I‘ve decided to read Ivanhoe since Jonathon Darcy is reading it at Juliet Tilney‘s suggestion and love of all things Sir Walter Scott in The Perils of Lady Catherine De Bourgh

Ivanhoe was published in 1819, and takes place in medieval times, so there's a lot of old language, “thee“ “thou“ etc. One major choice that the author made was that there isn't just one main character/narrator, it goes back and forth showing various characters' different experiences, which all connect into one story.

March was actually a pretty solid reading month!! I finished 16 books, kept up with the buddy reads for North & South and The Other Bennet Sister, and moved forward on a couple of series. Cinder and Stay With Me both start new series so even though they are staying on the radar for April, I really want to finish a series before starting a new one!!

April's numbers/bingo board will be posted tomorrow, so still time to share a list if you want ⬇️

Kyndrill This looks really fun!!! I‘ll think I‘ll join next month :) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Kyndrill - Yay!! I added you to the tag list, so you'll get tagged in the morning with April's numbers & bingo board!! 3y

Kyndrill @TheAromaofBooks Ooh, thank you!! I don‘t know if I can make my list in time😄 but if not I‘ll join the next time I can! 3y
Bookzombie I try to resist starting new series too. It‘s hard. Lol. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Kyndrill - Whenever you get a list together, you can jump right in!! And if you change your mind and it's not the challenge for you, just let me know and I can take you back off the tag list haha 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - I'm currently in the middle of something like 6 or 7 different series, and I have the first books in six more on my March/April TBRs! I may be spiraling out of control 😂 3y
Kyndrill @TheAromaofBooks Sounds great, thank you☺️ 3y
Ednica I would love to join Aprils book spin. I‘ll have my list later today. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Ednica - Glad to have you along!! I posted April's numbers today, so just check my profile when you're ready. I'll be sure to add you to the tag list going forward!! 3y

I haven't had a lot of reading time this week, but I did check off my February #BookSpin, which I have been reading as a chapter-a-day. One of my favorite books growing up was The Velvet Room by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. The main characters in that book read Ivanhoe together and I have meant to read it ever since....mission finally accomplished 30 years later 😂 I overall did enjoy this one, but I don't see myself rereading it. It was somewhat ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) slow in spots, and while the anti-Semitism was reflective of the time, it didn't make it any easier to read, especially since it ended up being such a huge part of the book. I actually ended up doing a small bit of side research to try and understand how the Jewish people fit into the culture of England at the time, which was genuinely fascinating. I can see why this became a “hit“ when it was published in 1819, but while I am glad I ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) read it, I mostly want to reread The Velvet Room now!

KCofKaysville @TheAromaofBooks I've started it twice in the past and could never get into it. I did not there was anti-Semitism in it! 3y

sarahbellum Yay, great job! I agree that the anti-Semitism was very hard to read and I wound up going down a bunch of Google rabbit holes for this one. Doubtful I‘ll read it again, but I enjoyed it while it lasted 🙂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @KCofKaysville - It definitely had a slow start! I'm not sure I would have stuck with it if I hadn't just been reading a chapter a day. At the time the book was set, Jews were treated quite horribly, so the story is historically accurate (and it's not written as though it's a good thing or anything), but it did make some sections hard to read! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @sarahbellum - I even had a post-it note stuck in the front of this book to remind me to tag you when I finished it and still forgot! 😂 I was glad to have read this one, but it didn't turn into a new favorite... and I'm not sure I'm going to hunt down any of Sir Walter Scott's other novels, either lol 3y
sarahbellum @TheAromaofBooks haha no worries 🙃. This will probably be my only Scott as well 3y
rabbitprincess Hey, my mum has that same edition! I was trying to read this book for most of last year and gave up around Chapter 21 🤣 3y
TheAromaofBooks @rabbitprincess - I don't blame you!! There were definitely some slow spots in this one. My husband and I can't figure out where this edition actually came from... neither of us remembers acquiring it, yet it's been around as long as we can remember 😂 3y

Y‘all, I finished it! 🙌 Feb #roll100 complete!

My great aunt Millie didn‘t steer me wrong. While I‘m glad I waited to read this until I was older (a lot would have flown over my teenage head), I‘m bummed I can‘t talk to my great aunt about it since she passed away a few years ago.

