A Boy's Own Story
A Boy's Own Story: A Novel | Edmund White
A groundbreaking novel about coming out from one of Americas preeminent gay writers Critically lauded upon its initial publication in 1982 for its pioneering depiction of homosexuality, A Boys Own Story is a moving tale about coming-of-age in midcentury America. With searing clarity and unabashed wit, Edmund Whites unnamed protagonist yearns for what he knows to be shameful. He navigates an uneasy relationship with his father, confounds first loves, and faces disdain from his peers at school. In the embrace of another, he discovers the sincere and clumsy pleasures of adolescent sexuality. But for boys in the 1950s, these desires were unthinkable. Looking back on his experiences, the narrator notes, I see now that what I wanted was to be loved by men and to love them back but not to be a homosexual. This trailblazing autobiographical story of one boys youth is a moving, tender, and heartbreaking portrait of what it means to grow up.

In honor of LGBTQIA Pride month, and for the #1001Books Goodreads group Diversity challenge. The autobiographical novel is different from anything else I have read, but most similar to John Irving I think. Brutally honest.

Blaire Ive had this on my shelf for years!! I need to get to it. 7y

This groundbreaking novel about a gay teenage boy coming of age in the 1950s is full of nostalgia and the yearning to be comfortable with oneself. The writing is elegant and the story is an important one to tell, though I found certain sections to be far more affecting and compelling than others. This was an uneven read for me, though I'm glad I read it.

Enjoying a quiet, autumnal Sunday with good coffee and a good book. Doesn't get better than that!

Dedicating my first Litsy post to tonight's book club at City Lit Books! I'm hosting the inaugural meeting of the Wilde Readers - a reading group focusing on LGBTQ lit, classic and contemporary. We are starting with Edmund White's "A Boy's Own Story"

I think this is one of those books that was perhaps too well written. I found myself often not paying attention and having to re-read paragraphs because I started thinking about something else. I'm sure school and work getting in the way doesn't help! I'm still interested in where this series is going to go so not all hope is lost in this series! I said similar things about The Raven Boys and wound up loving the series more than life itself.
