The Volcano Lover: A Romance | Susan Sontag
5 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
Set in 18th century Naples, based on the lives of Sir William Hamilton, his celebrated wife Emma, and Lord Nelson, and peopled with many of the great figures of the day, this unconventional, bestselling historical romance from the National Book Award-winning author of In America touches on themes of sex and revolution, the fate of nature, art and the collector's obsessions, and, above all, love.

Unable to sleep so I picked this off the bookshelf. Susan Sontag is elusive to me - she was my Achilles heel in collage so I always shied away from her work as an adult. It feels good to discover her in new ways.

Susan Sontag is a good writer but this book wasn't interesting enough to satisfy me

I bought this used YEARS ago, picked it up a few times and couldn't get past the first page, picked it up again a couple of weeks ago and am really enjoying it. 🤔I've always loved her essays, so I'm glad to finally be getting into the fiction side of things too.

The Volcano Lover is still one of my favourite by Susan Sontag. Such a breathtakingly beautiful story. I want to savour every word, every sentence. Every line makes me feel like I am falling in love. "If only I could remain here, under your benevolent influence, I should be quite healed."