Not without flaws, I was entertained by this medieval adventure and learned a fair amount about the era. Couldn‘t help but cheer on the wide cast of characters 🙂

sarahbellum @TheAromaofBooks Good luck finishing! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts ☺️ 3y

“‘Will future ages believe that such stupid bigotry ever existed!‘“ Oh, Sir Walter Scott, if you only knew what stupidity was in store for the human race over the course of the 200+ years since you wrote that line 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Less than 100 pages left of Ivanhoe! Basil enjoyed napping in a sunbeam on my lap while I read this morning 😸 #catsoflitsy #caturday

Feb‘s #roll100 picked Ivanhoe for me, so I‘m reading 20 pgs/day to make it easier to finish in a month. It‘s been awhile since I‘ve read something written in the early 1800s or taking place in the Middle Ages, so the smaller chunks are definitely making it easier for my sluggish brain 🤪🐌

Was happy to discover @TheAromaofBooks is also reading Ivanhoe this month!

SRWCF That's not an easy read! Good idea to chunk it out like that. 3y
TheAromaofBooks So far it just feels like all the characters are getting lined up. I hope I can keep all the names straight!! 3y

May 2021 #BookSpinBingo:
#BookSpin: Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott, which I am currently reading 😁
#DoubleSpin: Rather Be the Devil, by Ian Rankin

rubyslippersreads In the #BetsyTacy “high school” books, this is the assigned reading that no one but Betsy wants to read. (I have to admit I‘ve never read it myself. 😏) 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I've always meant to read Ivanhoe. When I was a little girl one of my favorite books was The Velvet Room & they read Ivanhoe as a part of that story, yet I've never gotten to it myself! 4y
rabbitprincess @rubyslippersreads I‘ve read it at least once, maybe twice, but my abiding memories are from the Wishbone TV adaptation 😂 @TheAromaofBooks When I‘m in the right mood, it goes by quickly. Also I am still on my Stardew Valley kick and named my pig after the swineherd Gurth 😂 4y

rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks I love The Velvet Room! I used to check it out of the elementary school library over and over ! Between that and the #bpBetsyTacy connection, I guess I‘ll have to read Ivanhoe 😊 4y
TheAromaofBooks Man, you just can't beat Wishbone! #thebestDarcy 😂 I'm also still on a Stardew Valley kick, which may explain why I didn't get nearly as many books read in April as I usually do!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - The Velvet Room is DEFINITELY due for a reread for me - it's probably been 20 years since I last read it, which is ridiculous considering how many times I read it growing up. Mom had a small, battered Scholastic Book Club paperback copy & now I'm wondering if she still has it, because ideally I want to reread the EXACT same book haha 4y
rabbitprincess @rubyslippersreads I hope you like it when you get to it! @TheAromaofBooks I am surprised by how addictive I find Stardew! It helps me feel accomplished ? « Oh yay I harvested a whole bunch of gold parsnips! » 4y

Joybishoptx Haha! I don't remember particularly liking Ivanhoe. 8y
TheSloanRanger @Joybishoptx The story seems good, I think it's just Scott's style he struggled with - and I think I might be the same. SO. MANY. WORDS. Wonder if he's like Dickens and got paid per word... 8y

Took me a while to get back into the swing of Victorian language and there's quite a bit of anti-Semitism, but overall I enjoyed it. YMMV on whether an original date in the 1800s is enough to forgive said anti-Semitism.

Beholderess On the other hand, Rebecca is pretty much the best character in the book, and compared to her the so-called main characters are pale shadows 8y
Morinen Definitely. She's the only one who gets any detail in her life story. 8y

I am cleaning old books from Ben's family and I found this amazing gem. A postcard of Avenida Atlantica, Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, from Dec 05, 1926.
It's addressed to Ben's grand-uncle Sidney. Finding things like this is one of the many reasons I love old books. I found it an old edition of Ivanhoe, but used other old books for the picture. (The text of the postcard continues in the comment below).

subwayreads "My dear Sidney: -- How are you? Hope well and happy, and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Can you throw a good snowball right here in my garden? How I wish it could be. It is very hot here. With love to you from my husband and Fräulein."
(5/12/1926)
