Leah Kaminskys powerful fiction debuta multi-generational novel perfect for fans of The Tigers Wife and A Constellation of Vital Phenomenaunfolds over a day in the life of a young physician in contemporary Israel, who must cope with modern threats in the shadow of her parents horrific wartime pasts. The Waiting Room is both haunted, and haunting.Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March A young doctor in Haifa, Israel, must come to terms with her familys painful pastand its lingering aftermathas the conflict between Palestine and Israel reaches its height and the threat of a terrorist attack looms over the city.... Born to two survivors in the smoky after-haze of WWII, Dina has never been able to escape her parents history. Tortured by memories of Bergen-Belsen, her mother leaves Dina to inherit her decades of trauma. Dina desperately anchors herself in familya cherished young son, a world-weary husband, and a daughter on the wayand her work as a doctor, but she is struggling to cope, burdened by both the very real anxieties of her daily life and also the shadows of her parents ghosts, who follow her wherever she goes. A witty, sensitive narrator, she fights to stay grounded in the here-and-now, even as the challenges of motherhood and medicine threaten to overwhelm her. In taut, compelling prose, The Waiting Room weaves between Dinas exterior and interior lives, straddling the present and the pastand building towards a profoundly dramatic climax that will remind readers of the fragility of human life even as it reassures them of the inescapable power of love and family.

Heartbreaking. Intergenerational trauma is the thread throughout this book, and is so vividly wrought.

Picked this one up from the #littlefreelibrary at my temple. The best part of traveling by plane is long stretches of time to read. Finished one book while I ate breakfast and started this one waiting to board. And of course, I have a third book in my bag, for the flight home. :)

While working on my brakes I realized I had a really bad tire... So off to the shop I went.

Made a horrible, mentally fatal, mistake between leaving the house and sitting down in the wait room. 😭😭

Crazeedi Oh no!!!! Do you have kindle on your phone?? 6y
MotionChickness @Crazeedi I do, but since this wasn‘t planned, I didn‘t charge up my phone and I‘m a huge weirdo about making sure I have some charge in case I need it for an emergency. It‘s on 38% and I think the kindle app would burn it 👎🏻 6y
Crazeedi @Stephuhhnieee yes I understand that totally!! 6y

What do people who don't read do in waiting rooms? Getting my car fixed and hanging out with @drokka's #LMPBC pick

@DebbieGrillo @CouronneDhiver

AmyG That‘s funny. I have watched people in waiting rooms. They either play with their phone, talk on the phone, watch TV (if there is one) or read a newspaper. Some just sit there 😳 To me...it‘s an opportunity for uninterrupted reading. 7y
drokka An appropriate place to read said book. 😉 And I've no idea what they do while waiting. 7y
JamieArc I find that they are often the same people who say they don‘t have time to read 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y

TheKidUpstairs @drokka I think they thought I was a little crazy, chuckling to myself and making notes 😁 7y
TheKidUpstairs @AmyG their loss! I mean, obviously I checked my phone sometimes, because a girl needs her Litsy fix. But mostly I was pumped for two plus hours of reading (with no kids around!) 7y

I'm giving up trying to read right now, because I've read the same paragraph three times and still don't know what it says. Why am I so distracted? Because our baby granddaughter is on her way! Our son texted us about 4 hours ago that they were at the hospital, and the last report a few minutes ago is that everything is looking good. I am no good at waiting!

Mehso-so

Another (!!) So-So to Pan. 😟 Unfortunately this ARC was a PDF and I had to read it on the iPad. The formatting was terrible and for me the story rambling and messy. These two issues had me not connecting to the story and skimming through it.

Can the good times keep rolling for me after finishing the wonderful 'The Secret Wisdom of the Earth' with 'The Waiting Room'? Let's hope so! Have to read it on the iPad though. 👓👀 😣

"Shlomi high-fives the security guard at the entrance." - This is so disturbingly accurate. My childhood in Israel is excellently portrayed in this book.

Set in Haifa, a city that fascinated me when I visited. Can't wait to dig into this.
