Ghost Summer: Stories | Tananarive Due
34 posts | 36 read | 68 to read
Nominated for an NAACP Image Award! Named one of "The LA Times" Best Books of 2015! "In these extraordinary tales, American Book Award-winner Due ("My Soul to Take") uses a clear-eyed view of history to explain (but never excuse) the present." - "Publishers Weekly "(Starred) Stephen King says, "Ms. Due accomplishes the hardest thing of all with deceptive ease, creating characters we care about on their most human level." Whether weaving family life and history into dark fiction or writing speculative Afrofuturism, American Book Award winner and Essence bestselling author Tananarive Due's work is both riveting and enlightening. In her debut collection of short fiction, Due takes us to Gracetown, a small Florida town that has both literal and figurative ghost; into future scenarios that seem all too real; and provides empathetic portraits of those whose lives are touched by Otherness. Featuring an award-winning novella and fifteen stories-one of which has never been published before-GHOST SUMMER: STORIES, is sure to both haunt and delight. The title novella, "Ghost Summer," won a Kindred Award from the Carl Brandon Society (originally published in "The Ancestors"). This collection includes "Patient Zero," "The Lake," "The Knowing," "Herd Immunity," and many other stories. With an Introduction by Nalo Hopkinson and an Afterword by Steven Barnes.

These stories are beautiful and haunting. I loved every single one of them, but the title story was by far my favorite. This was my first journey into the writing of Tananarive Due, and it won't be my last. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I caught a serious bout of the dumbs 🤪 last weekend and completely forgot about August‘s #24B4Monday readathon. To start my first day of a week long staycation, I‘m hauling myself and my #TuesdayTBR stack out to the hammock and get my read on. 📚📖😎

It‘s June 1 - short story month is now over. I wasn‘t able to host the short story swap this year 😢 but I want to hear what stories you‘re reading. Share your favorite short stories you read this month & tag me. #shortstorymonth

I‘ve read the tagged collection, The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo, and some of Paris Stories by Mavis Gallant.

This short story is part of the Ghost Box collection edited by Patton Oswalt. Today‘s story is “The Lake” and first appeared in the tagged collection. So very creepy- teacher Abbie LaFleur takes a new job in Florida - buys a home on a natural lake where the locals know you don‘t swim in the summer. No one tells Abbie and she swims all summer long- and then....! So far this is such a fun collection!

A truly outstanding collection of speculative often spooky short stories! Themes include ghost hunting, zombies, post-apocalyptic survival, werewolves, and other paranormal realities. My favourites were the title story (wonderful blend of childhood ghost haunting and the memories of racism) and "Danger Word," a zombie story that terrified me. A few stories felt like they ended when they only had just started, but this is a pretty minor criticism.

Can't believe I haven't read anything by this author before! It's a great collection of black speculative / horror short stories. The one I finished last night had me legit scared to turn the light off. #BlackBooks

I may have gone a little overboard with the holds for #HalloweenReads that have recently been recommended to me. Anyone read any of these? Alternately, you can also give me more recs #SpookyBooks that are paranormal and not too scary (a la Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House). That's how I got these suggestions over on Twitter.

I need to stop reading this while I‘m home alone. Read two super unsettling zombie/plague stories out of here right as a thunderstorm rolled in. Now cuddling a super unhelpful cat watching Disney movies waiting for someone else to come home haha

These stories really speak to the heart in a very simple way. Though technically a "horror" book, these tales define it in a very loose way- everything from actual ghosts/monsters to the legacy of slavery to losing a loved one make an appearance. A really fantastic collection!

The weather feels a lot like what would happen if ennui were sentient and declared winter its favorite season. So for this dreary morning I'm enjoying some comforting soup, cookies, and reading more of Tananarive Due's stories about people trying to deal with the unsettling. I do believe I have yet another favorite author. So far Due's writing is amazing. 🍵🍪📖 #BooksFromSteinbeck

I really enjoyed these stories quite a bit. There was just the right amount of creepy and weird blended with themes of loss, isolation, etc. to make this a great fall pick (nevermind that "summer" is in the title)!

I loved every story--Due's writing is beautiful & her ability to create an immersive story within the first few paragraphs of a tale is bananas. I enjoyed the stories set in Gracetown the most & missed it once they moved to different territory. The other stories were just as good, but there's something about Gracetown that makes what's already creepy even more unnerving. Due is officially someone whose work I'll keep looking for.

Tis the season for spooky #shortstories! Creepy stories: LADY AUTHOR EDITION.

🌒💀🗝🎶

Not all of these are horror. They're mostly atmospheric, so folks that just want some moody seasonal fall reading can probably handle them. Ghost Summer was excellent, as is anything by Tananarive Due! Some might show up for our October readalong for @LitsyFeministBookClub. 😉

#Recommendsday: Perfect for summer. The stories take place in Gracetown, a haunted Florida town. The quality of each story is consistent but has diverse themes like mythical monsters, werewolves, viruses, ghosts, & other supernatural phenomena. Due shows deep emotional understanding of humanity as she weaves historical elements of slavery & racial commentary into her stories. Her writing is incisive, suspenseful, & engaging. 🌤 #ReadWomen #WNDB
