Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt
Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt | Toby A H Wilkinson

"NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER In this landmark work, one of the world's most renowned Egyptologists tells the epic story of this great civilization, from its birth as the first nation-state to its final absorption into the Roman Empire--three thousand years of wild drama, bold spectacle, and unforgettable characters. Award-winning scholar Toby Wilkinson captures not only the lavish pomp and artistic grandeur of this land of pyramids and pharaohs but for the first time reveals the constant propaganda and repression that were its foundations. Drawing upon forty years of archaeological research, Wilkinson takes us inside an exotic tribal society with a pre-monetary economy and decadent, divine kings who ruled with all-too-recognizable human emotions. Here are the years of the Old Kingdom, where Pepi II, made king as an infant, was later undermined by rumors of his affair with an army general, and the Middle Kingdom, a golden age of literature and jewelry in which the benefits of the afterlife became available for all, not just royalty--a concept later underlying Christianity. Wilkinson then explores the legendary era of the New Kingdom, a lost world of breathtaking opulence founded by Ahmose, whose parents were siblings, and who married his sister and transformed worship of his family into a national cult. Other leaders include Akhenaten, the "heretic king," who with his wife Nefertiti brought about a revolution with a bold new religion; his son Tutankhamun, whose dazzling tomb would remain hidden for three millennia; and eleven pharaohs called Ramesses, the last of whom presided over the militarism, lawlessness, and corruption that caused a crucial political and societal decline. Riveting and revelatory, filled with new information and unique interpretations, "The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt "will become the standard source about this great civilization, one that lasted--so far--longer than any other.

Overall, this was a solid book. Slow most of the time, it's a good introduction to the entirety of Ancient Egypt's history. Of course, you'll need to read other books to get more details on each Pharoah. I appreciated the excursuses on people under the Pharaohs...

thereadingpal Although my main focus for this book was studying the general history of Ancient Egypt for an upcoming exam.
I did NOT appreciate much the snarky comments and the references to modern and contemporary History - eh. Anyway: decent read, give it a go if you want to know more about how Ancient Egypt worked.

thereadingpal @Cinfhen thank you! I found that challenge on Storygraph. Joined a bit late because it started at the beginning of the Jewish new year and I joined like two days ago LOL but as I'm participating in Jewish life and starting the process of conversion to Reform Judaism, I thought it would be a good way to get deeper into it ☺️ I can share the prompts if you want! 3y

Eggs Welcome to Litsy 💗🥳📚 3y
thereadingpal @Eggs thank you! 3y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen Thanks for the tag 😊 Welcome @thereadingpal 🤗 We do two readathons a month. A 9 day Choose Your Own Goal Readathon that usually starts on the second Saturday of the month, and a four day #20in4 Readathon over the last weekend of each month. Would be great to have you join us on either. 3y
thereadingpal @Andrew65 can you explain the 20in4 more in detail to me? I've seen it around but I've not understood how it works 😅 3y
Andrew65 @thereadingpal The aim is to try to either read 20 hours or 20 chapters over the four days of the Readathon. Although it‘s very relaxed and informal so you are free to set your own time or chapter target., or just take part without a goal or target. It runs Friday - Monday inclusive. This month it will be 24th - 27th June. Main thing is just to enjoy reading books with others and share your progress over the four days by posting. (edited) 3y
thereadingpal @Andrew65 oh nice!!! I'll try to participate :D 3y
Andrew65 @thereadingpal If you want to the part, let me know and ‘I‘ll add you to the people I tag in when posting about the Readathon. All welcome 😁 3y
thereadingpal @Andrew65 please do tag me!! 3y
Andrew65 @thereadingpal Think we posted t the same time, I‘ll add you to the tags 😊 Be great to have you with us. 3y

How's everyone today?

This book is quite interesting but oh gosh, the names are so many and so hard to remember. I really like the fact it talks about the people under the various pharaohs and kings, though. It's often overlooked in history books.
I've got this exam on the 14th, and hopefully it'll go well :)

Early bird gets the worm!

Today I'm packed full between studying and going to physiotherapy and electrostimulation for my leg (something happened to it but I don't want to bother you with it).

Also, would you like to see the books that have a space on my shelves? 😄

I made a list in my #bulletjournal of the books I'm #currentlyreading ... Because I keep picking things up and leaving them behind. I really meant to finish these books, and I hope I'll be able to share my opinion with you :)

What are you currently reading?

#italian #studying #bujo

GondorGirl I keep a bullet journal too! I just use it for what I read, which books are coming out soon that I'm interested in, and what books I've bought. It's such a great way to keep track of things, and I've found working on it to be very relaxing. 3y
thereadingpal @GondorGirl I started it mostly for writing purposes, but now I'm trying to personalize it with daily logs and challenges and lists. It's very relaxing indeed and so nice to see things nicely spread out xD 3y
GondorGirl @thereadingpal I'm jealous though, my handwriting is nowhere near as nice as yours! 😂 3y
thereadingpal @GondorGirl aw thank you ahahah I personally don't like my handwriting but people seem to love it 🥺😳 3y
