Have I mentioned how much I love the #FairytaleReadingChallenge and how much I love this book. #Mulan was March, but I wanted to drag this book for a long time. The battle scenes were perfect. The characters were brilliant in tricking the villain. Loved this book. @Charityann

I really enjoyed this retelling of the Mulan story. It felt very well researched, giving the story a strong sense of place. The Chinese words and names were a bit confusing at first, but once the story got going, I hardly noticed them. The story was fast-paced and filled with adventure. Lots of plot twists and surprises. A fun read! ⬇️

julieclair Thanks, @Charityann , for hosting the #FairyTaleReadingChallenge. I never would have chosen to read this book on my own without the #Mulan prompt.

I really enjoyed this YA version of Mulan. You can definitely tell that the author did a lot of research about the history because the details really bring this story to life.

Full of adventure, fun, and lots of heart.

I could not resist getting the magnolia sword after seeing it posted by @MadelineMcCrae ❤ also took the chance to get the original Mulan version with other stories to make a great experience with it. Looking forward to reading these for sure as been after the original for the while. Love this tale. Happy reading everyone 📚❤📖 #legend #warrior #honor #chinese #tradition #mulan

I can‘t believe it took me so long to finish The Magnolia Sword! I think I started off skeptical but by the end I was so hooked and invested in the story. Sherry Thomas put so much thought and love into her research of the 400‘s AD China for the backdrop, and every scene was action packed without sacrificing character growth. There were times the characters felt a tad bland, but often the plot and writing made up for it. And that romance!😍

I haven't yet watched the live action Mulan movie, but I've been very curious about the actual legend of Mulan for quite a while. I'm so glad I read this book! The story was riveting and the descriptions were perfect. I was cheering for Mulan and Kai the entire time, and for a moment, thought there might not be a happy ending.

Sherry Thomas books are always wins for me, but this was such a great tale of courage, familial (and ahem non-familial) relationships. And you know, spoiler, Mulan does end up a great hero.
Content note: war and associated injuries and death.

"But if the Wall kept proving itself useless, why did more of it get built?"

"Because it seemed an obvious solution. It made both the emperor and the people think something was being done. And we have all, at some point, confused doing something--anything--with actually solving the problem."

That was really fun! This Mulan was a really relatable protagonist, as she faces her own prejudices, doubts & fears throughout the story. Her romance with Kai was cute, if not 1000% swoony like in Thomas‘s romance novels. The pacing of the plot was a bit choppy, with fairly predictable twists & a too-neat ending. But what I liked best were the themes & discussions around how victors of a battle often get to shape the historical narrative. ★★★★☆.

Really enjoyed this one! I haven‘t read YA fantasy in a while, and my interest was peaked by the title. This was a brand new book to the HS library I work at now and I just had to borrow it! Of the other few Mulan retellings I have read, this is my favorite.

Here‘s my TBR list for the weekend. Decided to participate in the #24hourreadathon (you‘re not trying to read all 24 hrs, just devoting a big chunk of the day to reading) today too, since I‘m already doing #24B4monday!😁📚📖 I‘m already in the middle of the first three, so I want to finish those and then knock out my #bookspin titles.

Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 5y

Really enjoyed this version of Mulan. 5/5 from me.
I think it would've been a one sitting read, if I had started earlier in the day.

484AD China with a baddess Mulan, what's not to love.
Get to see her in all her fury and see her in her China.
A retelling I was looking for
