Who are you? What is your identity? What is racism? How do you choose your own path? How do you stand in solidarity? How can you hold yourself accountable? Learn about identities, true histories, and anti-racism work in 20 carefully laid out chapters. Written by anti-bias, anti-racist, educator and activist, Tiffany Jewell, and illustrated by French illustrator Aurlia Durand in kaleidoscopic vibrancy. This book is written for the young person who doesn't know how to speak up to the racist adults in their life. For the 14 year old who sees injustice at school and isn't able to understand the role racism plays in separating them from their friends. For the kid who spends years trying to fit into the dominant culture and loses themselves for a little while. It's for all of the Black and Brown children who have been harmed (physically and emotionally) because no one stood up for them or they couldn't stand up for themselves; because the colour of their skin, the texture of their hair, their names made white folx feel scared and threatened. It is written so children and young adults will feel empowered to stand up to the adults who continue to close doors in their faces. This book will give them the language and ability to understand racism and a drive to undo it. In short, it is for everyone.

1. I‘m grateful for Ibram X. Kendi and his powerful books. He‘s one of the major targets of anti-CRT rhetoric, but he just keeps doing his thing.👏🏽👏🏽
2. Not at the moment, but I have in the past
3. Worked through this one with Maya in 2020 ans we both learned and grew from it.

Though this is geared to children and young people, I think it‘s a great read for adults. And it should probably be required reading in schools! It explains racism and prejudice really well, and also how to do better.

It's targeted at middle-schoolers. Pro: glossary of terms, writing suggestions, and language to use when calling someone out or in.

This is the book our committee chose (after much deliberation) to begin our work with teachers in the district (K-12). The hope is that it will be less threatening for some than other books we have read.

Scochrane26 My pastor bought this for her teen. Not sure if she‘s read it yet. 4y

This book should be required reading. I learned so much while reading this book. I loved that after each chapter it had an activity to do to reenforce what was learned doing the chapter. It also showed you ways to put what you learned into action.

I have been looking for a book to use for my new social justice and activism unit. Though this book may be geared towards students younger than my seniors, but I think it does a great job explaining terms and helping students begin to understand their relationship with race. I think it also also for students to use this book to stem from to other forms of discrimination.

I know I have said this before regarding other books, but I will say it again, This 👏🏻books👏🏻 needs 👏🏻to be👏🏻required reading. Even if you aren‘t in the education field, you need to. It‘s powerful, and it simply and concisely states what racism is and how to combat it. I read it over ebook on Sora and highlighted so many good phrases and paragraphs.

If you are a teacher...read this.

If you have upper elementary, middle school, or high school kids...read this w/ your kids.

Scratch that, everyone should read it! It‘s an easily accessible place to start for those on the journey to learn to unpack their privilege, understand intersectionality and identity, and identify how to move forward on the lifelong journey of being anti-racist. Anywhere you are on that path, you can learn from this book.

I really liked this (as evidenced by the many 🦜 tabs!). So effectively written for a young audience, and the bright colors and inclusive art featured on the cover are present on every page. I love how it defines and explains racism and related concepts in such succinct and memorable ways, and I also love how it makes room for joy in antiracism work.

Seekingtardis I love your flock of tabs!!! 😍😍 4y

I‘m working on selecting a summer read aloud. This won‘t be it. But it has wonderful ideas for community discussions in the coming year.

A good book to dive into with older children to help take action toward an anti-racist world we all so desperately need! I loved the activities and thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter. The content was presented in a simple and concrete way. I‘m glad I‘ll have this on hand as my kids get older to continue the conversation in a meaningful and action-based way.

This is the book Maya and I are reading together in June for our summer #motherdaughterbookclub. We‘re doing a #chapteraday since each chapter has a corresponding activity.

Chapter 1 explored the meaning of “dominant culture” and asked Who Am I?

Maya also learned some new terms I hadn‘t realized she didn‘t know, including cisgender, neurodiverse, and neurotypical.

This is a great book for middle and high schoolers!

swishandflick 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 5y
alisiakae @swishandflick I don‘t need applause for doing what I should have already done. One thing I‘ve realized in all of this is while I have personally been a social justice activist for years, the heavy conversations have dropped off with maya once she hit adolescence. We talked about these things a lot when she was younger, but I wasn‘t doing the heavy lifting that comes along with parenting an angsty teen and still having these talks. ⬇️⬇️ 5y
alisiakae She‘s in a very diverse magnet middle school, and I realized I have been letting that be enough lately. It‘s not, and that was me becoming complacent. 5y

alisiakae @swishandflick I hope that didn‘t sound abrupt, I have a tendency for that. 🤣 5y
swishandflick Not too abrupt at all, I realize I probably should have provided context with the Emojis so apologies for that. I just love that (1) you have a mother daughter bookclub in general, but that (2) you are reading something so relevant together. And then I also just love that this book even exists for a younger audience (I'm not a parent and don't always realize what's out there). 5y
alisiakae @swishandflick When I picked this book up at the library, I didn‘t realize it was geared to both kids and adults, and I love that it is too! I first heard about it from one of my daughter‘s former teachers who book a few copies for other teachers at her school. 5y
JaclynW @4thhouseontheleft This book was a Kindle deal this week. I'm looking forward to digging into it. It looks like a great book that hits a lot of areas. I didn't realize it had action items at the end of each chapter. That's a bonus! I have a 17, 14 and 8 year old. My oldest 2 have been reading books like this for years but I'm realizing that I need to do more with my youngest. We do not live in a very diverse area so I have to purposefully educate 5y
