Either/Or: A Fragment of Life | Soren Kierkegaard

Pickpick

After a few months, I've finally finished Either/Or. What an interesting novel. I love the exploration of ethics and aesthetics, and to do it in a novel meant that Kierkegaard was able to explore all his ideas without settling on one choice. #translatedfiction #philosophy

I'm still trying to put my thoughts together on this one. This would be a very difficult book to write. It's centred around a standup comedian who has a break down on stage. Humour is so subjective and to focus an entire work on stage would have been difficult. I think this would make a great stage production

This stunning book got me to think about refugees in a whole different way. I like that Hamid challenged stereotypes from start to finish. Stereotypes of Refugees, Muslims, religion, gender and sexuality. I will be picking up his other books very soon.

A terrifying yet fascinating insight into life in the Gulag under Stalin. But I find myself needing to know more, so will have to pick up the seven volume collection of The Gulag Archipelago

vivastory Also recommend Nadezhda Mandelstam's memoir "Hope Against Hope." It's about the arrest & sentencing of her husband, the great poet Osip Mandelstam. 8y
BooksForYears I'll recommend Journey Into the Whirlwind by Eugenia Ginsburg - firsthand female experience in Stalin-era prisons and gulag. 8y

Book 1 of 2017: The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares and translated by Ruth L.C. Simms. This stunning Argentinian novella offers a mystery, some suspense and a touch of the bizarre. What a joy to read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #translatedfiction

Reading this in India was perfect. I didn't know what to expect here - I had a fair idea but I got so much more. What stuck out with me was the personal struggle reflected in this one.

vivastory I've been meaning to reread "Siddhartha." I don't remember much about it as it was 19 years ago. I'm also wanting to read "Steppenwolf." I love the cover of "Siddhartha." 8y

I reread this book because I love Anne Fadiman's writing style. I love the way she writes about books and it inspires me to write in a similar way. This will be by inspiration and my text book for awhile

vivastory @Knowledgelost I picked up a book similar to Fadiman's that you'd be interested in. Peter Orner's "Am I Alone Here: Notes on Reading to Live & Living to Read." I haven't read it yet, but just randomly flipping it open I came across this gem, "stories fail if you read them only once. You've got to meet a story again and again, in different moods, in different eras of your life." 8y
Knowledgelost @vivastory I love essays on reading and books. I've read a fair few books about books and some are great like Ex Libris and some are disappointing. Will have to try this suggestion 8y

While I have some problems with this novel, I can't stop thinking about it. This will be a book that will take a life time to read

Sydsavvy I think I liked it best this time around. I finally saw the symbolism. In my youth I was wrapped up in the love story. 8y
Knowledgelost @Sydsavvy it's a horrible love story 8y
Sydsavvy Lol!!!! Well I guess that depends on the perspective. You know, I had this before my daughter had John Green. Ah, the power of the tragedy of the fault in our stars. And then as an adult, you realize the love story isn't about the actual humans at all. Go figure. 8y
