Thursday's Children
Thursday's Children: A Virago Modern Classic | Rumer Godden
17 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
Doone Penny is a child with a gift - he was born to dance. But though others recognise his talent, there is little encouragement from his family. His mother preens over his pretty sister, Crystal, also a dancer, but fiercely competitive and vain. Doone's father would never allow a son of his to have ballet lessons, and his brothers think he's a sissy. But Doone has passion and ambition beyond his years, and knows he can succeed, if only he is given the chance. If he can make it into Queen's Chase, Her Majesty's Junior Ballet School, he'll show them all . ..

Not a day goes by that I don‘t miss my dad… he has been gone three years and I would give anything for him to interrupt me reading again!

1. I like them. But I don't always end up liking the book.
2. I have this book “pillow“ but it's more of a stand for on the couch. it works with my books, and my ipad. and it has pockets. If I get a chance tonight. I'll take a picture.
3. Opps I should have read this before I tagged the book I did. So lets go with the Garth Nix Keys to the Kingdom Series (if I was paying attention I would have tagged Sir Thurday.)

Thank @moonwithc94

RaeLovesToRead Ooh... a book pillow... I'm intrigued... 3y

Love starting off a new book with a map, just gives context and a feel for the book straightaway and brings the book to life. Yet again with this series we have a map of one of London‘s hidden rivers. Despite living in London for the first 20 years of my life not heard of the River Walbrook. Although I lived in South London and this one is in the north. #MapsofLitsy

MicrobeMom Agreed! Love a book with a map!! 6y

On Saturday @Tove_Reads and I are starting an informal Buddy Read of Thursday‘s Child by Nicci French, which is book 4 in the Freida Klein series. All are welcome to join us. We will do a new post at the end of each day to discuss the section, the more the merrier. #ThursdaysChildBuddyRead

Tove_Reads Done for today! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Already, I haven‘t even started. 😂 6y
Tove_Reads I like this one a lot more than Wednesday. It‘s interesting to learn about her past from long ago. I also find it easier to follow because there are less side plots this time. Sandy moving to London took me by surprise. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘ve now finished the section. Agree totally about initial impressions being better than the last book. It feels much freer flowing and easier and quicker to read, again helped by focusing on one plot. Surprised how quickly I read it. Sandy moving to London was a shock, but why a separate flat? You come back from America then live separately? Frieda‘s past rape was a surprise. 6y
Andrew65 Any thoughts on Chloe and Jack? @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads I think something will happen to C and J, pregnancy or something. It will be interesting to learn more about Frieda‘s past. It feels like the story is really moving forward by opening up her past to us readers. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads It does feel like we will find out more about her past. Any thoughts what might happen to C and J? The mother won‘t be happy when she finds out especially when she finds out Frieda knew. 6y
Tove_Reads Pregnancy, that‘s what I believe will happen. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Fairly safe bet by the look of it! 6y
Tove_Reads This is def my fave book this far! Shocker how she treats Sandy. Poor chap! Wow about her mother! So much information about her past that she seems like a totally different person. And the “suicide”. Things are really heating up, only bad things happening. 6y
Andrew65 It feels a very different book to the others and has a much better flow and focus @Tove_Reads Breaking off with Sandy was a total shock, what was that all about! In the middle of a walk. You go and get the bus, I‘m walking home!!! 😳The suicide was another great shock. Surely it‘s murder! How long before Freida is blamed for this in the press. 6y
Tove_Reads Nothing really happens and a lot really happens. Seems like some people know a lot more than they claim to remember about what happened 23 years ago. Quite a few peeps she talks to after all these years. What about her dad‘s suicide? And that Sarah‘s suicide? I doubt her dad was a victim, but I feel like the same man has indeed done it to more than two women. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes think Sarah was a victim too. I‘m a bit suspicious about the head Teacher who was her form tutor. I do wonder what is behind her dad‘s suicide. Also what about that missing scarf? Where will that turn up. Will it end up being a murder weapon? So many questions and so many suspicious and guilty acting people. 6y
Tove_Reads One of those towns with secrets after secrets... I don‘t wonder why Frieda left in the first place, but 16 is young... it‘s weird how people, for example, Sandy are mentioned briefly, something big happens, and then it‘s not really mentioned again. Frieda‘s family is the most dysfunctional ever. 6y
Tove_Reads Done! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads You‘re ahead of me, I got a bit behind on yesterday‘s section but still hop to finish tonight. 6y
Tove_Reads Still not finished? You are on thin ice as it is... 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads No been a very difficult week at work so got behind on this one. 😔😡 6y

I am not a comic person so I can‘t really answer any of these question.

I will just let the folks who like comics know about the questions so they can join in the fun.

Thanks, @GarthRanzz

1. I‘m just in #foreverforever right now. I‘ll be running #earthseedbuddyread for Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler. That‘ll start in June!

2. I tried that with my first marriage. Nope. Ultimately, this is me. But if you held a gun to my head and forced me to change, I‘d take my husband‘s last name.

3. My relationship to music is complicated right now. So .... I‘ve got nothing.

#trivialthursday @GarthRanzz

GarthRanzz Thanks for participating Barbara! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I do love this song. But right now I can‘t properly appreciate this version. I have an issue with noise in my ears that makes music impossible to enjoy. I miss it terribly! 7y

A beautiful story about a boy and his passion for ballet. Godden writes in an unsentimental way about children's fierce desires and coming to terms with who you are. I'm not sure why but I was completely undone by it, ugly crying by the time I reached the end. #LetsDance #SeptemBowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen
