White Bird is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. The story is about a young Jewish girl during the Holocaust, with the lessons from her story being tied to the modern-day refugee crisis in the US. It would be a good introduction to the Holocaust for children and tweens who enjoyed Wonder.

I had one issue with the book, which I‘ll put in the comments under a spoiler tag.

candority I am disappointed that Palacio chose to kill Julien. Disabled characters in children‘s books are often miraculously cured or killed by the end of the story, which sends a terrible message to readers. The fact that when he died he was “free of his body… free of all his earthly limitations” is also ableist, and if Palacio really couldn‘t have come up with a different ending for Julien‘s story, she could have at least removed those few words. 5y

Loved this adaptation - 5 ⭐. Loved the portrayal of the relationship between Elinor & Marianne, and also (not pictured), the death of Mr Dashwood sets up the story perfectly. Also, does the drawing of Colonel Brandon remind you of Alan Rickman?

Scared because numbers keep rising and I feel unsafe returning to work with a manager who thinks this is just type. I will be ok but miss Maryland and a job that I loved! 5y

This graphic novel by Jeff Lemire deals with a grown son facing his past and losing his father when he was young. He finds himself confronting his grief on the eve of becoming a father himself. This is a stand alone graphic novel with a lot of heart. I love that the story is all in black and white. 💚
