The Pocket Roverandom
The Pocket Roverandom | John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Christina Scull, Wayne G. Hammond
23 posts | 37 read | 19 to read
J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy story about the adventures of a bewitched toy dog, written before The Hobbit. While on holiday in 1925, four-year-old Michael Tolkien lost his beloved toy dog on the beach at Filey in Yorkshire. To console him, his father, J.R.R. Tolkien, improvised a story about Rover, a real dog who is magically transformed into a toy and is forced to seek out the wizard who wronged him in order to be returned to normal. This charming tale, peopled by a sand-sorcerer and a terrible dragon, by the king of the sea and the Man-in-the-Moon, was Tolkien's first full-length children's book, written before The Hobbit. Now, nearly 90 years later, the adventures of Rover - or, for reasons that become clear in the story, Roverandom - are published in this delightful pocket hardback edition. Rich in wit and wordplay, Roverandom is edited and introduced by Tolkien experts Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond, and includes Tolkien's own delightful illustrations.

This book reminded me of the book Edward Tulane. Edward is a toy just like Roverandom who goes on a big adventure and learns many lessons.

Roverrandom by J.R.R Tolkien is a speculative fiction book written in 1992. It is based off of a story that the authors father told him when he lost his toy on vacation. Roverandom follows a dog who is turned into a toy by a wizard and goes on many adventures, including living on the moon. Roverandom searches for the wizard who turned him, and learns many lessons along the way.

4✨ What a cute story. A story Tolkien wrote for his son who lost his little toy dog. The story follows Rover on an adventure when he is lost by his little boy. It‘s so cute and something similar happened to me as a kid. #FellowshipofTolkien @Daisey @JazzFeathers

"I was the first dog that was ever called Rover, thousands of years ago-so you must have been called Rover after me! I was a Rover, too! I never would stop anywhere, or belong to anyone before I came here. I did nothing but run away from the time I was a puppy; and I kept on running and roving until one fine morning - a very fine morning, with the sun in my eyes - I fell over the world's edge chasing a butterfly."

This was a lovely sweet children‘s book which reminds me so much of the stories my mum read me. It had just the right amount of fairy tale whimsy and all the time I was listening I could imagine myself age 7 or 8 giggling along and finding it exciting. I‘ve never read a child a bedtime story (I‘m interested in trying but never had the necessary child to hand) but I reckon this would be a perfect bedtime story

I‘m moving next week, so I‘m working on packing all the things that spark joy! Y‘know, I have so many nice empty boxes still saved from the last move, but I‘m finding almost all of them are too large to stuff heavy books in...😕

Lmstraubie Good luck with your move! 6y
Tamra Having recently moved, liquor store boxes are perfect for books and usually can be found in abundance! 6y
hgrimes @Tamra They are! I used to make trips to Trader Joe‘s for them, they always had a jackpot. I might stop by later if I can‘t figure this out! 6y
hgrimes @Lmstraubie Thanks! This one should be pretty quick and easy. 6y
Amiable We just moved last month. The entirety of my book collection (all 28 boxes) was moved in paper boxes from WB Mason. Best boxes ever! Sturdy and they have lids. 6y

#YearOfTolkien

My loot yesterday at the Tolkien exibition. Less than l wanted to, but still not bad.
I couldn't resist those adorable little editions. I already own both stories, but only in ltalian.
I almost didn't get the earrings, but then l thought those were the only things special of the exibition and l'd regret it if l didn't get them.
Didn't get the catalogo. Too expensive and too heavy (airplane, you know). I'll get it online.

InLibrisVeritas I would adore going to a Tolkien exhibition, that seems like it would be so much fun! 6y
BookwormAHN I would also love to go 💜 6y
JazzFeathers @BookwormAHN @InLibrisVeritas lf you have the slightest possibility, go gals! It's a one-in-a-life opportunity. Don't miss it! 6y

BarbaraJean I‘m so glad you posted about the exhibition! I‘ll be in the UK in October and it looks like it‘ll still be on while I‘m in the country—now I just need tweak the itinerary just a little bit!! So exciting! 6y
JazzFeathers @quirkyreader The maps are beautiful. I saw the original of the Wilderland at the exibition 😊 6y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l almost didn't buy the earrings because the were kind of out of my badget. But in the end they were the only exibition raleted items l'd got (the catalogue was too expensive and too heavy, l'll get it online). So l got them 😊 6y
JazzFeathers @BarbaraJean lf you may at all, try to go in the morning. It was crowded in the afternoon. And check for the Tolkien and CS Lewis walking tour. They only offer it one day a month, but you may be liky like me 😉 6y
BarbaraJean @JazzFeathers Thank you—I will! That‘s good to know! 6y

Started my birthday re-read and re-watch of my Tolkien collection today.

This was the story that showed me the way to Middle Earth. A little children's story about a dog and his adventures in space and under the sea. Eight year old me read this countless times.

MinDea Are you going to join in on #ookbookclub that @TricksyTail runs? I am going to try to get Equal Rites to join this month. Do you have that one? Next is Mort (which you already read and loved) but you can join in on the discussions! 7y
hgrimes @MinDea I don‘t have Equal Rites. Is Reaper Man up after Mort? I‘m planning to start on that one pretty soon. Thanks so much for the head‘s up and invite!! 7y
MinDea I just tagged you in the full schedule of #ookbookclub 7y
hgrimes @MinDea Thanks! I will join in the discussion this month! 7y

Really enjoyed this little story. I particularly liked the parts on the moon. There is mystery and epic and poetry more than in the rest of the story.

Daisey I enjoyed all of this, but I found the moon parts the most interesting and magical as well. 7y

I'm really enjoying this little story. There is a strong sense of fairy tale, and still there are passages of pure poetry.
I love the description of the moon. So imaginative.

Well, apparently my copy of Tales of the Perilous Realm is very different from the copy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa used to make our schedule for the readalog. So l had to integrate some parts 😊

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s getting harder with so many editions available. I know @BookwormM is still reading The Unfinished Tales because her edition was so different from ours. After this one maybe we‘ll wait a few days before we start the next to give people some catch-up time. 7y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds like a good idea 😊 7y
Daisey It‘s definitely confusing with different collections of the shorter works. So, is this book just the story of Roverandom or does it include other short stories? 7y
See All 6 Comments
JazzFeathers @Daisey lt is just Roverandom with the notes. Then l have Wutton Major, Ham and Niggle on the same collection as Bombadil, and l have Of Fairy Sories on another collection of essey. Yeah, scattered evereywhere, but l think l now have everything 😊 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers Well at least you‘ll know which one we are reading and when to read at the same time. 7y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Oh, it's fine with me, no problem 😁 7y

This is a really sweet little book that Tolkien wrote for his son about a puppy who bit the wrong wizard's trousers and became a toy by way of enchantment. He makes friends and travels to fascinating places before finding the wizard again and asking to be changed back to how he was before. This is a great book for children and adults alike! #LitsyAtoZ

Roverandom is so little-known, but it's beautiful! Tolkien wrote it for his son Michael. It's a fantastic romp about a dog trying to break a wizard's curse, and it goes to the moon to the ocean floor, and through several proto-LoTR elements. And of course, the writing awesome.
