When Calls the Heart (Canadian West Book #1)
When Calls the Heart (Canadian West Book #1) | Janette Oke
Nothing in her cultured East Coast upbringing prepared Elizabeth for a teaching position on the Canadian frontier. Yet, despite the constant hardships, she loves the children in her care. Determined to do the best job she can and fighting to survive the harsh land, Elizabeth is surprised to find her heart softening towards a certain member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Book 1 of the bestselling Canadian West series.

5✨ I laughed, cried, and loved this book. We follow Elizabeth, a cultured East Canada teacher, when gets a position in the frontier to teach a small town that has never had a teacher. Her struggle to hard living is a major learning experience to her. She tries to hold her head high, but what she doesn‘t struggle with is loving and teaching her students. As a teacher struggling myself this was the book I needed. #FoodandLit 🇨🇦

Good book, very different from the tv show, almost unrecognizable. It ended a little abruptly, but it was a very easy read with an enjoyable plot.

Taking a break from reading tonight to bing this! 😍 I discovered the new episodes while searching for The Princess Bride movie. (My daughter asked me what The Princess Bride was!! 😱 #ParentingFail ) I totally plan on rectifying this grievance!

GingerAntics If you can find someone who streams The Princess Bride, let me know. I couldn‘t find it on anything I had (Netflix, Hulu, STARZ, Tubi). I added it to my wish list on VUDU. 6y
Literary_Siren @GingerAntics I looked through all the same services and couldn‘t find it. I‘m going to buy it on iTunes tomorrow. It‘s only $9.99. 6y
GingerAntics Oh it‘s cheaper on iTunes. I didn‘t think to look there. Thanks for that. 6y

Melissa_J That show is a hit in this house, too. My daughter has been binge watching season five the last few days. 6y
Literary_Siren @GingerAntics You‘re very welcome! 6y
Shaneyney Where can you watch this? I love janette oak 6y
Literary_Siren @Shaneyney Netflix has season 1-5! (edited) 6y
Shaneyney Is it similar to the “love comes softly “ seriess? 6y
Literary_Siren @Shaneyney I have no idea. I‘ve never read any of her books and I usually don‘t watch shows like this but I got hooked on the first episode of the first season and now I can‘t get enough! 6y
Sweetkokoro I have The Princess Bride on dvd and my daughter has watched it plenty of times with me (I made sure she knew what it was) and she finds me crazy for knowing majority of it word for word. And she still doesn‘t seem to understand my love for this movie haha. Hopefully your little one will enjoy it! 6y

Hmmm. Somewhere between so-so and pan. Some parts were entertaining while other parts dragged or felt unnecessary. There seemed to be a serious lack of courtship or getting to know you stage so the ending had me a little 🤔

I know this is stupid, but the author has spent an extraordinary amount of time in writing about Beth's trouble with mice. If I have to read about the agonizing death of one more mouse I'm going to DNF this book. It has nothing to do with the plot. Not a fan of animal cruelty especially when it seems superfluous. 😠

AlaMich Not stupid at all! A) cruelty to animals is very upsetting to read and B) repetition in a book of trivial things like mice is one of my pet peeves (edited) 8y
Sace @AlaMich I'm so glad you understand. I'm about 20 pages away from finished and I still see no point to all of it. 8y

I know Jack and Elizabeth are the main couple but these two are my favorite in the TV show. They are sweet, funny, and just such interesting characters 😆😉😍😍

Sace I read this books decades ago. I had no idea that they had made it into a TV show. 8y
robinb I ❤ this show too, and these two are wonderful! She's a real character! 😂 8y

JoRead @Sace I haven't read the books but from what I've heard it's only loosely based on the books, still it's a heartwarming and feel good kind of show ☺ 8y
JoRead @robinb She is! She's even more interesting than Elizabeth haha 8y
JoRead @KarynGood Me too. I finished watching the series on Netflix todsy and I really hope they get renewed for at least another season. 8y

Does anyone else watch When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark channel? I loved this book while growing up. It was one of my favorites and I love the show! The last season just came to Netflix and I can't wait to watch it.

intothehallofbooks Oh, I've been wanting to watch! But I'm annoyingly weird about reading first and I haven't taken the time to read this yet. I LOVE Janette Oke. So I just know I'll love this. I just need to go ahead and do it. 😊 8y
ReadingSusan @intothehallofbooks yes I am the same way. I always read the book first. I will say that the show only very loosely follows the book for the first few episodes. 8y
Susanita I stumbled onto the show a while ago only to discover it was the season finale! 8y

CrowCAH I've started the Love Comes Softly series. But this one too looks really good! 8y
megt Love this show! I've never read the books, but I feel like I'm so deep into the show now that I might hold off on them. 8y
JoRead It did?! I love the show and didn't even know it was based on a book. Thanks fir the heads up 😆 8y
ReadingSusan @Susanita oh no! You definitely should watch from beginning. It's such a sweet show. 8y
ReadingSusan @CrowCAH yes! I love this first book in the Canadian West series more than the Love Comes Softly series. The rest of the books aren't as good as the first but this first one is my favorite of all of Jeanette Oke's books. 8y
ReadingSusan @megt really the show and the books are not that similar. They kept Elizabeth's name and the male lead is a Mountie and maybe two plot points and that's it. 8y
ReadingSusan @JoRead it's very loosely based. Like in the book there is no big town. It's more primitive. 8y
CrowCAH @ReadingSusan it sounds like I should switch series! 😊 8y
ReadingSusan @CrowCAH I definitely like both series. The Love Comes Softly later books are my favorite. Love Finds A Home is my favorite one. 8y

After the election, I needed some feel-good brain candy. Netflix recommended this Hallmark show about a school teacher from a rich family who loves to a small coal-mining town and falls in love with a Mountie. The first season was entertaining (albeit the least diverse TV show I have EVER seen in my life) so I gave the book a chance. It was okay but not my thing. I'd give it probably 3 stars. If you like Christian romance, give it a try.

charminggoats I'd also like to say that the show and the book are only slightly alike. The heroine's name is the same and their occupations are the same, but that's about it. 8y

I love this book. I read it for the first time when I was twelve or thirteen and have read it many times since then as you can tell from the tattered cover. I love the story of Elizabeth going forward to teach in the wilderness. The romance isn't my absolute favorite now that I am older but the nostalgia factor on this book is really high.

BraveNewBooks Me too! Janette Oke and Gilbert Morris were definitely formative parts of my adolescence. 8y
MrBook Nice pic! 8y
ReadingSusan @BraveNewBooks omg yes! I loved all of Janette Oke's books. I was pen pals with Gilbert Morris. I wrote him a letter about the Winslow books because he wrote about my ancestor in there and he responded. We sent letters back and forth for 4 or 5 years. He was so nice. 8y
tpixie @ReadingSusan that's a great story! 8y

This was my first ever Jannette Oke book. I was in early high school, being homeschooled by deeply Christian parents. This was the closest I was allowed to get to "romance", but it was the adventure and courage of the characters that drew me in, I didn't see the "romance" until years later.
