An English June in the Roman Wall countryside; the ruin of a beautiful old house standing cheek-by-jowl with the solid, sunlit prosperity of the manor farm - a lovely place, and a rich inheritance for one of the two remaining Winslow heirs. There had been a third, but Annabel Winslow had died four years ago - so when a young woman calling herself Annabel Winslow comes 'home' to Whitescar, Con Winslow and his half-sister Lisa must find out whether she really is who she says she is.

#AboutABook #WithMystery @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

This is my favorite kind of mystery. The one where the author has you questioning what kind of story you‘re even reading…is it a ghost story or a long con? a mystery or a thriller?

Eggs Yes! The ones that keep you guessing 🙌🏻 5mo

Mary Stewart is a go-to when I need a comfort read, and this did not disappoint.

I hate this font (and the bright white pages it‘s printed upon) so intensely that I‘m honestly not sure I can read this book.

ChaoticMissAdventures Fonts and the quality of the pages really are a deterrent for some books! Who decides this? And is it a cost issue? Either way I totally understand what you mean. 9mo

JuniperWilde I wouldn‘t read a book if the form got in the way unless I had to (grad school) or really loved the story. 9mo

A case of mistaken identity by Hadrian's Wall has a young woman pretending to be Annabel Winslow at the behest of Annabel's gorgeous but menacing cousin Con who is seeking to secure his own inheritance of the farm. There are three potential heirs (including Annabel), old love affairs to negotiate and several attempted murders. Twisty and Gothic and clever with surreptitious sandwiches being sneaked to the cat hiding under the armchair.

The book opens along Hadrian's Wall looking down at a majestic sycamore. I could picture exactly where our heroine was which was lovely, but it made me sad for that gorgeous tree, too.

I finally finished THE IVY TREE this afternoon, with Geo nearby! I didn‘t quite love it, but I did like it an awful lot and I‘m pleased with myself for being right about everything.

Another of yesterday‘s reads. Alas, I only had time to read a couple chapters while I snuggled with Wesley. Hopefully I can squeeze in some more of its tension and quiet menace today, with Casey for company.

#12Booksof2023 October tends to be a good reading month for me, and true to form this year had several standout titles that month, but getting introduced to the work of Mary Stewart with my #sundaybuddyread peeps was definitely the highlight! @Andrew65

AmyG I had the same Oct pick. 12mo

Super jazzed about this #AuldLangSpine list from @IndoorDame 🙌
I‘ve been meaning to read 19 and 11 for years and will definitely get to them now! 8, 15, and 13 are new to me and look v interesting. I‘m planning to start with possibly 3, 5, and 12, if I can get my hands/ears on them. Off to check Libby/hoopla/and physical copies from my library 📚
#auldlangspine2024 #ALSpine

IndoorDame 2&3 are actually a duology of novellas, so I‘d start with 2. They were on my AuldLangSpine list last year from @SueK But I was impatient and had to read them almost back to back. (edited) 12mo
IndoorDame 15 & 8 were #sundaybuddyread books this year so I have @TheBookHippie to thank for them 12mo
IndoorDame 5 was stacked from a review by @Cinfhen last January and was my first 5 star read of the year 12mo

Chelsea.Poole @IndoorDame I‘ve read 2 and just never did get around to 3 when it was published. It even appeared on my list last year from @TheKidUpstairs so the universe (or @monalyisha at least 😂) really wants me to read second book! 12mo
IndoorDame @Chelsea.Poole 🤣🤣🤣the universe and @monalyisha are wise! 12mo
TheKidUpstairs Oooh, what a great list! I can see why you guys were matched 😊 Of course I love the Becky Chambers, and Fingersmith is such a great read as well! 12mo
Sapphire I am a big Becky Chambers fan based on these books. The concept of a tea monk resonates with me! 12mo

This one started out very slow for me but really picked up at the end. Can definitely see how Simone St James‘ writing was influenced by this. The plot was interesting enough to keep me engaged but I‘m still in a slump so it took a bit for me to get through. Sad I missed out on the #sundaybuddyread discussion but I just couldn‘t keep up.

TheBookHippie ♥️ I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! I hope your slump ends soon! 14mo

I really enjoyed this so much. Is Mary actually Annabel or is she playing the part as she has been set up to do? I would totally read more mysteries by this author.

A little late for #SundayBuddyRead

I‘ve not read Stewart before, but her way of introducing twists is astounding! I was suspicious of a few elements introduced early on, and while my suspicions were later proven correct, the whole journey to the revelations - and more! - was very riveting. Stewart‘s writing also has this slow, mysterious vibe, setting up for something dark and sinister. Great read! #192025 #1961

Read with #sundaybuddyreads and I just wish I‘d managed a print copy. I‘m doing so little reading right now, school continues to kick my ass and just really need to hold a print copy in my hands to get that reading high I need to survive life 🤷🏻‍♀️ that and this ebook copy was not ff track of the print version so it was lost for a good 2 weeks. Otherwise MS is the Master of suspense and she keeps you guessing #ohwhatawickedwebweweave

Read during #Scarathlon for #SundayBuddyRead

This is my first Mary Stewart but I am sure it won‘t be my last. An inspiration to authors like Simone St. James, I very much enjoyed her ability to create a strong lead character & a gothic setting that drew me in immediately. There were several twits to the story that kept me guessing too. Quietly beautiful writing & overall delightful, it will make my favorites list this year.

This month‘s #SundayBuddyRead was Hitchcock, Simone St. James, basically all the names I love! It kept me guessing all month and the ending was so satisfying this week! Looking forward to our chat on Sunday!!! @TheBookHippie #scarathlon #skeletoncrew @Emilymdxn

IndoorDame I know it drives some people crazy, but personally I love nothing more than endings with the tiniest hints of ambiguity like this one. 1y

I had to finish this one and learn the truth behind the main character. The story somewhat reminded me of Jane Eyre though it was a different story. There were some slow parts for me but the last few chapters were exhilarating. I give this 3.5 ⭐️

It‘s been a week ( and it‘s not over) monthly staff meeting on Monday, errands and a swim Tuesday, meet the Creature Wednesday and big strike vote union meeting last night because we haven‘t had a contract for 14 months ( instead of negotiating the ministry keeps deciding new things for us without going through the proper motions 🤷🏻‍♀️ evil or stupid? Jury is still out ) so this was Thursday night and now it‘s a PD Day

kwmg40 I can understand your frustrations with the Ontario government! Good luck. 1y
batsy That looks like an excellent way to relax for a bit. (And the cynic in me is likely to think that most governments are simply evil wrt worker's rights, but they do a good job of putting up a front of stupid 🙃) 1y
