it was difficult to keep track of everyone. However, I thought Hail was an interesting character and there was a ton of political intrique. Overall, I gave it 3 stars and do want to continue on with the series. #scifi

So I'm about 7 hrs into #24b42019. I'm not sure exactly the time I am at, bc my hubby deleted my stopwatch timer thinking he was helping me. I've only finished Skyward so far, but I'm enjoying the rest of them, especially the tagged book!

rjsthumbelina Forgot to add my audiobook on here: I'm also listening to Where the Crawdads Sing, bc I am trying to make a point of reading most of Reese's bookclub picks, since I have loved the few I have read! 6y

Ok, part of the unveiling of my #summersantagoespostal. I unwrapped and then fell asleep before posting last night. I feel that @megt has seen my bookcases. Four cozies, FOUR - the perfect number for a mini book binge. Blackout involves time travel, not via the T.A.R.D.I.S. but the Doctor can't be everywhere. And finally, the book I've tagged. I'm starting it first. I'm sold just on the description. 😉

This book had everything I love--badass ladies taking charge, interesting world building, and a refreshing lack of romance. Not a genre I pick up a lot but I'm glad I did! Can't wait for the next one!

Hail is a princess-turned-gunrunner who left home to track down her father's killer twenty years ago. Now she's next in line to the throne after her sisters and niece (this is a matriarchal society) are murdered. It's a good setup for a fun space opera action story, and Hail is very likable. My only problem is there were a lot of characters that I sometimes couldn't keep track of. But I enjoyed this one enough to read the sequel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Been quiet on here lately because I've been a beta reader for Twitter friend's novel, but now I'm back with this space opera about a princess-turned-gunrunner who returns home after her sisters are murdered. I'm digging the gritty space smugglers crossed with court intrigue vibe so far.

This is a little more pulpy than I like my sci-fi these days, but is a great ride for all that. Our heroine is especially a joy - I would love more SFF protagonists to swear as often in life as I do. 😀

This sci fi novel features a gunrunner who, it turns out, is a princess in hiding. I really loved that the main character was an Indian woman, and the culture is based on Indian culture. I didn't quite connect with the main character, but am hoping I will in book 2--it's definitely a fun novel!

My September reading slump is worse than I realised... One book! But I've started many 😖 BMO sums up my current reading mood...

I'm halfway through season 4 of Elementary... I'm hoping Morland Holmes comes back soon - it's lovely seeing John Noble ☺️

Chessa I only have 2 eps left of Season 4 and I'm doing that thing where I don't watch them so there will still be eps to watch. I hate when there are no more! 😂😱 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Chessa, season 5 episode 1 has aired... I do that too - sometimes I never go back (like if the show gets cancelled) 8y
Chessa Argh, it must be that Hulu isn't getting them by episode. I'll probably have to wait until the whole season is over before it's added. CBS shows are so weird with streaming. 8y

MR SQUIGGLE! *hums theme song endlessly*

I got 1000% distracted from life by season three of the Blacklist (😫 I need moooore but there currently isn't any) so I'm still reading this delightful book 💜

In other news - can anyone recommend a TV show?

queerbookreader Yes but it depends on what you like, and also if you want it currently running or if it's fine being an off-air completed show 😝 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @lemonlime799, I'm good with running or completed shows. My other all time favourite shows include: Psych, White Collar, Boston Legal, Black Books, Alias... (I like most things - except being really scared) 8y
Chessa Oooh! We have some favorite overlap! Have you watched Elementary? It's on Hulu, three seasons. What about Burn Notice? The first three seasons are the best, but all seven are on Netflix. I'll keep pondering... 8y
See All 18 Comments
queerbookreader I LOVE Elementary @Chessa and I also always recommend Buffy the Vampire Slayer. New Girl is a good show if you haven't watched that yet. I'm focusing on Star Trek right now so any of those series are good too. If you like animations, Archer is absolutely hilarious; it's got the same voice actor as Bob's Burgers, and he's so funny 8y
Chessa Oh, also The Closer if you haven't watched it yet. I don't know if it's on any streaming places for free, but the library might have the DVDs and it's a few years old now so probably not in the highest demand. 8y
grumpygirlbooks Parks and Recreation is one of my favorite shows of all time so I gotta recommend that! Season one is meh but later is sooooooo worth it 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Chessa, I had forgotten about Burn Notice! I don't remember where I was up to... Same with Elementary actually 😊 I love Sherlock-Y things! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @lemonlime799, Oooh, I haven't heard of Bobs Burgers or Archer ☺️ shall investigate! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @grumpygirlbooks, YASS! That's how I recommend Parks and Rec too 😂 season one is meh! 8y
Chessa Bob's Burgers is hilarious. We also love Brooklyn 99 - I think all three seasons are on Hulu? 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Chessa, I kinda remember The Closer from when it was on tv ☺️ I shall interrogate the library catalogue. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Brooklyn 99 has a season 3! @Chessa - this is excellent news (except Australia doesn't have Hulu) 8y
Chessa @grumpygirlbooks That's actually good to know! I've tried to start P&R a couple times and it's funny but it hasn't hooked me yet (like ep 4 or 5). I will now push through that first season knowing that it picks up! 8y
Chessa Oh that is a shame about Hulu! 😫 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Chessa, just proceed straight to season 2 (maybe just read the episode summaries). Australia is annoyingly slow to jump on the streaming tv shows bandwagon (Netflix only launched an Australian service last year) and even the ones that do can be super slow in uploading new episodes! 8y
LeeRHarry Suits, suits and more suits!! Suits is a great series on Universal on Foxtel so check out for reruns on that 😊 mr squiggle hehe 😊 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I've heard of that! Thanks @LeeRHarry 8y

Read this and then read it again. Strong female protagonist who's a gunrunner suddenly finds herself called back (okay kidnapped back) to her home planet because the 3 people in front of her for the imperial throne have been killed. Cross Honor Harrington w/Goblin Emperor and you have Hail Bristol.
