White Bird is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. The story is about a young Jewish girl during the Holocaust, with the lessons from her story being tied to the modern-day refugee crisis in the US. It would be a good introduction to the Holocaust for children and tweens who enjoyed Wonder.

I had one issue with the book, which I‘ll put in the comments under a spoiler tag.

This was my #doublespin pick and #ReadVisually pick for #SummerFun

candority I am disappointed that Palacio chose to kill Julien. Disabled characters in children‘s books are often miraculously cured or killed by the end of the story, which sends a terrible message to readers. The fact that when he died he was “free of his body… free of all his earthly limitations” is also ableist, and if Palacio really couldn‘t have come up with a different ending for Julien‘s story, she could have at least removed those few words. 4y

Tagged is one of the five books my oldest has on indefinite loan from the local library. We don't discuss politics in detail around him, and this panel prompted him to Google “trump's zero tolerance policy“ on his phone. He comes out of his room angrily asking “we're separating families?“ Sigh. He's still 6 yrs from voting age. These discussions are hard, and I wish he only needed to worry about kid stuff. #raisingreaders

Texreader My daughter is so upset that she will be a few weeks shy of voting age to vote in the presidential election. 5y
Slajaunie This is not a new policy. It was done under the last few Presidents just not publicized. @Texreader (edited) 5y
SleepyDragon Slajaunie - That statement is not entirely accurate. The zero tolerance policy, including separating children from parents and putting them in concentration camps with horrendous conditions is uniquely trump. Also,I just recently read where a large percentage of people being deported contracted Covid-19 while being imprisoned in the US. This is not the platform for political propaganda, and I will thank you for not commenting further. 5y

R. J. Palacio's White Bird is a lovely graphic novel, a prequel of sorts to her brilliant book Wonder, one of the books I've loved sharing both with my students and my children. White Bird tells the story of Sara, the grandmother of Julian who was the boy in Wonder who led the bullying. In this new novel, Julian has moved on, has learned his lesson, and is now eager to learn the story of his French grandmother. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod After the framing of the novel sets up their video call, the book flashes back to Sara's childhood during World War II when she and her Jewish family lived in France. Sara tells Julian of her family's initial sense of security as the Nazis encroach on their hometown and their gradual realization that they, too, are in danger.⠀⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod The book--both the story and the art--is just beautiful, and it doesn't flinch from telling the truth about the horrors of the war while also presenting them in a way that is appropriate for children to read. I am going to share this with both of my boys, big fans of Wonder and of Auggie and Me (the sequel in novellas).⠀⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod Have you read White Bird? What other graphic novels confront this same subject matter? My mind immediately went to Art Spiegalman's Maus. Are there others I should add to my list? 5y
TheBookHippie Anne Frank Diary graphic novel, Hidden, A bag of marbles, the search, Lily Rene: Escape Artist, Resistance-Defiance-Victory.. 5y

Have you all read this? You need to read this. I had been carrying it around and it starting it for weeks and I have major regrets! This story was BEAUTIFUL. It is fiction but goodness it felt real. I cried several times. I‘ll be forcing this on my kids now. 😍

Scochrane26 I haven‘t read it, but I loved Wonder. 5y
MelissaSue81 @Scochrane26 - I loved Wonder too, as did both my girls. The girls read Auggie and Me but I had not. This is apparently based on the Julian chapter in Auggie and Me. 5y

This was a truly amazing piece of work and art. The only reference it had to Wonder was the character Julien, the bully. The story is about Julien's grandmother and how she lived through the Nazi regime. Yes I cried and it was worth it. The illustrations were great and some (bluebells) were just stunning. I really love the story from beginning to end. Definitely worth a read.

Read cover to cover in one sitting... 4☆
Everything is cyclical. Yet, WW2 was not so long ago that we have forgotten. How are we in a situation of repetition so soon? Perfect book for older kids through adults.

This is the story of a young girl in Nazi-occupied France. It's a story about standing up with love and kindness during a time of war. It's something our country's youth needs right now. Buy it & gift it to an important young person in your life. Buy it, read it and pass it on to a local classroom or school. Check it out from your library. Both the #audiobook (thanks, Libro.fm and Penguin Random House Audio) and the printed copy are astounding.

Highly recommend this beautiful middle grade graphic novel - an Anne Frank like World War II story that has meaning for today‘s society.
