Broken Places & Outer Spaces
Broken Places & Outer Spaces: Finding Creativity in the Unexpected | Nnedi Okorafor
19 posts | 16 read | 24 to read
A powerful journey from star athlete to sudden paralysis to creative awakening, award-winning science fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor shows that what we think are our limitations have the potential to become our greatest strengths. Nnedi Okorafor was never supposed to be paralyzed. A college track star and budding entomologist, Nnedis lifelong battle with scoliosis was just a bump in her plansomething a simple operation would easily correct. But when Nnedi wakes from the surgery to find she cant move her legs, her entire sense of self begins to waver. Confined to a hospital bed for months, unusual things begin to happen. Psychedelic bugs crawl her hospital walls; strange dreams visit her nightly. Nnedi begins to put these experiences into writing, conjuring up strange, fantastical stories. What Nnedi discovers during her confinement would prove to be the key to her life as a successful science fiction author: In science fiction, when something breaks, something greater often emerges from the cracks. In Broken Places & Outer Spaces, Nnedi takes the reader on a journey from her hospital bed deep into her memories, from her painful first experiences with racism as a child in Chicago to her powerful visits to her parents hometown in Nigeria. From Frida Kahlo to Mary Shelly, she examines great artists and writers who have pushed through their limitations, using hardship to fuel their work. Through these compelling stories and her own, Nnedi reveals a universal truth: What we perceive as limitations have the potential to become our greatest strengthsfar greater than when we were unbroken. A guidebook for anyone eager to understand how their limitations might actually be used as a creative springboard, Broken Places & Outer Spaces is an inspiring look at how to open up new windows in your mind.

“The cracks the storyteller in me required weren‘t there. It was because of and after the Breaking and my subsequent journey that I acquired this part of my self.”

A short non-fiction book about how Okorafor's paralysis from a back surgery for MS leads to her taking on writing. This was amazing and absolutely gorgeous.

A very interesting, very short memoir about the spinal surgery gone wrong that left Nnedi Okorafor temporarily paralyzed and alter the course of her life from pre-med athlete to science fiction and fantasy author. The audiobook is read by Nnedi Okorafor and is only 2 hours long.

CBee I love Nnedi! I had no idea she‘d been through this 🙁 4y

Yesterday I finished #nonfiction2019 just under the wire. I cannot wait for #nonfiction2020. This is the only challenge I attempted this year and the only one I‘m doing next year. Thanks to @Riveted_Reader_Melissa for organizing again!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa You‘re welcome! Great year, congratulations and happy 2020! 5y

I did this as an audiobook. It was pretty quick, a talk she has given before. Powerful and meaningful.

Nnedi Okorafor was paralyzed as a young woman by a back surgery. The promised cure for her severe scoliosis led to paralysis and numbness. She eventually regained movement but not all sensation. The experience was transformative; all her future plans (and self identity) were shattered. What grew out of the ashes was a new determination and unbounded creativity. Okorafor says being broken opened new portals for her to explore this mysterious life.

Had a rough pain week, but I‘m celebrating that I let my body rest when I needed to, and got some fun things in there (like a wing night with friends) while I was at it.

✅ 10k step goal met on days when I could
✅ 4 books instead of just 1 - finished Leadership: In Turbulent Times and The Pun Also Rises, and read the tagged book and Suffragette Scandal start to finish.

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 I love the way you viewed your week! That‘s the power of #positivity. 🎉 You are celebrating what you did do and that‘s awesome! But I am sorry you faced some pain days this week. I hope this week is pain-free. 💚 5y
Charityann Nice job!👍🏼 5y
