The book is beautifully written and flows well. The reader definitely gets a feeling for life at the dump, and although the ending has a fairy tale quality to it, I found this story to be thought provoking and uplifting. The Rent Collector is one of my favorite reads of the year.

While the writing left a little to be desired the story and the messages the book portrays are important. Learning about how the people of Cambodia live in Stung Meanchey (the dump) and how resilient they are gives you hope for society. Although there was very little about the Khmer Rouge - it is always sad to read about - especially when we see the same in other countries to this day.

Another 3x3 grid with a 5* read - can‘t beat that. I‘m not disappointed that I don‘t always love my monthly Reese and Jenna reading assignments. They challenge me!

5* = Loved It, want non-reader IRL friends to read. I do/will own a physical copy. A+
4*= I liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3*=Meh, no need to discuss. Average C
2*=Nope D

Megabooks I‘m getting White Ivy from the library because of the mixed reviews. We‘ll see...glad I didn‘t get it from BOTM. 4y
marleed @Megabooks it‘s definitely a book you need to be in the right mood for. Perhaps after the holidays, when I‘m down for darker reading, I would have appreciated it differently. I‘m a serious mood reader. 4y

This is a beautiful story, a work of fiction using real people who forged a living in the largest municipal dump, Stung Meanchey, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is a testament that as avid readers we are better than we might otherwise be without our stories. It is heart wrenching. It is hopeful. It is humanity. I will never forget this book.

Honeybeebooks I have been considering this for book club. This tipped the scale for me. 4y

I really enjoyed this story and learned a lot about life for those that live and work at the dump in Cambodia. The story within a story is well-woven and highlights all the good things that come from reading and books.

Living in the largest trash dump in Cambodia, a family tries to make a better life for themselves. Although the writing was not great, the story itself was very interesting. I am conflicted on the idea that the characters are real people but the story is made up. I would rather read their true story. Despite my misgivings, it did make me ugly cry at midnight as I finished it so it ends up as a pick.

Grab tissues‼️‼️While the writing was uneven, this heartfelt story of resilience, hope, redemption and hidden treasures was an absolute stunner. “It doesn‘t matter where you live, but HOW you live.” Based on actual individuals living in Stung Meanchey, Cambodia‘s municipal waste dump.

#GetMovin My current read features Sang Ly a wife /mother living in Stung Meanchey, Cambodia‘s largest municipal dump. She‘s a #fighter willing to do whatever it takes to feed her family and save her ill son. It‘s a novel based on actual people, the story is an eye opener but I‘m not impressed with the writing. It‘s a short read, so I won‘t bail. Sang Ly pictured above ( what a gorgeous smile!) ✳️I‘ve finished the book & Im pleasantly surprised❣️

I wandered into an independent bookstore in Columbus, Georgia about a year ago. The man working there recommended "The Rent Collector," saying it was the best book he had read so far that year. I took his word for it and bought the book. Today I finished reading it for the second time! It is really good, and I highly recommend it to y'all. It shows how literacy can change lives and give hope.

Read it! You won't regret it.

This is the story of Sang Ly, a young mother, who is fighting to survive by picking through garbage in Cambodia's largest municipal dump. She survives by scavenging recyclable items from the trash. To complicate matters, she has a sick son and can barely afford the exorbitant cost of his medicine. I love reading stories that take place in different countries and about different cultures. I think this is the first one I have read from Cambodia.

I am loving this audiobook so much. I started it as part of my "exploring other cultures" reading initiative, focusing on books without a white protagonist. It's giving me Man Called Ove vibes ... I love cranky older characters who are inherently good. Beautiful story telling and wonderful premise. #notawhiteprotagonist

Definitely a pick! The set is in municipal waste dump in Cambodia. People live and work here because the dump is a better place then province for a living. The dump is always on fire, there no clean water, their homes are just three wall shacks, there is food deficiency and theirs bodies are unhealthy. But the book not about the straggles. It is about that humanity and literature can do in such place to enlight lives.

I love when I get #bookmail! When I saw that this book takes place at a dump, it didn't sound too appealing. Then I looked closer and saw that though the book is a work of fiction, it's based on a real place and real people. The signed bookplate by the author and signed bookmark by the MC is a nice touch too!
