Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy
Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy | Louis A Meyer
35 posts | 63 read | 19 to read
Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS "Dolphin" is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of eighteenth-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas. There's only one problem: Jacky is a "girl." And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret. This could be the adventure of her life--if only she doesn't get caught. . . .

Happy early Halloween! Celebrating this weekend at @Saknicole annual murder mystery party. This year is pirate themed! My character is inspired by the main character of the tagged book and Jim from Our Flag Means Death. My look is loosely inspired by Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean.

My first audiobook was the tagged book, narrated by the late Katherine Kellgren ❤️ I feel in love with this way to read books ever since! 🎧

I listened to the audio and loved the accent. I think it was a Cockney accent (had to look that up!). I quite enjoyed this and it gets the extra ¼ star for the audio. The story was fun, too. It‘s odd, but whether I listen to or read adventure, I tend to not pay as much attention to the adventure parts. Odd, I know. But I still quite liked the story and I will be continuing the series

1. Well for the new year what‘s new - dealing with a new work environment possibly... details are slowly coming to us right now for February. It‘s a bit stressful.
2. My husband who really was there for me today and my dogs who snuggle me and give me love unconditionally. And my #litsylove family who keep me going with positive letters.
The book I tagged cheers me up- I‘m almost done with my reread of the series

Thanks @bookish_wookish

I‘m loving my reread of this series I tagged and I‘m reading them on audio with a friend highly recommend!

1. Well the first part is obvious but the spelling of girl is goil like a New York accent from my days of writing Newsies fanfiction.
2. Thankful to have good health, two working adults in our home and the option to work remote right now. My snuggly dogs too

Wow what a month! I read 46 books! I shared my physical books earlier, here are my audio and ebooks.

Some stats.
• 8 TBR
• 34 library books
• 26 audiobooks
• 7 ebooks
• 11 graphic novels
• 4 rereads

I reread the first two Bloody Jack books and I‘ll be continuing the next few months I own all the audio on Audible!

I discovered a series - a graphic novel series called Scalped set on an Native American Reservation - very gritty and good.

AmyG I read 46 books in a year. Wow! 🙌🏻 4y

I never wanted to read this book under its original cover, but when the paperback came out it piqued my interest.

I love this book except for the kite thing. Strong female character, however I could see people taking issue with the main male character because of LGBTQ issues in today‘s climate, however this is not an LGBTQ issues book.
If you want more info on what that means tag me please.

After being tossed out into the gritty streets of London, a young orphan named Mary finds a family of sorts with a gang of beggars. Alas, tragedy strikes again and Mary poses as a boy to join a ship‘s crew. “Jacky” goes on a rollercoaster of adventures. A rollicking middle grade read. Read-alike: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

Audiobook: Katherine Kellgren makes this story come alive, not even exaggerating. Listening to her read took me back to story time readings by favorite teachers or librarians. An absolutely amazing job.

As for the story itself, I loved it. I generally dislike YA, especially with any romantic elements, but this story worked for me. Jack/Mary reminds me so much of Anne Shirley--earnest naivety with a relentless can-do personality. 😊

A random result from the library this morning as I looked for an audiobook to listen to while I crocheted.

I'm so picky about audiobooks that I tend to go for nonfiction. However, I have a fondness for non-American English speakers so... I had to give it a try. Plus, it's about a girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to get work on a ship. A high seas adventure!

I enjoyed this story. Although I frequently read YA books this one was a little too simplistic for my tastes. Even so it was a good read and although I won‘t be following Mary‘s story further I do have a curiosity about what further adventures she had.

🎧 Today, we were informed of the shocking news that narrator Katy Kellgren passed away last night after a four-year battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Somehow it‘s fitting to queue up a series for which the author and she were both well and deservedly acclaimed for. Thank you Katy for leaving a great legacy. We will miss you. 😢

CrowCAH OMG is this information for real? She‘s a phenomenal narrator! (edited) 7y

Love this book (except for the kite, that was stupid) and find it to be a great history lesson. "Jack". Mary Jackey Fabre didn't start out wanting to be a feminist. She just wanted to be a girl, with plenty of food to eat. And instead she becalmed an adventurer learning that being a girl doesn't have to hold you back. #feministfriday #awesomeautumnbooks

Once again a cover change from book one to paperback/book 2.

A swashbuckling adventure on the high seas! Mary "Jacky" Faber leaves her life scrounging on the streets of London by disguising herself as a boy and becoming a crew member of The Dolphin, a ship in His Majesty's Navy hunting down pirates. It's actually a lot better than I thought it would be, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Had to add a fiction choice for #shepersisted as well. Jacky Faber is a young girl who faces extreme hardship but always looks for a way to survive. This is a terrific series (which starts to get a little silly around book five or so, but well worth it up until then!). #marchintoreading

#boyinthetitle #feistyfeb

Somehow, none of the books on the shelf had "boy", but I have read several that include "boy" in the title and this is one of them.

A great series about growing up, making friends, and finding glory in being yourself!

Listen to the audiobooks, the narrator is amazing!!!! Katherine Kellgren ? can go between character voices like that "snap", immediately recognizable. And she sings! And can speak different languages!

KerriNTurner I love this book! Haven't tried the audio version though, and I hear so many good things about it I might have to. 8y

I love the adventure of this book and series. I do t like the end with the kite. That part took the realism away. But Jacky Farber is a "woman" who sticks with you. (Photo from a book cover I have not seen before). #booktober #unforgetablewomen #day20
