Treblinka
Treblinka | Chil Rajchman
19 posts | 13 read | 28 to read
Chil Rajchman, a Polish Jew, was arrested with his younger sister in 1942 and sent to Treblinka, a death camp where more than 750,000 were murdered before it was abandoned by German soldiers. His sister was sent to the gas chambers, but Rajchman escaped execution, working for ten months under incessant threats and beatings as a barber, a clothes-sorter, a corpse-carrier, a puller of teeth from those same bodies. In August 1943, there was an uprising at the camp, and Rajchman was among the handful of men who managed to escape. In 1945, he set down this account, a plain, unembellished and exact record of the raw horror he endured every day. This unique testimony, which has remained in the sole possession of his family ever since, has never before been published in English. For its description of unspeakably cruelty, Treblinka is a memoir that will not be superseded. In addition to Rajchman's account, this volume will include the complete text of Vasily Grossman's "The Hell of Treblinka," one of the first descriptions of a Nazi extermination camp; a powerful and harrowing piece of journalism written only weeks after the camp was dissolved.

S3V3N @Smrloomis Thanks for playing! I took French in high school. Love the language, but never used it. I don't remember much.🤦🏽‍♀️ 5y
Smrloomis @BeaG I know what you mean. It disappears quickly if we don‘t use it. I feel the same way about my muscles - or what‘s left of them 😫😂 5y

This man suffered through so much. His short recounting of the Treblinka death camp is as bad as you can imagine and then some. This photograph is from his entry in the Holocaust Encyclopedia from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/id-card/chil-meyer-rajchman

MyNamesParadise I‘ve been to the Treblinka site and it‘s a harrowing experience. 5y
Smrloomis @MyNamesParadise Now that I have read this, I can imagine. His descriptions were so incredibly detailed and it was of course disturbing to read about it all. (edited) 5y

I don‘t know if I have the words to describe this short memoir of a man sent to a Nazi death camp. His writing was so to the point and candid. He described awful things he saw and had to do to survive. It still shocks me how people can treat others in such horrific ways.

IamIamIam Great review. I'll definitely put this on my TBR. 5y

Last day of the Holocaust Education Beacon School residential today. I was nervous before I arrived, in case the people weren‘t nice or the content was too challenging, but it‘s been brilliant and I needn‘t have worried! I‘m looking forward to bringing all that I‘ve learnt back into school next half term.

Day two of the Holocaust Education Beacon School residential programme. It‘s been so, so good so far. So much information and lots of opportunities to think more deeply about this difficult topic. Two days to go!

Chrissyreadit Oh! I bet it is an amazing experience. 5y
Connster @Chrissyreadit It really is! I‘ve learnt a ton and still there are two days to go! So interesting! 5y

Heavy material, no doubt, but such a testimony to what the Nazis did in Treblinka. It is because of men like Chil that we are able to gain an understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust.

Crazeedi So hard to read but so important to realize and never forget 6y
RavensCarm Extremely hard to read and understand that it was truly his life, truly how things happened in Treblinka. Never forget! 6y

I‘m ashamed to say that I didn‘t know much about the Nazi death camps until I started watching documentaries on Netflix a few summers ago. Auschwitz gets most of our attention, but it was primarily a labor and concentration camp. Treblinka was a death factory where nearly 1 million Jews were killed in an industrialized manner. There were few survivors and those Jews were forced to remove evidence of the killings. This is an extraordinary document.

Chil Rajchman is one of only a handful of survivors of Treblinka. He recounts the horrors of the extermination camp in a straightforward manner. I was in tears from the very beginning. This is so difficult to listen to but it must be read/listened to and absorbed to fully understand the absolutely gruesome events that were able to occur. We must never let this happen again.

Not sure how much longer this will be a Kindle or Google Play deal. I just got a copy. This author was among the only survivors of Treblinka.
