Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference | Malcolm Gladwell
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

It‘s been a semester or two since I‘ve taken a course from my favorite professor, Mr Gladwell :) Although this syllabus was created in 2000, it was easy to replace the emergence of email with the use of social media and the example of The Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and apply his research from 20+ years ago to the world today.

This was an informative listen on how social epidemics start. I enjoyed listening about how children prefer to watch Blue‘s Clues than Sesame Street, the suicides of young Micronesian men, and the school shooting epidemic.

This flood in my in laws basement was my tipping point. Honest to god every time they go to the cottage something happens. Malcolm Gladwell is easy to listen to and I‘m looking forward to listening all of his books

Megabooks Oh no!! I‘m so sorry! 3y
mcctrish Thx @Megabooks I actually called a restoration company to come deal with it ( new floors in another part of the basement and warranties to deal with from the last disaster) 3y

MicheleinPhilly Our neighborhood got HAMMERED about a week ago with monsoon like rain. And it turns out we had a clogged drain on top of that. 😩 Hope your in-laws get sorted soon. 3y
mcctrish @MicheleinPhilly the first group that sucked up the water came yesterday today a crew with fans has come, furniture is moved and rugs are getting cleaned/rolled/something tomorrow an appointment to look at grading by window where this came in as a lot of rain expected this week again 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y

I very late to the Malcolm Gladwell bandwagon

ncsufoxes I love Malcolm Gladwell‘s books. I also love his podcast Revisionist History. The only problem is a end up with more things I want to read after listening to him. 4y
mcctrish @ncsufoxes Jessica MG has been on my radar forever and I just watched a spot on him and his podcast on CBS Sunday Morning and that was the ‘tipping point‘ for me 🤣🤣 now I need to read all the books and listen to the podcast 4y

My #bookspin and first book of the year was..okay. The message was clear and very interesting, definitely thought provoking in instances. However, much of the book including some language used felt a little dated. To be fair, it was written quite some time ago. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ included in the picture is my new baby Bruce! I adopted him last weekend and he is such a sweet boy 😻

melissajayne My first bookspin for this year was a bail. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I had similar feelings when I read another of Gladwell's books - an interesting premise & some useful information, but also felt like it could use a little update & that a few of his theories didn't actually have much to back them up. It was thought-provoking, though, & at the time I had ever really considered the way that we are making instinctive judgments/decisions all the time. 4y

Like Gladwell‘s other books, there is just so much information as to why things hit epidemic proportions, from viruses to skateboarding shoes to young male suicides in Micronesia. Why are some advertising campaigns more effective? Why do you know who Paul Revere is and not William Dawes? Why do preschoolers learn more from Blue‘s Clues than Sesame Street? As always fascinating. I would love to see a social media-era update on this one! 4.5⭐️🎧

TrishB Am I really ignorant not to know either of those people? Or is it US based? 4y
Megabooks @TrishB the reason people outside the US may know it is the poem by Longfellow https://poets.org/poem/paul-reveres-ride Basically the continental army got some intel that the British were about to mount an attack around Boston. Dawes rode south and didn‘t warn the right people and wasn‘t listened to. Revere is now a huge revolutionary figure and managed to tell the right people and Gladwell posits why Revere‘s ride was more successful ⬇️ 4y
Megabooks @TrishB Revere was better at having acquaintances. Gladwell calls these people “connectors.” (edited) 4y

TrishB 👍🏻 there is nothing taught in British history that makes the Brits looks bad!! US history was only ever taught regarding the civil rights movement. The US revolution didn‘t happen in British history 😁 4y
Megabooks @TrishB well, at least I‘ve heard you‘re pretty much in agreement over evolution, so that‘s definitely better than here. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
TrishB 😂😂 never much debate about that one. Pro choice pretty low key too. Having same issues about statues etc though. People seem to like statues more than civil rights. 4y

Malcolm pressed his finger on the scales of my constant battle between beloved authors once more. This is exactly what the subtitle says, how small things make a big difference. Who are Mavins, connectors and more? And what's the difference? And are you one of them?
The answer is between Malcolm's pages as always with fascinating detail and stories shared.

I finally finished it. Though it was written years ago, the ideas Gladwell writes about are applicable today. It gives a lot to think about and a new perspective to word-of-mouth marketing.

A book about how a small change can make a big difference. Tipping point touches on the triggers to epidemics, the type of people/factors that create massive changes. It's a short book but very enjoyable.

DS9 3.04 #Equilibrium The crew has Sunday dinner! Epi focusses on Trill culture & biology and how memories create identity. A procedural mystery, follows clues that could indicate Jadzia is going insane or that something was done to her. The answer has long term consequences for Jadzia and Ezri. More b&w morally than most other DS9 episodes.

Equilibrium is an economics concept, but Tipping Point is at least interesting.

keithmalek All of Gladwell's books are interesting. I'll give him that. The problem is that they're also wrong and poorly thought out. 6y
tournevis @keithmalek He wasn't *wrong* about tipping points in popular culture, but he's a lot of flash and much less substance, that's for sure. 6y
Megabooks It sets up for Field of Fire, which I liked a lot better than this episode. The hug in the symbiont pool was a bit lame. Can I get Odo to stir my cake batter, though?? (edited) 6y
tournevis @Megabooks Auberjonois's performance in comedy is always so perfect! 6y

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. This was an interesting read, the author exploring how small changes in statistical values can reap huge shifts in outcomes. I feel I need to re-read to let certain aspects absorb better but overall, a good and quick read.

Interesting look at how social epidemics start – at that particular moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Gladwell also talks about the particular personality types who are “natural pollinators” of new ideas and trends; i.e. the people who create the phenomenon of word of mouth. Well written, although I enjoyed "Outliers: The Story of Success" a bit better. 3 stars

The tipping point is the moment right before an idea goes viral. Gladwell give many examples of moment when good marketing found that tipping point. Interesting premise, but feels very dated in 2018.

The subject matter is very interesting but I felt some dry points that I had to push past. This is possibly because I was reading this during the college semester amidst exams and assignments instead of on a break. However, lot‘s of great examples and pop-cultural references given along with an interesting look at what makes a trend stick or a what makes a virus spread, plus many other examples and analogies in between. I‘m glad I read this book.

eddy1133 You might be right. He does not rush the point in any of his books, but his prosenis so smooth you won't eve notice.I have read 4 of his books, but I have read many negative reviews about his latest "Talking to Strangers". 5y

One of Gladwell's older books, The Tipping Point ages poorly. While I enjoyed the Sesame Street chapter (It was, after all, about Muppets and preK education), the chapter which seemed to excuse the actions of Bernie Goetz really pissed me off. The inherent racism of Goetz's attack was ignored to add credence to Gladwell's viral theory. Perhaps ignoring racism in 2006 is what led today's political climate? #marchintoreading #recentnonfiction

Abby-J Clarification: I'm not blaming this book for our uncomfortable political climate. I, however, was shocked that, only 11 years ago, an essay about a white man shooting four black men on a subway train only mentioned the white man's racism once in 70(ish) pages. This seems especially noteworthy as Gladwell is, himself, a black man. (edited) 8y
