NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS' CHOICE - An ordinary town is transformed by a mysterious illness that triggers perpetual sleep in this mesmerizing novel from the bestselling author of The Age of Miracles. "Stunning."--Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven - "A startling, beautiful portrait of a community in peril."--Entertainment Weekly One night in an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep--and doesn't wake up. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate, Mei, cannot rouse her. Neither can the paramedics, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. When a second girl falls asleep, and then a third, Mei finds herself thrust together with an eccentric classmate as panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town. A young couple tries to protect their newborn baby as the once-quiet streets descend into chaos. Two sisters turn to each other for comfort as their survivalist father prepares for disaster. Those affected by the illness, doctors discover, are displaying unusual levels of brain activity, higher than has ever been recorded before. They are dreaming heightened dreams--but of what? Written in luminous prose, The Dreamers is a breathtaking and beautiful novel, startling and provocative, about the possibilities contained within a human life--if only we are awakened to them.Praise for The Dreamers "Walker's roving fictive eye by turns probes characters' innermost feelings and zooms out to coolly parse topics like reality versus delusion. . . . [It has] the perfect ambiguous frame for a tense and layered plot."--O: The Oprah Magazine "[Walker's] gripping, provocative novel should come with a warning: may cause insomnia."--People (Book of the Week) "Powerful and moving . . . written with symphonic sweep."--The New York Times Book Review "2019's first must-read novel . . . Alternately terrifying and moving . . . The Dreamers is overflowing with humanity."--Jezebel "This is an exquisite work of intimacy. Walker's sentences are smooth, emotionally arresting--of a true, ethereal beauty. . . . This book achieves [a] dazzling, aching humanity."--Entertainment Weekly

Eh. This was just okay. Published in 2019 before the recent plethora of pandemic fiction, it doesn‘t stand among the best. Or maybe I‘m just salty that she killed my favorite character. 😒

In a small California college town, students then other community members fall asleep for weeks or even months at a time. In order to contain the contagion, the town is cut off from the rest of the country making the healthy fight for survival, too.

Cinfhen I enjoyed this one but not sure how it would fare if I read it post Covid 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, I think I would‘ve liked it more in 2019. Cassandra Campbell is a great narrator! 1y
BarbaraBB I read it during Covid and was very underwhelmed 1y

It'd be safe to say I've been reading the tagged book for some time now, but with it being about a "sleeping sickness"-like virus... an epidemic falling over a small California town... I figured I could use a break from art imitating life.

@Cinfhen #bookreport

Cinfhen Great graphics ‼️I really likedThe Dreamers but I‘m not sure if I‘d like it as much if I was reading it now. 5y
Librariana @Cinfhen - Thank you for always having such positive remarks about my little collages 😊 Makes me feel sheepish and flattered! I think I'm gonna stick with The Dreamers since I am enjoying the writing, but I may continue to take breaks here and there. Plus, I've got like 3 other books going at the moment 😁 4y
Cinfhen You‘re welcome 😊 but I only compliment what I like...so obviously I appreciate your artistic creativity 💕😘 4y
TieDyeDude I really enjoyed My Brother's Husband 4y
Librariana @TieDyeDude - I'm glad you did! I'm enjoying it so far, too 😊 It was one of my last library pick ups prior to our SHSH order. 4y

I almost skipped this book based on the ratings here on Litsy...glad I read it anyways! Looking to escape the reality of the Coronavirus, I picked up this beautifully written book about a virus that traps victims in sleep and as a result causes an entire college town to be quarantined.
Fun escapism!😜

TheNerdyProfessor This was one of my favorite books from last year. Her writing is so magical. 5y

Dark humor for pandemic times.
Who is going pandemic reading when quarantined?
There are so many good reads out there for this subgenre!

Hooked_on_books Clearly I like this genre, as I‘ve read all but 2 of these. 😆 5y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books I still need to read Earth Abides, maybe I was saving it for a quarantine? 😂 5y
TReads I'm intrigued by The Dreamers and have only ever heard good things about Station Eleven. Might need to add those to my stack. ☺️ 5y
ChaoticMissAdventures @TReads Dreamers has mixed reviews online, but I loved it. I though the writing was so complementary to the story, all very ethereal. I even bought her other book as soon as I was done with Dreamers, even though it has been months and I have not gotten to it yet 😂 5y
TReads @ChaoticMissAdventures That sounds amazing!!! And the fact that you rushed out to buy her other book is, IMO, the best praise an author can get! I hope you enjoy it just as much as Dreamers someday soon. ;) #stacked (edited) 5y

This was a beautiful book to read. It‘s written in a way that makes you just want to keep reading. I enjoyed it as much as her first. The concept is engaging too, a sleeping sickness takes over the town, so you have to keep reading to find out what happens. It had a kind of thoughtful ending - what do the dreams mean and what did it mean that some people, like Annie, didn‘t dream? Or was she just saying she didn‘t? Hmm....

I sped thru this, finishing in only 2 days. (That's quick for me! 🤪) I really had no idea which way this book was going (I don't read summaries.) ...and I'll admit I was expecting more but I still enjoyed this book. It follows the lives of a few different characters, some of whom I got pretty attached to, as this sleep comes into their college town. It was a fun read for my book club and a good break from the heavier books we've been reading.

I really enjoyed this one. I won‘t say too much since it‘s being passed on for #lmpbc but I love the storyline and the concept. It reminded me of Sleeping Beauties and The Fever. Very interesting and the writing is just excellent!!

Bookish_AF Yes it reminded me of Sleeping Beauties too! 5y

In a secluded coastal college town, a mysterious sickness is spreading that causes people to fall into comas. The sleepers seem to be dreaming but it‘s survivors we follow as they try to figure out how to stay awake and alive. I liked many of the characters but was underwhelmed by the resolution.

#LMPBC

I rated this a pick but it‘s more between a pick and a so-so. I do like her style- a “quiet” dystopian story that is more character focused and not action focused. I enjoyed the dream-like writing and the mysterious tone. Still, something about this left me vaguely unsatisfied. It may just be I preferred The Age of Miracles over this one.

I‘ll be getting this to the post office within the next couple of days!

It‘s still a bit humid but thankfully it‘s cooled off enough and it‘s breezy enough that I can get my #LMPBC on out on the porch instead of locked inside!

I feel like I have read a few books about people falling asleep for long times for mysterious reasons recently? In this one it happens in one town only, passing like a virus. I liked how the POVs shifted.

Happy Women‘s History Month everyone! 🎉 💕
Though there are 2 George Saunders books on this table, it impressed me how female-dominant this display table was. It always makes me smile when I see SO many great books written by impressive women.

What if a sickness started infecting those around you? They are alive, but in a deep sleep, stumping doctors and scientists alike. This is the apocalyptic premise of The Dreamers. Although you might see this as dystopian fiction, it‘s also a character study of what people will do in desperate situations. Each character has a small focus, but Walker‘s superb writing connects you to them. With this and The Age of Miracles. a niche has been carved.

A mysterious illness striking down the population. One by one they fall into the deepest of sleeps. Fathers, Mothers, Children, Friends. Even those sent to help. A glimpse into what happens when the enemy is unseen, everyone could be a carrier and how relationships break down or break new ground under strain. It left me with a lot of unresolved questions as to the nature of the virus and what the dreamers actually did dream about...
